@@carhoarder602 ditto, temp gauge in my 3400 impala still shuts off after I've changed the sensor and harness twice, it's protect mode... The computer shuts off the temp sensor which shuts off the a.c. and turns the coolant fans on full blast! I've changed every part I can think of trying to figure this out and after 4 years haven't come anywhere close, however just like this grand prix when the temp gauge works (temporarily after reconnecting the battery) my transmission slips something god awful but as soon as the temp gauge shuts off it shifts normally so I know the trans is fine but still can't pull a code that helps! Forums didn't help at all either!

Transmission has always been the Achilles heel on those w-body cars. They aren't horrible to swap out but should be built if replacing. Manually shifting it helps as it jacks the line pressure up but that's just a bandaid too. Awesome cars when they are running good. I loved my 00 Grand Prix for the 6 years I had her.

I at one time had a 1993 Pontiac sunbird le 2dr sport coupe with manual windows 3spd automatic transmission Delco am/FM asskicker stereo lol and the external add on options auto reverse cassette tape player with seek, and it was glacier metallic blue well the gm version anyways glacier metallic blue is a dodge color my best friend had a 89 dodge power ram w250 12valve 5.9 Cummins 5spd getrag transmission and 4x4 that was glacier metallic blue beautiful truck and my sunbird was the same color,it had a non ac heater box type setup third brake light mounted under the center of the deck lid spoiler car was a 2.0 h.o. 4cyl and unfortunately cracked the head on my uncle first before I bought it and he fixed it but I started having coolant loss and white smoke out of the exhaust so sure enough where the bosses for the cam followers are the head cracked and this was not an easy head to find and I ended up selling it for scrap to a junkyard for the body and transmission until he noticed it had 124k miles interior smelled like antifreeze because the head, and the only head I could locate was up in Michigan for $1,250 for the bare casting no cam followers bolts, bearings caps nothing else, and the junkyard I sold it to is actually a recycling yard they put better matching 14 inch tires on it and pulled the le specific aluminum sport coupe wheels off they were 13's and got ahold of a cavalier head and a used Beretta gt head they already had that needed machine work used the best of the two, pulled the new bolts, cam, cam followers and caps off the motor and put it back together and ended up selling it to family to them car went to around Dayton Ohio but glacier metallic blue 93 Pontiac sunbird le bright red pinstripe 93 composite front headlights and the le specific tailights and the gold spoiler because of the original one got broke the car stuck out would be easy to spot and some sort of Oldsmobile fwd 14 inch aluminum polished wheels that would fit the sunbird lug bolt pattern was put on it, I would have kept the specific 93 sunbird le aluminum wheels they had newer tires but they were 185/65r13 still though was a great driving car while it ran right and if people don't understand the Delco asskicker stereo look up 88-90 Buick Regal limited fwd lol

When I pressed the gas pedal it was revving but not going anywhere, so I pulled it over and turned it off. Turned it back on and it was working fine after that. It burned oil a little bit, and I went 6 months without adding new oil to it and it starting knocking. (thanks 17 year old me). Also I had to replace the window motors 6 times. It has 4 windows.

If it has water in the oil & isn't hydro-locked...check the intake. The plastic intake tends to crack & suck coolant. I bought an Olds Regency with 97K miles for $300 and the intake, flush the motor & full service. $2500 sale. The "Fire danger?" Rear valve cover gasket can dry out & leak oil onto the exhaust manifold. When I come through Oklahoma with it, Randy, you may want to see my Regal GS I bought from GM. It was a PGA/Seafair Promo car- it looks pretty stock but has a lot of modifications/ "Non-assembly line" parts on it

Had a GT put a ZZP m-90 kit on it with headers, down pipe, intake, and I bought a tuner I ran mid 13’s on a 3.2 pulley. Trans lasted about 4 months. Sold the car. The stock trans are known to be weak

I had a Monte Carlo and I thought it was the power steering making the noise and come to find out it was the transmission pump going out and it would do the same thing

Ah, the 90s GM power steering whine. First car was a 2000 Grand Prix GT. This brought back many great memories. With HUD, Dual Zone Climate, the trip computer and leather, this was about as highly equipped as the GT trim could come!

Things to look at is the unibody rot , if you jack up the back end and you can't open the rear doors , there is a problem.

Yes, replace MAF. Also, check that the fuel pressure regulator is working, dying while driving is a good symptom. Bad temp sensor will do similar. So many things that the computer checks will give odd symptoms. Did you add the correct type antifreeze??? Power steering fluid is probably still low! Or, a failing pump. OR, simply a stretched serpentine belt! KNOW exactly how to flush coolant, and bleed out air, otherwise you will get low coolant light. Replace AC pump, leak test, and recharge system will work fine. Easy investment, install a new water pump and ALL coolant hoses. 3800 V6 was originally an AMC design, purchased by GM, from AMC. Excellent design reliability.

i say its a sensor and maybe a ground or gauge stepper motor issue. i read around and people point this stuff out. they also say to make sure the connectors at both ends the sensor and where it plugs in at the other end close to a computer are connected proper. hopefully this fixes everything

Also… I have daily driven cars for years that only lasted 2 weeks in the hands of another driver. Old cars take a little more care to keep them together, including how they are driven.

I worked for a dealer when these were new. Fun, quirky piece of crap. Easy to fix, and you don't need to drop the tank to fix the fuel gage.
