The 16" MacBook Pro comes with a six-core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and the 5300M 4GB graphics chip, which are pretty decent specs for the price.
But are those specs powerful enough to do what you want to do with your MacBook Pro? Will they handle the workload compared to an almost fully-specced out model?
We compared the base model to one with with an i9 8-core CPU, 32GB of RAM and the 5500M 8GB graphics chip, which is priced at $3500.
In this video, we test everything from benchmarks, video editing with Final Cut Pro X, photo editing with Photoshop and Lightroom, and we also mention programming, Logic Pro X and 3D Rendering.
We did that to find out how much you get from spending that much extra cash, and we see if the base model is actually powerful enough for all of those tasks!

I do 2D animation. Will the base model be good enough for me? I don't have the budget to go any higher. So I am hoping a prayer that the base model is enough. Render time is not important to me. I can wait a few extra minutes. Also, 512 GB of storage is enough for me as well. So even though the 1 terabyte sounds AWESOME, it's not needed for me. Power is the main thing I need.

ALOHA from sunny Hawaii! Love this! I bought an iMac with an i3 about a year ish ago. I'm now getting into video editing so I wanted to upgrade and had trouble deciding between those two options (i7 vs i9). The i9 is definitely great but a bit out of my price range. This comparison with the graphs definitely showed me that while the i9 is great, it's completely OK for me to use/purchase an i7 with the content that I'm making (my videos are 1080p, with no 4k footage at all). Thanks so much for this video! Definitely helped me decide what works best for me in a clear, concise and completely understandable way. Appreciate your content!! 🌺☀️🌴

I considered upgrading from the base model 16 inch, but the base model 2018 15 inch I have for work handles basically everything I throw at at it (Software development). So I figure the upgrade from 2018 to 2019 alone would be more than enough. I believe nearly all users (except serious professional video editors) would be more than covered using the base 16 inch.

Just purchased the top of the line 16”. i9 2.4ghz, 64gb Ram, 8gb video. I bought this at this level because I want it to last for years. A lot of times you buy a system and 3-4 years it’s not enough for editing photos, creating time-lapse etc. I have a mid-2014 with 16gb of ram with a 2.2ghz i7 processor and a 5 minute time lapse took almost 12 hours. I am hoping to reduce that time as well as start video editing as well. Good video, loved the specs and the results for each test. I have to say I was thinking of a Surface Book 3 but I wanted the upgraded ram as I want this machine to last me 8-10 years. Plus I have made the switch-over to all Apple products!

This is actually really making me consider the i7 instead of the i9. I'm going to START learning photo editing, start doing more video editing (i do it at work professionally but the production company provides old Mac Pros for us to use for that), and learn music production as a hobby that i hope would eventually become a side hustle or main hustle in the future. And i feel like the i7 with RAM and GPU being specced out would be the move. I'm not going to be doing 8k RED Raw video editing or 40 Megapixel image editing out the gate so the i9 might be overkill for me. By the time i get good enough to need it, i'll probably be in a spot to be able to upgrade again anyway.

What I want to know is, with day to day use is the i9 just a bit snappier downloading webpages, opening applications and such. Honestly not having to wait that extra second for a web page makes more of a difference to me than rendering a clip. I’m going to walk away from a clip while it renders regardless. But I have to sit there for an extra second or even half second while a page loads it just makes the experience way less seamless. So, is it different in that respect?? I’d love to know. Thanks!

I do have ONE question though - I’m thinking of getting the top model but wanted to upgrade the graphics card as you recommended. I use mainly adobe photoshop and illustrator with some lightroom and FCPX use (mainly 1080p-4K footage from my Fujifilm xt3)..... if I got this model of Mac, would I be missing out massively by not upgrading the RAM? I’m currently using a 2014 15in MacBook and have done my video work on that so know that any Mac I get will be much faster than my current but just wanted to know what people thought about paying extra $ for more ram if I’m not a heavy duty video editor. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi there, Max! Love your videos. I'm getting ready to buy a new 16" Macbook Pro and your vidoes are really helping me make the right decisions on specs. One of the last details that I need to sort out is whether to get 32 or 64GB of RAM. I plan to edit a full-length (i.e. 90 minute) documentary film on the laptop, using 1080p to 4k footage. Mostly 8-bit (not 10-bit). Do you have any details on how those two different ram levels differ under that scenario? I want to be sure to get the best performance when working with the entire film on a single timeline. I also do lots of shorter film editing, but am mostly considering 64GB for the full length film. Thanks for any insights!

I‘d say it depends on which software you are using and how many effects you use. FinalCut and Davinci Resolve strongly rely on gpu, so get the 8gb. Premiere mostly uses CPU for rendering, that‘s why it‘s slower. The lower i9 + 32Gb and 8gb 5500 is a wise choice I think.

@SvenskaIdioterna
@SvenskaIdioterna 4 жыл бұрын
Same here. I also want the 5500 8gb for sure but as for the processor, I'm not as sure. I kinda feel like 32gb ram, 5500 8gb gpu and 1tb ssd(though I can survive with 500gb, I don't want to have to worry about storage and I want to run windows+MacOS on the same laptop and have access to most of my stuff and still space to spare, so 500gb is really the minimum of the minimum). I have a max budget of around 3500USD(the laptop I mentioned with the i7 is 3850usd or i9 around 4000usd where I live) so it's kinda tight. I'll probably phone apple and see if I can get my hands on a 10% discount, it's not as if they won't have a big profit margin anyway, students get 10% after all, I'll be a student from this autumn onwards(probably), but I can't wait 6 or so months more, going crazy using a 500usd budget piece of sh*t that gets on my nerves 24/7, be it the screen, fans, performance, coil whine, wi-fi connection or bluetooth. Literally named it "CraptopDeluxe" in windows options. If I can get a 10% off, I'd be able to fit it into my budget, albeit barely. Otherwise I could also get a dell xps 15". Exactly the same specs for 1000USD less(I also have 12% off voucher there), but I don't trust their quality. Already tried once with an alienware worth 3600usd that I got for 3000usd, fan issues and incessant, loud coil whine, no matter how many times they replaced the fans or even gave me a replacement laptop, the issues persisted, so I told them to take it back. Luckily they did and now I have the money to spend for the new macbook pro 16". Still... It's so hard to justify the 1000usd extra, especially as I need 150usd or so for externals so that I can connect anything. Let's see if I can get some money off to buy the macbook pro, otherwise I might have no choice but to go with the xps 15" due to money.

After watching most of your 16” mbp videos from all your channels, I still can’t decide if I should go for the base i7 + 32gb ram or i9 without any upgrades. With this video I have concluded that there isn’t much of a difference with the 5300m vs 5500m for gaming and light video work, so I think 5300m would suit me just fine. I do occasional video editing with a mix of 1080 and 4K videos, I use LUTS and some effects as well. Anyone please help me decide and tell me why is the other one better over the other. Thanks in advance!

i7 6-core is definitely good enough for both gaming and light video editing. (CPU matters more for RAW codecs) 32GB of RAM will help a bit for video editing and just having a bit extra for having multiple apps open and for the future. (Won't really help for gaming) 5300M is very very close to the 5500M 8GB for gaming, and not too far off for video editing unless you're doing things that use more than 4GB of video memory. That's a great choice. i7 + 32GB

Photoshop test suggestion. Add layers/blend modes/effects/masks to a document till it's over 500mb and then export/save in different formats to get a better idea of bottlenecks and speed variation between the two configs.

As automotive KZfaqr and 4K long videos, I am planning on getting upgraded model with 8GB GPU, RAM is to expensive can’t justify it. At this moment 16GB should be enough. In future I will sell this any way when Apple provides more resources for both future models and get a new one.

Please tell us what specs we need on mb pro for regular working professionals? Like, not editing videos? ... Like me... I'll be running several Microsoft office programs (especially word docs with dozens of jpegs each) and very many chrome tabs, lots of screenshots open but not fancy editing (just underlining and drawing boxes), and many Google drive/docs/sheets/Gmail tabs open ... All concurrently, and running Samsung DeX as a virtual desktop, probably with 2-3 monitors. Sometimes music in the background and sometimes watching videos to gather information. ... Should I spec out for that?

hiii, great video! I still need some help haha...for just some video editting, photoshop and illustrator, do you think the macbook pro 16" with 16gb and 1tb ssd would be nice or the pro m1 13" with 16gb and 1tb ssd would be better? I like the bigger screen but, in any case i could take the 13" one and get a second display if this would be the best choice considering the difference prices... I'm just not sure about the best computer system in general. (maybe in both cases with final cut pro included). thaanks!

If you wanted to run boot camp for gaming how much SSD space would you recommend? I probably would only be using it to playing 5 games. Mostly driving simulators and FPS.

It seems weird to compare models with different RAM. What's the difference between an i7 with 16 GB RAM and an i7 with 32 GB RAM? The different RAM sizes seem to make it impossible to know whether the difference in performance is from the processor and graphics card, or just from having more RAM.

I'm a music producer working mainly on various DAW's, but recently I've started doing music production streams on Twitch as well. I was thinking of getting the base model and upgrading the RAM/CPU or both. The RAM for music production and the CPU for streaming. I don't think that upgrading the GPU would make a huge difference for me music production wise. I don't think my DAW's are using a lot of graphics memory and if at any moment I should decide to also stream games I would do that through my PS4 and a capture card or the Remote App. The only thing which worries me is if the GPU can handle my DAW and the streaming software at the same time. What do you guys think? Does that make sense or am I maybe missing something? Thanks for your help!

Hello there Max Tech family! Even though I am new to the Apple world, I am already enjoying it with my Iphone 11 (my first Apple product). I am new to Apple and I just decided to move from Windows pc and I just bought a 2019 16’ Macbook pro. I am excited but also worry coming from windows all my life. My question Max Tech is if I need an antivirus for my new MacBook Pro. Are there a real reliable antivirus for a MacBook Pro? Are they lightweight at all? I have always heard Macs never need an antivirus software, it will never happens, bla bla and more bla. I think that is not that true now. And that is why I am clueless and a little worry since I just bought my first Mac computer and it is going to arrive between 15 or 17 days from today. Please, can you give me a sincere advice about antivirus topic?

hahaha Jon Sine represented in the video! He was impressed by the new macbook and not the 2018 one, which actually sucks for music production. And yeah, the i9 will be significantly better when it comes to music production as almost all DAWS benefit from multi-core performance. With heavy projects those extra 2 cores will come in very handy :)
