Hey everyone! Today we're reviewing the Ibanez AFR5-WAP, this is one of the Affirma reiusses that was recently released. The original Ibanez Affirma is an extremely interesting and incredibly rare, however Ibanez is looking to bring the AFR to the masses with this faithful reissue that has a few minor updates. How does it compare to the original? Let's find out!
Big thanks to Dom @ ThirdFloorGuitars for setting up my instruments. You can find him at www.thirdfloorguitars.com

Tonally, looks like this would be a great bass for a funk player, or a pop player. I’m glad that it doesn’t look like a P bass or something else that’s been over done. I love the design! It says girls, prepare to move your hips, daddy’s bringing the thunder.

It's one of those designs that'd benefit so much from different options. Dual hb without piezo? Full on piezo fretless? Multiscale? So many possibilities, it'd be a shame if they didn't go with it.

About 6 years ago I was contracted to mod (rebuild, essentially) an Ergodyne that a friend/customer/client had purchased, thinking it was like the original. It took about three weeks and two respirator cans, but by the time I was finished with it, it was a spectacular high quality, silky smooth playing and buttery and creamy sounding to grinding, crushing, and super crisp dounding bass. He bought the bass for just over $500 and spent just over $700 getting it rebuilt.

Very cool and interesting sounds! I especially like the sound you had on the intro around minute 9-10! I think you'll be able to find great sounds for any genre in this, just not what you are used to. I admit that I don't really like the look of this bass but I remember having tried an EDA decades ago and found it incredibly comfortable. The AFR must be one of the most comfortable basses on the planet! Even though I'm not the biggest Ibanez fan (probably because I prefer some vintage vibe personally), I must give them credit for their ability to constantly innovate, pretty much never copying the others, and just being original! It's just a bit sad that their greatest basses are not available anymore. But maybe they're just ahead of me, and in 5 years I wish they'd bring back the models of today that will have been discontinued then 😅

Just got one of these after having an Ergodyne EDA905F (fretless). Make sure you turn down ALL pots to zero position on the Affirma before storage between sessions. This instrument, unlike the Ergodyne EDA905F, is completely active. The EDA905F has a passive soapbar at the neck and active piezo transducers in the bridge. The piezo setup in the bridge of the Affirma is much improved over the Ergodyine, which required the use of taper-wound strings to operate properly. When I got mine, ALL the tuning heads required tightening of their sleeve nuts, and the bridge required setting up for string height, but intonation was almost spot-on. I put Roto Sound Swing Bass 66 strings on it, and will probably switch back to DR or D'Addario on the next set.
@LowEndLobster
@LowEndLobster 3 жыл бұрын
DUDE! I actually had a battery drain issue with mine too. I fixed it, there was some contact between the pot closest to the jack and the jack itself causing battery drain. I popped a little piece of cardboard between em and no more drain. I forgot about it but you reminded me. Great comment, thank you!

I was fortunate enough to grab an AFR105 from the 90s recently (#111). I believe the run was a total of 1000 instruments, based on other research I've done. I also bought, for like $10, the original catalog to keep with it. Yours is in better shape than mine (mine has some signs of wear and holes where someone attempted to either replace the bridge or installed an ashtray cover), but if I ever find myself homeless this thing will live in my car with me before I sell it. It's just got... idk, it's got something, though. I love it over all my modern fancypants basses.

@@LowEndLobster I remember seeing them live only once, but yeah. AFRs aren't a one-trick pony despite of having a single magnetic pickup. They're tone machines. Oddly, the older one sounded abit better to me? I can't be the only one thinking that way xD

@@WildWildWeasel They're definitely versatile, just not in the traditional sense. I'm contemplating swapping out the Bart in the reissue, honestly wasn't impressed with it. I think the original sounded the best as well, though I really appreciate the added level of control you get in the reissue with the dual volumes and separate Piezo tone control. @@LowEndLobster The reissue does the styling and most of the things right, but yeah, to me the pickups sound somewhat muddier and more plasticky, unlike on the other one which sounds alot more organic imo. @@LowEndLobster I agree on the flats idea. It might warm up a crispy tone from the piezo pickups. And give an accent tone from the bass & strings that might be a new thing. I check out Reverb for a Poplar Burl one. Although I think I like the dark Walnut better. There is a lot of different colors available. I'm not sure if I like the flat finish. I have a couple like that and it drives me crazy to keep it clean looking.

i have the 4 String Version. Was acutally my first bass. Its not like any Stingray and P Bass you can get. Its a unique tone. Very Klacky if you let the piezo on 100%. But the sound and feel is just awesome. I love it. The only thing is that those Piezos are really hard hitting. If you dont adjust those things (you can on the back) the single coil is kinda underwhelming. I personally enjoyed this instrument. You can litterly play any genre with it. I played metal with it and this thing just likes everything. Great Bass. Currently thinking about getting the 5 String Version of it to replace my 4 String Verison.

As I've said previously in the EDA video, I've tried the new AFR (the 4 string, in natural flat finish) and the EDA. I've found both basses to be very specific sounding and, of course, very sectorial products. In both cases, I've never liked how they sounded: the EDA was too artificial (maybe it happens due to the combinations between the generic sounding pickup and its luthite body) under the sonic point of view and it was way too smelly (am glad you confirmed that...ghghghh), when its bigger brother AFR4 was too harsh about everything, both pickups and electronics...honestly, I found this aspect to be a little crappy despite the phenomenal aesthetic. In the first 2000s I think I could have killed someone to get one of these, but now I think that I 'm very happy about the fact that I avoided a premature genocide! :D Cheers, Jöe

Today I invented an adjustable fretless fingerboard that bolts on in the space after the fretted fingerboard ends, similar to a finger ramp, but made so you can fret it if you want and you can change the height to make it the right level so it can be fingered as well as the fretted part. Discarding that, you'd have arguably the worlds hardest and longest wearing adjustable finger ramp because it should be meant to take the wear and tear of potentially being fingered with full wounds.

They tried to hide it with silver paint - lol great bass and I am a huge fan of walnut, never having owned anything made of walnut of course it's basically #1 on my list to try but it's expensive af usually and I live where it comes from - but yeah, upon close inspection it's a fine Indonesian unit and honestly someday I will have to just suck it up and drop the cork I keep sniffing and open up my options because there's just SO MUCH good wood out there that is not coming necessarily from traditional/historical outlets or ones historically reputed to be generally diligent about QC and design.

Lol, yep the luthite didn't do the design any favors. IMO the walnut one is the best looking, then the natural flamed maple. Not a fan of the burl, plus they're like $400 more.

@@LowEndLobster It's an exceptional ride for being Indonesian. I know Ibby gets a fton of stuff built there but, this is so much further an improvement on the original I'd like to see it get prestige or even j.custom treatment. It's a very very wicked 5 and would make ESP look VERY HARD SIDEWAYS at FGN for committing such a spiritual crime against their neighbors lol

It would be helpful if you could play with a strap and let us know how things balance. Fighting neck dive all night is a thing we all like to avoid.
@LowEndLobster
@LowEndLobster 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Philip! I appreciate the suggestion. I don't use a strap because there's a lot of variables outside of the instrument that contribute to balance - the ones that stick out to me most are strap size/quality and an individual's physical build (and how they wear their bass). Two people can have two very different experiences with the exact same bass, so I generally choose not to explore those variables as it's not something that'll apply the same way to everyone.

Lobster: well, I have mixed feelings on the AFR series. I like the Burl finish- the website says Deep Twilight Flat. It is definitely unique, the bottom horn I am just not fond of on the body. Also that big section between the neck and pick up seems out of place. This is all cosmetic I know and I am big on looks. However, some of the sounds you pulled from it were rather nice, warm I would say. I used to own a SR405QM and now I own a SR506B, so I can attest to their quality and nice sound. The Bartolini2 pick ups on my 506 sound really nice, I can pull a lot of bass and mid range which is what I like most. I can see your instrument being used in a progressive rock band, just my take. Great video, it is nice to learn about other instruments. Thanks. Patrick.

It looks like a right handed Warwick Dolphin had a baby with a left handed Warwick Dolphin and... There were some issues in the womb. And! If you'd been in bands with the spazzy bassists I've played with... that headstock would scare you. You would know that it would eventually be responsible for a headline like: "Local experimental guitarist impaled on Ibanez, while playing Fender". Smart ass imaginary reporters! Screw those guys. That being said, I'm sure I could find places for the sounds it makes in my music. Quite distinctive, really. It would make an interesting fretless. The hi-fi of the Bartolini ( I miss my Buzz fretless.) mixed with the craptastic hi-fi awfulness of piezo could be stunning. I wish you were my neighbor so I could borrow it for some tracking. I would even let you borrow one of my modular synths, and a cup of sugar... or whatever. Even peanut butter. Which is a weird thing for a neighbor to borrow, but I don't judge.

@@LowEndLobster there is literally wood that smells like root beer. You thought I was joking? I would finish it with hand rubbed sassafras oil or something to keep the scent well imbued except IIRC it will give you cancer or something if you have too much on you ha ha ha SMALL PRICE FOR ROOT BEER GUITAR Black-Hearted Sassafras Atherosperma Moschatum Few woods on the market match the striking color contrasts found in this species. A native Tasmanian timber, the dark, variegated colors in the center of the log are caused by a fungus which fortunately, does not disturb the stability of the wood. The wood is light in weight, strong, easy to work, bend and to finish. Bends easily with little to no springback. Tonally it falls into a category that might also include Myrtle, Walnut and Maple, so expect an open sound with nice separation and sparkling highs. Great mid tones. Sassafras grows as an under story species in lower altitude wet forests throughout Tasmania. It is not related to the timbers known as sassafras that grow on mainland Australia. It is an aromatic evergreen tree with some quite distinctive qualities; the bark, sap, and associated oils are highly aromatic and smell like cinnamon, while its leaves have a strong sarsaparilla scent. tonewooddatasource.weebly.com/wood-details-a-b.html
