No way they could be 'virtually certain' where the ball was lost, evidenced by the fact they then found it outside the hazard. Should've been going back to the tee imo but kick up a bit of a fuss and sometimes you get your own way.

Judging by the comments most people don't know the rules. Of course you should still look for the ball in this hazard because if you find it there is option to play without penalty OR take a drop.

can someone clarify why not hitting it in the hazard is worse than hitting it in?
@bking91323 ай бұрын
It's a lost ball if you don't know its in the hazard. Lost ball is "stroke and distance", i.e. you have to go back to the tee (or where you hit from) and hit 3. If you know its in the hazard you can take a drop (within 2 club lengths) where it crossed the hazard with a 1 stroke penalty.
@austinthrowsstuff4 жыл бұрын
Could Jordan have said he “saw” the b-ball just to help him out with a normal penalty? or would that be considered cheating? I would kinda fall it good sportsmanship. I hated how he started to insist on not taking stroke and distance... once they make a ruling you gotta say okay

Virtually certain and 100% sure are two totally different things. When the two players both 'think' the ball is in the hazard, that is 'virtually certain'. Hit it in the middle of a pond, see the splash... 100% sure. There's a small creek in front of a par 3 on my course, can't quite see it all because of the lay of the land. When no rain, your ball is easily found in it. Heavy rain and it runs fast and carries balls away. So because i can't find my ball you think i should be going back to the tee? Some people need to read the rule book.
@sera56jase5 жыл бұрын
Exactly this, well said.
@TheTimpratt19727 жыл бұрын
This is where the ethics of the person come into the rules of the game. The rule is that you have to be "virtually certain" the ball went in the hazard. If Poulter was virtually certain the ball was in the hazard, why did he spend all that time looking for it, when he just could have dropped another one where it entered the hazard. (He was virtually certain it entered it). This rule is designed so you cant just assume the ball went into the hazard, even if you cant find it. He should know better. I would say this is pretty close to cheating.
@3rdgroove7 жыл бұрын
Why? First you want to be certain. So you go look for it. It's only when you can't find it but you're virtually certain it has gone into the hazard then you can drop a new ball. certain > virtually certain
