I've been to Plaistow, which is in East London. It's a pretty rough, working class area, of the type which Dury loved to write about.

Justin, you can't finish with Ian Dury before you have to listened to What A Waste, Hit Me With Your Rythym Stick and Reasons To Be Cheerful (pt 3).

this reminds me so much of my youth, my god, musically it was BRILLIANT, from the boredom of mainstream correctness, punk ripped the arse out of 'normal' and i was lucky to be a part of that energy for want of change 'for the better' i might add. Story: i had just moved into a new flat in Manchester Uk and i had dropped a contact lens on the carpet outside my door, the carpet had a swirly pattern, (hard to see), i was on hands and knees looking for my lens when one of the house occupants arrived, home from his work, in he came with his bicycle, nerdy look with glasses. I told him what i was doing (looking for my contact lens), he asked if he could help. SO, both of us on our knees looking for my contact lens and i knowing that the track Plaistow Patricia was going to turn up at some point, i should have just gotten up and taken the LP off the decks, but instead, i tried to guage it and hoping i would find the contact lens before the track arrived. OH Hoh! never happened, 'ARSEHOLES BASTARDS FUCKING CUNTS AND PRICKS' rang out, my head shot up, his head shot up, he looked at me in horror, like i was satanic and he backed away slowly and went up the stairs in shock. I can honestly say, i NEVER seen him again as long as i lived in that accomodation lol and i have Ian Jury to thank for that lol Bless him. Goodness we were just rebelling against the 'STAGNANT' world then and much more so now. Lost to bs. Punk Rock for me back in the day was my first major break through to 'reality', a raw truth that spoke energy and rarely aggression, just ripping the arse out of all that was wrong and dictorial in this world. I love your laughter by the way, it was/is, still that wonderful energy to those who understood/stand LIFE. Bless you :) xx

Plaistow (/ˈplɑːstoʊ/ PLAHST-oh or /ˈplæstoʊ/ PLAST-oh)[2][3] is a suburban town in East London, England, within the London Borough of Newham. It adjoins Upton Park to the north, East Ham to the east, Beckton to the south, Canning Town to the south-west and West Ham to the west. It was originally a ward in the parish of West Ham, hundred of Becontree, and part of the historic county of Essex.

When I was at school back in the 70s, my mate's copy of this used to jump at the beginning, so we'd hear: "...and pricks ....and pricks ...and pricks ..."

I think I've said it before but you have to take the first verse in it's entirety. The pivotal word is 'aerosol' . It's not a euphemism for one's anus but it's what's been sprayed on the walls of the dismal environment that Patricia was raised in. It's a very sad story, though comically told (as usual). & I think Ian's anger reflects his sadness about a wasted life.

A drummer's ear, for sure, JP. 'Caught the edge of the snare' indeed. I was working in a rep. theatre when this album came out; the sound engineer would play it over the P.A. while we did a particularly long set up required for one play. How could I not be hooked by this music, played loud and clear?

As a frustrated teenager this was what I put on to let off some steam. Ian just didn't care and we loved him for it. The Blockheads are an incredibly talented bunch of musicians and Ian gave them some fantastic stuff to work with.

Cast yourself back to the late 70s. My ex wife, before I'd meet her was sitting at home and placed the vinyl af New Boots and Panties onto the turntable in the lounge at her home. Her father, an officer in the Royal Airforce was sitting in his chair reading the broadsheet press when the speakers fired up 'ar5eholes f@cking c@nts and Pr1cks'. At which point Wingco chirped up, 'I think that's enough of that' Ian Dury & The Blockheads were really very special.

Justin, Justin, Justin, Your attempts to pronounce English always have me giggling (I am English), take the place name Plaistow for instance, now how would you say " tow truck"? yea, so why is it any different here? From when I was a kid I would always break down a word into it's parts, there are always exceptions of course. I knew you'd have a lot of fun with this album lol.

There's something about working class songwriters and slice of life story-telling. Middle class and posh songwriters don't seem to do it, probably because their lives aren't relatable enough and they know it. There's no way to make suburban comfort defiant in the same way which works for rock and roll. But it also means that when most music is being made by rich kids, it leaves no record of society in their generation at all. It's just pleasant noise with no context or lasting significance.

There's a really good disc that came with a Demon Records release of NBAP where Ian went thru each track talking about it. With this one, Ian wanted to get all of the rude words out of the way at the start, leaving the track to flow on as it does.... Classic album and excellent reviews of each track. You've not got there yet, but Blackmail Man was a classic track to end a late vinyl session .........

if you can possibly get hold of Handsome by Ian's previous band, Kilburn and the Highroads, you will see almost an evolution of Ians songwriting with many pointers to tracks off NB&P. (One of the best albums as far as individual track quality goes IMHO. Beggars Banquet by the Stones being another IMHO). Peace and love. 🥰

...and this is where Ian Dury kinda loses me. This seems like a pastiche of his other work written to make the album a bit longer. Often he's funny in his depiction of various London/South-East low-life characters but this goes too far and isn't interesting musically.
