As others have already said, Gene Vincent was a '50s Rock and Roll artist, he was one of Ian Drury's heroes.

This is anything but a fun song when you dig into the lyrics, but if you don't know Gene Vincent's story, it's not going to mean much to you at all. For me, this is Ian Dury's heartfelt tribute to someone who inspired him, and I find it both moving and brilliantly written.

The song is a homage to the 1950's American rockabilly Rock n Roll singer Gene Vincent. The artist toured the UK a lot in the 1960's and was well loved. His big hit was Be-Bop-a-Lula.

We know that song! I guess Ian really liked him. That explains the music as well. Very rockabilly.

@@hanierfamily Ian Dury's story is fascinating. In childhood he had polio and in his latter years battled cancer. And all the in-between years with the great music and a life lived to the full. There is a great BBC documentary out there about his life with Ian going back to the old places and reminiscing about his life. Ian Dury: On My Life. Sadly not on BBC anymore but it is out there on the internet if you dig for it.

@@garyleeharper there's also a couple of videos on You Tube of Wilco Johnson talking about Ian and the time Wilco spent in The Blockheads...turns out the rest of the band had too much history with Ian to be able to deal with him, so they used to get Wilco to do it as he was the new boy. Well worth a watch, it's pretty funny.

An ode to Gene. Gene Vincent and the Bluecaps are rock n roll legends. He died too young.

If you study Gene Vincent videos then watch Ian Dury it can be seen that he even adopted some of Gene's stage mannerisms in particular rolling the eyes to look upwards, and btw he had the best rhythm section in the business!

Watching your faces as the song changed gear was a delight. I remember this song from when it came out circa 1978 during the first flood of British new wave/punk. Made for some interesting parties.

Thanks for the mention guys. Very sweet of you. BTW my user name is from the Greek cynic philosopher Diogenes (who lived in a tub & was the original grumpy old man), but that username was taken so I stuck 'agogo' on the end as a bit of a joke. Very small joke.

Gene Vincent was a 50's rock'n roll singer, much admired by Ian in his youth. His most famous track is Be Bop A Lula kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbd8kqWnndTGdKM.html Gene had an accident which caused him to limp, something which Dury identified with as he had been left with several disabilities after suffering with polio when young. You really need to try & listen to all the tracks on the album, Ian's an incredibly entertaining, witty (& often very naughty) story teller. I accept his very London take on life might not be for everyone though.

I've always wondered quite how much a tribute to Gene Vincent this actually is. Gene Vincent wasn't a pleasant man, could be difficult to get along with... He had a habit of pulling a gun on people, just to watch their reaction. Bits of the lyrics might or might not reflect part of this.... Sweet Gene Vincent, one in every town'.. Good thing or bad thing? 'Who slapped John'.. Probably Gene, he liked to throw his weight around. 'farewell to money owed'.. Has he stiffed the hotel? Also an interesting song from another point of view. Some of the lyrics are from Gene Vincent song titles and lyrics. There's a weird little subset of songs written like this. The other example i always remember is by The Lords Of The New Church and is called Li'l Boys Play With Dolls, it's made up almost entirely of New York Dolls lyrics
