Hi! New here! 👋🏼You are so self-aware! I love how you are able to recognize what your family will/will not use. Regarding handwriting: My mom homeschooled all of my siblings and used a variety of approaches to handwriting--from formal textbooks to almost nothing. We all ended up able to write. 😉

Hello! 👋 I’m glad you mentioned different approaches being helpful too!

I agree about TGATB. I did like it, but my daughter was able to move way faster for reading, more on “grade level” for handwriting, spelling just felt like there wasn’t much instruction. My daughter was distracted by all the different topics, that left her asking way more questions, straying away from completing the lesson. I switched to all about reading and we love it, because she can move much faster and she is learning more of the phonics rules, I also switched to Saxon math which does have a lot of review, but I like how it’s black and white, hands on with manipulatives and we don’t get distracted in the random stories. Love how we get to choose and make changes!

A lot of your experience was the same for my oldest and me. I wanted to really like the all in one approach because the idea of having everything right there just sounded awesome, especially for teaching multiple kids! I’ve heard so many good things about Saxon and even considered using it. We don’t mind the black and white boring looking curriculum over here! Lol if it works, it works.

Printable "moving pieces" are not a good fit for me, either--I use and LOVE a curriculum that includes storyboards with a bunch of small pieces to cut out and use to re-tell stories...We DO retell and act out the stories we're learning, but we just do it by acting as the characters ourselves with random household items as props, versus me having to print and cut and laminate and store all those little printable pieces. Works for me!

I love that you switch it up like that, making it more fitting instead of trying to force it as prescribed!

We love TGTB language arts but we don’t do spelling with it!!! We’ve found with my youngest handwriting curriculum hasn’t helped her but my older kids learnt to write at public school so we haven’t done handwriting for them with public school!!! We love bible verse copywork!!! I probably will use a cursive curriculum for my youngest when she’s ready but my older kids learnt cursive at public school!!! With math my kids ask their uncle and he teaches them!!! We love certain science packs but if it’s cheaper to buy the stuff individually!!! I just buy art and craft supplies and no packs!!! My kids are able to create themselves!!!

I like doing Bible verse copywork too! Though not always, I try to have my oldest copy our current memory verse. That’s great that your kids have someone else to ask about math stuff! I love that with homeschooling, the making of our “village” gets highlighted. ❤️
