Access all videos at mrflynnib.com. In this video Mr. Flynn explains how you can use modelling and integration to find the area of the front of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. A great IB Math IA idea.

you can actually automatically integrate very easily on GeoGebra by just entering the equation of the function and the limits. Just type integrate, enter the name of the function, and then enter the start and end value.

Mr Flynn, do u think it's possible to model the area of " the museum of the future" in Dubai? Or will it be too complicated? Also, will I be able to find the volume of revolution of the building?
@nereaortegamenchen62998 ай бұрын
Do you know any other buildings for which we can apply this method? I can't seem to find an appropiate one
@ginishah10442 жыл бұрын
Lets say i wanted to paint the building, wouldn't i still need to find the area of the other side of the hotel as well as the sides? Additionally, i am planning to model the lotus temple. What sorts of extensions do you think i should consider and what personal engagement do you think would seem reasonable.
@MrFlynnIB2 жыл бұрын
Ya sure. You can work all that out and take away the windows etc. An extension for the lotus temple might be to find the volume. Not sure if a volume of revolution would work here. Don't worry about the personal engagement. If the IA is done well, your personal engagement will come through.

Thank you for the video! How could I expand this idea further in order to get maximum marks for AA HL?

Get a more complex building and use more complex functions.

hi i rlly loved ur video, For my math IA i was thinking about taking the sydney opera house or a building in sydney, what could a reseach question be if i wanna use this topic
@MrFlynnIB2 жыл бұрын
You should have an aim, not a research question. Maybe finding the volume of the Sydney opera house could be interesting. You could compare two buildings to see which is bigger.
@lielturgeman4379 Жыл бұрын
Im Math HL and im looking for a way to make this more complicated. Do you think finding the surface area of Sydney Opera House is complicated enough ?

Yes definitely complicated enough.

Hey Sir, im my ia im using basic volume calcultions (cylinder, rectaangular prism etc.) and riemann sum to calculate the volume of a building. visually and graphically it's good i have many diagrams and modellings, but im afraid that the math might be too simple for AA HL. So far, I just did the basic calculations, and will start using riemann sum to calculate volume. I havent seen any IAs using riemann sum. Do you think it would be too simple for AA HL? And is there any way to make it more complex. thank you so much.
@MrFlynnIB Жыл бұрын
Sounds good to me. My advice would be to do the IA as you said and then when finished you can decide if it needs more.

I wanted to model a building for my math IA as well but couldn't think of any that have a nice shape. Is there any chance you have a bulinding that could work, or that I could use the same hotel but with my own methods?
@MrFlynnIB Жыл бұрын
Feel free to use the same building as mine but maybe it's better to find your own. There are many to choose from.

Since I am doing SL AA, I was wondering if I should find the area and then use that to determine the volume? I'm just unsure if it makes sense or how to do it
@MrFlynnIB Жыл бұрын
@@user-lz5zw8cn1m You could treat it like a prism and just multiply the area by the width.

Mr Flynn, which AI topic is better for a MAI HL student - " finding the surface area of a building by modeling it" or "finding the volume of revolution of an object like a vase"?

Hi, thank you for the ia videos they are really helpful. I came across with the logistic modelling on your video of how to choose ia topic and you showed an example of the graph of india's and china's population and the topic was when will india's population surpass the china's population. I would like to ask if you can send me this ia via mail because I want to do a kind of similar one about turkey's population.

If I choose to do this for a structure, how should I consider personal engagement
@MrFlynnIB Жыл бұрын
Personal engagement is how well you engage with the exploration and the maths. You don't have to consider personal engagement separately. If you write a really good IA, you will naturally show personal engagement. No issues with it for this topic.
