Transform Low-Res Graphic Into High-Res In Affinity Photo

In this Affinity Photo tutorial you learn how to turn a low resolution icon graphic into high resolution by using a Gaussian Blur Live Filter and Levels Adjustment Layer. If you watch till the end I show you a fix on how this also works for colored logos as well as PNGs.

Simple shapes like the ones in the first and second examples can be traced as vector graphics in just a few minutes. With your method, all sharp corners are rounded off. Vector graphics have the advantage of being able to be scaled later without any loss of quality.

Also a distinction should be made between upscaling the DOCUMENT and upscaling the CANVAS. A big ( no pun intended) difference. 😊

One of the issues I have is when I'm scanning my own drawings and sketches. If I scan in pencil sketches, is there a way of darkening them and cleaning them up (I tend to use CURVE/LEVELS and Threshold). Is there an easier way? I know that I could, of course, draw them in pen for darkness, but have you any tips? Thanks.

Using a darker pen would probably be the easiest. I would then probably use Curves/Levels to increase contrast. Not sure if Threshold would do the job since the edges tend to get very pixelated. So I’m not too experienced with “scanning” drawings, but I think you’re on the right track! Hope this helps :)

For faint lines I’ve always duplicated the layer and change the top one to multiply, if that helps.

can you use the same technique to fix a burry picture ?

Nah, unfortunately that won't work. This technique only works on simple graphics. To fix blurry images you might want to look into different apps like Topaz AI (but to be transparent I have no experience with any other apps than Affinity and Ps)

Firstly, the logo gets distorted by such actions. Secondly: logo should be in vector.

This method has its merits, but I wouldn't have chosen logos as an example, because rounding off the sharp corners changes the logo and the font. Not a quick fix, just a first step before cleaning.

You need to adjust your math a little 🙂 2500 x 2500 is almost 100 times bigger then 256 x 256. An easy way to illustrate this is to compare HD 1080 with UHD. You take the 1080 image, and double it both with and height. This results in an image that is 4 times the size of 1080. Not two ;-)

You're right, strictly speaking: the AREA is 100 times bigger. Rensi means the SIDE is 10 times bigger, of course. 🙂

ey Rensi. so you basically showed to ppl, how to destroy every sharp part of the logo and make cry every graphic designer that originally did this work... Why you dont show ppl that they can easily use some real tracer (if you dont own some commercial solution, try inkscape, or online tracers), or give it 10 minutes and redraw the logo? its soo simple and the result is much better...
