It all became a little unravelled unfortunately, when he then tried to wriggle out of the penalty for the lame excuse that his ball wasn't marked. He thought too, that mentioning to the official that he didn't move the ball might have merit as to why he shouldn't incur a penalty? Funny that he didn't know where his ball was, but knew that he didn't move it?

Per one of my other replies, note that there are two marshals nearby (@ 0.40), but they do not have wire flag markers. For some reason, they don’t use these at the PGA Championship, although they are used for most other PGA Tour events. So there is nothing for marshals to use; they can point if the caddie or player asks them.

Jerry v this isnt why play is slow. Never have i seen someone stand on their ball, and they rarely need a ruling during a round. Slow play is caused by people taking too long over shots trying to calculate every variable when it is impossible and they end up hitting a bad shot anyway. If you have a high handicap then just walk up, select a club and hit the ball. Play has even slowed down a bit since the new rule of leaving the pin in. Some old guys in my club want to leave the pin in even on 3 foot putts which means we have to go pick up the flag and put it back in before they can putt. It’s dumb. It was quicker before when everyone had to putt with the flag out.

Micky M. Yeah either a rule where it is always in or always out. But a choice of either in or out sometimes slows down play. Personally i dont like putting with it in. The ball does rattle the cup like when it is out. All the putts on tv that i have grown up watching for tiger to win a major for example had the flag out so my instinct is when the flag is in it isnt proper. Now i could adapt if they made a rule, but i just think flag out was more fun and quicker sometimes. Tbf practice rounds have sped up because people just leave it in all the time. But tournaments i feel have slowed down

With 100's of spectators and pgatour fore-caddies all over the courses nowadays why did someone not tell him he was approaching where the ball came to rest. Another thing is that the rough at some of these tournaments is so high that the ball can literally be buried under a sea of green. The only way to then find it within the time limit, is to step on it by accident. Then the player gets a penalty because the course conditions completely hid the ball from the player, not to mentions someone could have said hey it stopped in this general area. Seems 100% ridiculous and out of order.

Bullshit. Rules are rules. It's pretty cut and dried. At that time, if you touch your ball, it's a penalty. The fact that the oficial didn't know that the bill could be cleaned is astonishing.

This is obviously under the rules prior to Jan 2019. Now, under rule 7.4, the accidental moving the ball while searching for it, there is no penalty. Additionally, the Rule for dropping has changed from the procedure used here.

Just heard a guy on TV yesterday saying if you accidentally step on your ball while looking for it, you could put it back where it was with no penalty. Maybe the rules are different in the USGA from the PGA? Obviously yesterday I was watching the US Open (USGA).

Nobody told me where the ball is? It's literally HIS responsibility to look for it, not anyone else's - why call a penalty which no-one saw and then try to get out of it by making excuses. He knew, all golfers know, it's a penalty

Kudos to him for his integrity. Shame that if his caddy had trodden on it, no penalty and free drop. A good rule change next year to give the player the same rule as someone else looking for a lost ball as most players would never do it intentionally. Ten points for integrity, bravo 👏

Not true. Right now, if your caddie does it, it's the same as you doing it, the penalty would have been the same. Rule 18-2 that has been breached here is called ball at rest moved by Player, Partner, Caddie or Equipment. Yes, great that it will change next year.
@andjustjizzforall
@andjustjizzforall 6 жыл бұрын
Every rule that applies to the player also applies to the caddie. Like the rule where if you hit a ball and it ricochets off a tree or other object, and hits you or your bag/buggy/cart, you get a penalty. Same as if you hit your caddie. Pretty unlucky, especially if your ball hits you in the gonads or the face.

It could be awesome if PGA actually would do an narrative explanation of what happened and how they decide if it’s a penalty! That would increase the interest of newcomers to the sport! Because I play occasionally but I have no idea what happened in the video.

If he stepped on ball while searching for it the new rule is no penalty. So should he say he was searching for it since he didn't know where it was? I have done this in the rough where you step on it while searching the area. Another rule where no advantage gained and no intention to break rule hurts a player.
