Oh my God. I'm horrible at tests, I stress and then I'm ridiculed by my classmates for my lower marks on them, when they get in the 80's and 90's, and even get 100. I just hate school tests in general, because they just make me feel stupid, and not as smart as I should be. I've been told I should rethink what I want to do after high school by my teachers and my parents. You're not supposed to cry in your bedroom over your textbook because you don't understand the material or get a low mark. This though, this makes me feel so much better. I'm not the only one who's thought about it, and I'm not the only one who wants to do better but questions the education system and their way of promoting difference and uniqueness, and then goes about using the same techniques on these different and unique people. Thank you. Thank you for making me feel better about myself and my grades. Thank you for making me feel better, because yesterday my friend laughed at my struggling in math, and told me I should be prepared to fail the upcoming test. This inspired me to ask my chem teacher today why we learn chemistry, and he answered by explaining to me that it's not about the actualy subject matter, it's about training your brain to work hard. He then explained that it's essentially the same idea for all courses, for example, in french you work a part of your brain that otherwise would be less developed, and so, while it seems pointless at face value, the fact of the matter is school's purpose is two things (as far as I can tell), firstly, to test how hard and well students work, in different subjects, and develop and train your brain like a muscle. Teachers realize that students wont be using chemistry or spainish later in life, but the point is to see how well you work in different areas, and secondly to train yourself to think quickly and well. The purpose of school is to prepare you for the real world, and actually, to teach you how to "survivie" by using your brain.

This is so true ! I dont have good grades in math and science and people call me dumb for it but ill ask them “ do you know how to survive in a extreme situation? Or do you know what to do if you get lost in the midle of nowhere?” They never answer back because they dont know the answer and also do they know how to save someones life? No they dont and they call themselves smart. Schools should teach what to do in life and death situations. Not just that but actuall things that you are going to use in life

Brilliant video! A lot of people are shocked when they ask me where I got my degree, and I tell them I never went to university. I couldn't afford to at the time as my folks didn't have a pot to pee in and I was sick of having no money. A few dead end jobs and a serious illness later and I found myself in a job I loved, which I did for the next 25 years, managing a support service for my local authority. I remember a drama teacher's report stating ''Insensitive to the needs of others. Lacks ideas''. I was so hurt, but I proved the lie for what it was and I continue to do so into my 'old age' (I'm 50 next year) . Power to you - Keep proving the lies for what they are, I look forward to seeing more of your work :)

At the age of 64 I totally get this young persons message. I just wish in my lifetime that bureaucrats and policy makers would listen to our youth. They have so much to offer. I wish to address the message in this video and not the video itself, which is superb. This is great in theory, but look at places like Finland, Japan, and South Korea, where education is so highly regarded. They learn the same things the Western world does, but at a faster rate and a higher capacity. As a result, the majority of individuals have a greater capacity for learning and are more well-rounded. Sure, I've never used the Pythagorean theorem, my test scores were never a deciding factor in getting a job, and I rarely use my degree for its intended purpose; but there's something to be said for being a well-rounded, intellectual. I agree with this message 100% if it is referring solely to education under the college level. The education system for many countries, particular the United States, is in great need of repair; but that does not mean we should throw out general learning all together. The consensus seems to be that at some point, high school should become more about college preparation and not about fact-learning, leaving college to be solely focused careers. But what about high school students who do not know what they want to do with their lives? Then we have a situation where the education system is forcing a 16-year-old to decide their life path before they have experienced life in general. Given that the majority of college students change their major at least once in their college careers (I changed mine three times), it is safe to assume that high schools do not have it all figured out. You may not use the Pythagorean theorem in your career, but there are hundreds of careers that require that kind of knowledge.

This is actually way to real, i mean look at our society its based upon "Good grades" I am myself a student and i can promise that alot of kids can relate to the fact that you after every "test" forget half of what you learned! And how important is it to know what Hitlers grandmas middle name was? And how important is it to know the volume of a blueberry? When whats most important to know is how to get a job and how to survive in this life that we are living! Peace out!

This is so thought provoking and truthful. As a teacher I have battled with this and contiue to with the state exams and now using test results as reflective of the teacher's ability to show improvement and effects pay checks. Not only are the students being effected and are losing their persona to data (that does not and cannot refelct what they truly know), we are losing the personas of teachers as well. They no longer are encouraged to teach though provoking ideas, but strategies to pass a test, "If you don't know the answer, it is a safe beat to choose 'c'." Where is education heading. I pray that there are people out there that are brave enough to take the time to get to know how special each student is. That's my dream.

Hey Saar. Great video. Many people/teacher/parent failed to tell why math is important because they never understud it! Math is maybe one of the most important lesson you are going to learn in life. In math you don't learn lines and memories text. In math you are developing way of thinking. The way your brain looks at other things. The way You see things and ability to look things in many dimensions can be applied and is applied in places you don't even see. Developes a logic way of thinking.

Although many doors closed bc I don't have a degree, hard work and excelling at each stage of my career allowed me to prove myself, building a resume that spoke volumes more than any piece of paper ever could. And more important than any salary or title I've achieved is the fact that I'm known to be a person of character, someone who is dependable and reliable, not just by employers but also by creditors. No class or curriculum can ever compare to a person who is known for their solid character.

I never realized the true beauty of the Pythagorean theorem until after high school when I needed to square a corner for a soccer field I was lining. I've used it on many occasions since then. More people would appreciate it if schools would teach how to apply it in the everyday world. Knowledge is power.

How could people dislike this video?

As the Neil deGrasse Tyson once said; Even if you'll never use some of the things in you learned in school, the act of learning those subjects created a wiring in your brain that you didn't have before. The only problem that I have with this is that only a small handful of subjects that you'll study in school will require you to use critical thinking and analysis skills. The rest is just memorization and regurgitation.

What a unique visual way to get across many great points. Remember. The Education Model is HUGE and has many people employed to keep the beast alive. It takes 5 miles to turn around the USS Nimitz. Even though technology has dramatically changed how students learn, the bureaucratic BEAST of education is larger than the Nimitz and will NOT respond the way it needs to in order to continue to engage and 'measure' (since that seems to be a way they can retain their paychecks) how much students learn. I am an educator. I KNOW.

Exams, as you state, are a crude filter.Whilst sifting for iron in the student morass, it's tailings can leave diamonds in the rough. Not all the tailings are diamonds, and such diamonds have still to shine whilst tailings can become the mortar of mighty edifices.

This video is amazing and so true! I work hard to try achieve my best in tests, remembering every date in history, every equation solution in mathematics, every environmental issue in geography, every language technique in English and everything relating to biology, chemistry and physics in science, yet sometimes it really isn't good enough. Yes overall my study will USUALLY pay off, but sometimes it just doesn't. But I also know that there are people who study and just can never do well in tests, even though they know everything in the test. Because everyone is different, yet we are all tested the same way. It is really true that we should not be judged by our exam marks because there is so much more to a student's ability then their arbitrary number they scored in a test. The issue is there is no other way of testing students in that aspect of things. Society judges us for how we go about school. We are told by our parents, teachers and older siblings that 'if we study hard we will do well in school'. Yet what they do not remember is that there was a time when no matter how hard they tried, there were tests they did not do well in. We as a society are told to do well in school, work hard, get a job and then start a family. But a job is simply this: Just Over Broke. We work hard at school, stressing every time we have tests, being told that these tests will ultimately decide our future, to then move on to the real world where no-one cares whether you scored 90% in your English exam, whether you can do something well or not. In the real world people don't care whether we are weak, self conscious or sad. We are expected to do the job society tells us to do without complaint. I feel it's wrong to live in a society like this. My parents always say "enjoy high school, when you get into the real world you will miss high school. Yet how can we enjoy high school when all we can ever do is study and study and study in hopes we will do well in a test and receive that high number we are hoping for that is meant to decide the rest of our fate. We should be able to make our own fate! Yes I do agree you need certain qualifications and skills in life. But a number deciding our fate isn't right. We live in a society that is hypercritical. We are told that we are all individuals, then tested and judged if we are not up to par with our peers. We are told education is important, only to hear fees rise every year. We are told to always try our best, then told that our best wasn't good enough. There has to be a better way, a more logical way. A way that supports the ideals that we are taught and meant to accept as children. I may not be the one to deliver another way, but there has to be another way. Exams shouldn't be the say so as to what we can and can't accomplish. We are the only ones who should be able to decide the fate of our own lives. Not some teacher, not some number, not some subject. We create our own paths in life. We should not be tied down to an 'A' 'B' 'C' or 'D'. We should be tied down to our own abilities, our own dreams, and our own wants! Teachers these days seem to teach us how to pass in tests, not learn and succeed in life. We are judged by not what we are good at, but what we are bad at. I'm only 15 so perhaps people may think I'm still to young to understand this. Please not I'm not using this as an excuse to not study or not learn. I'm simply stating that school should be more than trying to pass those tests, or being told we aren't good enough in math, even though we want to be an artist. It should be about setting us up to follow our dreams, it should be about being judged on more than a test result, or what we did bad in. That is how I hope school becomes one day.

the other thing is, someone could know every last detail of a subject and still not be good enough because they're a bad test taker, maybe they falter under pressure, which could be detrimental to a job, but overcoming pressure comes with experience, you bypass and overcome their faults and failures overtime; I used to panic when the time for a test to end was coming up, and that would cloud my mind and slow me down, now, I pump my leg, it's primal, just an instinct, but it pumps my blood, helps me focus, it puts the energy from the panic somewheres else and lets me remain focused, it's second nature now, but I learned it though experience that younger me didn't have yet, and that sucks, teachers teach to the test and then reteach in the beginning of the next year because we don't remember because we regurgitate everything we learned onto the test and out of our heads, then we rinse and repeat until we're thrown out to fend for ourselves, I don't know what comes after high school. my freshman year just ended, I just know that I don't feel that school has taught me anything both new and useful since elementary school.

I am part if this generation, and to be completely honest, this is what it's like. I always try my hardest but I let those letters mess with my head and immediately think "Must try harder next time" but in the back of my head, I always think "Those letters determine whether I get into university, and determine how much I will have when I'm older". This is not the way it should be and that guy has a very good point.

I connect with you on this on many ways. I'm sick of the educational system because it's corrupted since it doesn't provide a job for us. A degree has become just a paper for you to look back at instead of a ticket for a job that would supply your entire life and family. I'm sick of people exhausting about how important school is but once you're in it, it's not gonna decide what job you get, what is available for you in life, or how successful you're gonna be. There's nothing that English class or math class or any general education course can do for you. It's all a waste for nothing and there's nothing we can do about it but complain. The school has become an educational government without any care for the future of humanity. It only informs students with information but it doesn't give them any life evaluation. Let's go for our dreams and become creative. Let no school ruin your own education. 💪

Utmost respect for the narrator and the design artist for capturing and illustrating the deep views perfectly!

"We all have different abilities, thought processes, experiences and genes, so why is a class full of individuals tested by the same means" "...they never prepared us for the biggest test, which is survival" Nature's tests for survival don't get adjusted for individual needs, so this is asking for contradictory things. This was the best thing that I've seen all week. The education system is fucked. I mean I know that I'm not a dumb person but just because I'm not good as grasping concepts in maths and remembering them, I get lower grades and then I feel really dumb. It's really messing lots of people up and lowering their self esteem. I'm going to show heaps of people this video. It deserves to be one of the most viral videos. Seriously.

Speaking as someone who hated math in HS and who is very distractable -- I get it, math seems boring and seemingly irrelevant but students should be required to learn these things even when they are too young to appreciate them. Math is important. It is the hidden language of the world, of nature. Not knowing basic algebra or the pythagorean theorem will prevent you from learning any advanced skills in any quantitative field if you choose to go in that direction. And, until you have been exposed to more advanced concepts, unfortunately it is very difficult to understand the powerful applications and all the possibilities. When you were in elementary school you learned addition, multiplication, division etc. By high school such skills are trivial. As you start to take more "advanced" math like Calculus I, II, and III, you realize that algebra will become trivial, too. And then you realize that Calculus I and II are, to some extent, baby stuff, albeit more useful than algebra. It's not easy and it's not always interesting but you NEED the boring, rote practice to advance your knowledge in ways you did not know could even exist. The problem with the school system is that they don't do much to inspire or motivate students and see the bigger picture -- to see math in context. To encourage students who are struggling even though, with some hard work and extra support, there should be nothing keeping them back. But there's nothing you can do about that now. So quit your whining and go study. If you can't figure out the pythagorean theorem then that means you should be studying it, not complaining about how useless it is when you don't even know what its uses are.

This is so empowering! I always get really good grades, but I have an inability, if you could call it, to do exams. As much as I study, I always flunk- it's inevitable, really. It's just because stress out. My teacher claims that I won't get a good career because they'll look at this and think I'm incompetent.

Saying so many words and never finding a meaning. Running in circles, with a noble goal and no path to complete it. Words are cheap - anyone can say "We need to teach children for the real world and not to the test", but then you ask them "How?" and it all comes crashing down. The politicians get an outcry from the parents, who are afraid because their children are failing. They give orders to the teachers, who know this is just going to make things worse, but have to do it anyway because this is what they wanted to do. Their results go to the parents, who cry out because they're afraid their children will fail. It's a cycle that feeds itself. People stand around and tell themselves that "young people aren't smart any more", just like their parents and their grandparents and so on all the way back to Plato in Athens. Some people go up on the hill and shout that it needs to change, getting proud of themselves and puffing out their chests, but when you ask them how they'd change it they run back down the hill. If they do have an answer it ignores that we live in a world of limited resources and vulnerable minds. Anyone can stand up and scream "I want to change this", but not everyone can change the world. Don't tell me something is wrong when I can see it for myself. Tell me what needs to be done.

Too many kids are going to use this as an excuse not to study for tests or to not try at school because they're "Not going to use pythagoras theorem or pathetic fallacy". The message is right but at the end of the day, kids are going to dillute its meaning til it becomes nothing but an excuse not to work hard :/

Completely disagree with this, firstly the school systems today are mostly based on critical thinking skills fathering then memorising. Furthermore things like Pythagoras Theorem, although might not be of use for some, it is the skills of deduction earned from this that will actually help everyone in whatever job they follow. Also, in order to live in a civilised society with certain values, all people must know some basic knowledge on various subjects such as history languages and math. I am currently a senior in school, yet still I would find it unacceptable for one to not know same basic facts about the world wars the world has gone through. It is the absence of certain knowledge and certain skills that would lead to people being very easily drawn into propaganda and lead to corrupt politicians leading countries, whereas with a correct educational system this could be stopped. Also exams do not tell anyone what they are actually worth. If a student wishes to study art during his tertiary education (university) he does not need to have high scores in certain courses, and likewise an aspiring engineer does not need high scores in history. I don't really get the random facts about the wrongs of society. Countries these days have many faults but still promote laws that help societies function properly, should these laws stop as well? Finally for certain subjects, exam results should decide if one is or is not allowed to follow a certain career. One who wants to become an engineer but is getting D's in physics class should not be allowed to actually become an engineer as logically mistakes he makes, might lead to thousands of deaths.

Has anyone else noticed that the “best” students are simply the ones who are the best at being confused until they understand the lesson? Learning is all about resolving confusion and we each have varying tolerance levels with respect to not understanding something. The most sensitive among us struggle more and take a little longer because emotions hinder clarity-hence they appear “slow” or less intelligent.

Getting a degree is easy. You just have to work hard. You dont get grades if you dont work hard. I dont get it? Youre just lazy, not stupid, lazy. You have to work hard.

As an educator, I found this video interesting, but also noted that it contained glaringly poor condemnations of things you clearly do not understand. You don't know what exams are for, and you do not understand how they fit into the larger scheme of education. You also do not understand the purpose or value of a liberal public education, apparently. Here's a hint: The reason why you learn so many things in school that you "don't ever use again" is because the future is uncertain, and undetermined, and your teachers have to treat you like you are very important, and like your future is as-yet-undetermined, and must provide you with the broadest panoply of experiences, so that Future You can decide your own fate, and not be held back by what we didn't tell you, or by the fact that you don't know something because it is what you were never exposed to, and so your future was determined by what we didn't say. So, there will be things you will be good at, and things you won't be, and you will figure that out through education. And, some of the things you learn aren't just about the "facts and figures" themselves, but rather is about HOW YOU LEARNED THEM, and your ability to take that knowledge acquisition process and apply it elsewhere will determine your success in future fields of study -- especially those fields that require more education, so you can reach the heights of learning, and even those who are the smartest students can fulfill their highest-possible aspirations. And, FYI, school reflects and shapes society, but it isn't DETERMINED by it in the way that would make those people you call "society" who are so immoral the people behind exams -- you went far astray in that part of the video. Anyway, thanks for posting. I hope when you are older, and hopefully well-educated, you can look back on this video and see it for what it really is.

This video completely ignores the importance of work ethic. Having the strength to overcome obstacles even if they seem pointless or uninteresting. Having a mind that finds one-off solutions for problems that you may never need to use again. These are valuable skills to have considering life has a habit of throwing hurdles at us. I also find it odd that he complains that we have to learn the Pythagorean Theorem. Maths trains the brain to see connections and builds the neural pathways that make the brain stronger for all kinds of other things. I agree that the education system is flawed, but this video is off the mark in at least a few areas.

This is amazing.. I believe you tell exactly how things're going on in many countries. There's only one more point I'd like to remind all of you my friends. We know schools suck, but don't be pulled back by the hatred. People do things badly when they hate them. But there's a saying: if you can't change something, get used to it. I mean here, just have fun with your friends, enjoy all the moments while you're young, but find the happiness in learning, inspire yourself and get the highest qualification after all. Showed this to my mum so she could maybe get an idea into what it's like to be a year 12 student. She watched 20 seconds and called the whole idea rubbish and 'crap' who some 'stupid 17 year old boy made up'. Im so sick of my mum not believing in me and my dreams all because she could never have hers. I thought this video was amazing and helped give me more courage to keep studying hard for the end of year exams!

The typography is wonderful, but this is a horrible message.

I've done this type of work before(mainly music videos) and I don't know that I've ever been able to take something that powerful and then make it hit harder. Well done.
