Hey everyone! Today we're doing something a little bit different! We're going to be testing out these LaBella Nylon Tapewound strings on our Ibanez Affirma AFR5 (WAP). I chose these strings for this bass to see how they will respond to both the piezo and magnetic pickup on the Affirma! Let's see how they sound!

Hi! I think there's just one major bass you seem to pass and that is the G&L L-2000 and now actually the CLF version really works on some of the downsides the regular one has such as the weight and bulkiness. Give it a try. It's the most versatile, beasty bass you'll put your hands on. You'll give that Spector some time off trust me ;) Also, it can be a great serious of mods such as the K-Mod which ads the a similar sound of single coils or even putting some roundwounds on it to tame the mids. I hope you'd give it a try ;). Love your vids BTW all the way from Israel

@@LowEndLobster Labella’s are pretty much my favorite tapewound strings. I’ve used the classic black ones on fretted and fretless basses, also the White/Clear set, but to me the best ones are the Copper White set in the 50-105 gauge. They are warmer and thumpier than the other varieties. I have them on my fretted walnut Rickenbacker Cheyenne, as well as my fretless Tune wb4F. You might like them on your 4003SW! I’ve learned to play with a very light touch and floating thumb technique over the years, so the low tension strings are my favorite. Edit:I haven’t tried the White/Gold set yet…..

@@mperk1896 the copper ones are smoother, more flexible, and have a warm roundwound tang as well as a thumpy bottom sound. (It’s a great combination). I like the black set for a clackier sort of urb tone. The white/clear ones are brighter with less thump than the other 2 sets.

I'm not sure I like this bass too much. That piezo soloed with the LaBellas almost sounds like a mild bass synth. Either way, not my cup of a favorite beverage. However, super interesting vid. I can see how playing them may be different for you, because you've said before that you play with a fairly high action and you tend to dig in.

Another great vid. May I make a suggestion about the segments with the drum machine? The drum machine is always way too quiet. It basically sounds like your normal bass playing with a drum machine way in the background. To tell how a bass sounds "in the mix" (the point, I assume), you'd want to mix the bass lower in volume, closer to a real world blend on a recording. I've noticed this issue in all your vids. Aside from that, awesome as per usual!!

Those tapewounds sound good for a few weeks and then start unraveling and need to be changed. Also if you don’t wipe them down after each session a little moisture gets trapped in between the windings and the strings start to rust underneath the windings. I went through three sets from LaBella and RotoSound before giving up on them and switching to D’Addario Chromes (flatwound) that don’t rust as easily and last for years. Wait and see for yourself.

Thanks Lobster! I have always thought tapewounds sounded cool. Those sound brighter than I would have expected. I have heard some have issues with them especially on noisy basses with shielding and or grounding issues because the strings themselves do not contact metal to metal with the bridge etc. Did you notice any of that? It may be more of an issue with single coil basses especially soloed on one pickup? Also I wonder if using a pick frequently would damage the coating? Last question, is there a type or style of strings that will help out noisier basses, especially active ones, or does It not matter?

0:00 about time, let's get some tape demos goin on get them labella white golds boiiiiii got my mobile mixer and I'm terrified to shoot a clip...lol I have a set of white gold lights to put on the Unity upgrade but then this hollow made of maple I got has crusty old BRASS strings on it. Yep, copper colored. Why would you put bright (although oxidized heavily) sounding strings on a HOLLOW MAPLE BASS? I almost put the white golds on it right there and we'll see soon. I am getting up the nerve to start potato camming - the Go Mixer came yesterday and I almost had a panic attack...gotta start somewhere. I AM NOT TURNING ON COMMENTS. I can take criticism but I don't want to wrangle trolls, I just want to share knowledge and experiences - I don't even care about subs. I'm not rich, but more money past a certain point loses its practicality anyhow and I am not going to be homeless again for at least a couple years so it's on me if I fail this time. It's been a long haul from the first accident in 2017 and I learned a lot of terrible things I was afraid I already knew... Time for a fresh half century of living and exploration. Who knows? Maybe I'll even get a third life after this second half century is up if I don't do something dangerously ignorant in the meantime.

1:45 I went as light as I could, on the advisement that the tapes for an equivalent gauge string will be tight in the nut slots or even ride on top - in any case my studies and limited trials so far seem to indicate that if you can physically play an instrument with lighter gauge strings it actually opens up the instrument once you can finesse the mechanical aspect. So we'll see - I understand that the nylon tape is magnetically transparent for matters of practicality, so I saw this a way to get a lighter gauge string in a bigger nut groove sans dicking with the nut as well as remove oxidation/corrosion and see if the claims on immortal strings tone constancy is anywhere near real because (as you'll see when I remember to forget I'm streaming) when I get going I can beat the living snot out of an instrument, french horn or bass guitar it doesn't matter when the flood comes. I like cool sounds. Sometimes more come than I can get out, which is why I need to expand my range and skill constantly. "what is that?" "I don't know but it sounds cool ay?" BUHHHHH theory doesn't cover what sounds *cool*

Hopefully it solves problem for sweaters too - I have no trouble with string corrosion. But I find that if you wash your hands every time you're technically supposed to, at least I don't seem to build up hostile shit on my skin. If you rub your eyes and it stings, you should probably wash your hands even if you haven't been doing what's technically "dirty" things with them. Chemicals, contaminants, etc. You come across them...one time I was in an arcade when I was a kid and a machine smelled weird but I played it anyhow - rubbed my eye during the game and started screaming. Turns out there was some splash on the machines from pepper spray and seems they didn't get them all clean (or knowing arcades, they didn't clean them at all, just wiped them dry)...
