It is an early 1900s computing scale I picked up off Facebook Marketplace for $150 after looking around to find information about it I definitely got to be the worst possible one for appearances in the world. I had it shipped from Wellington which is 440 ks away from me and it suffered even more damage which added to the challenge I must admit I have been sitting on it for one year knowing that it was going to be a big project while filming this project I've burnt up 1.4 terabytes of hard drive space .The video I would have liked to post would have been 3 hours long so not all repairs are shown, I did stuff up a few times which have left in the video but I'm 90% happy with what I've done there's always room for improvement hope you enjoy
And looking forward to doing a smaller project next week
Cheers Richard
History:
Julius Pitrat of Gallipolis, Ohio, invented the first computing scale in 1885. It figured the price of an item by combining the weight and price per pound. Edward Canby and Orange Ozias bought the patent and founded The Computing Scale Company in 1891. The Dayton Scale Company, originally known as The Computing Scale Company, built and marketed the first computing scale in 1891. It was part of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company formed in 1911, and became an IBM division in 1924. The Dayton Scale Division was eventually sold to the Hobart Manufacturing Company when IBM decided to stop marketing scales to retail stores.

There were a couple of small grocery store / meat markets within a short distance of where I lived as a kid and both used this exact type of scale. Brings back many memories seeing this. I am really amazed and very impressed with the results you achieved with this restoration. It is stunning, to say the least.

Wow!!!!! The most beautiful equipment I've seen being restored so far. I don't know why, but a good job like yours, bring tears to my eyes. Maybe I'm a little crazy, but it seems to me, that the old objects have their own feelings, and I can imagine them on their good times, when they were being used, and then suddenly abandoned, forgotten in a lonely place, untill someone appears and bring them into life again. The last calibration was made 3 years before I was born. Incredible! Congratulations for your excellent job dude!

We had scales come in from the 20's to the 40's for rebuilding all the time. I love that color you did, it is so good looking. The finish build is damn good for Dayton. Good job, well done. Thanks

I enjoy seeing old, “useless” pieces of equipment being brought back to life like this. In a day and age where you can weigh something with your smartphone, it’s nice to see these analog machines be given a new lease on life, a testament to how things USED to be designed and made. There’s just something so satisfying about seeing physics in action what with the combination of springs, counterweights, balance levers, and gears! It feels more authentic than the “magic” we’ve become accustomed to with our smartphones. I know that the original pricing scale probably adds value but I would so love to see a gleaming white background with sharp, crisp numerals and tic marks showing through the magnifying lenses. As a graphic designer I would enjoy the challenge of building the artwork for that. Good job! The candy apple green gives it a little more character than your standard “clinical white with a gold pinstripe” which was a more common aesthetic.

Brilliant effort and a very interesting machine! @@EpiphoneShredzzzzz for this sort of printed stuff I would start with just water and a q tip probably. There's also different types of microfiber weaves, so depending on which you have it might work fine as it did in this case.

One has to wonder with a vintage scale, how accurate it will be after the restoration. Definitely more accurate than beforehand, at least! I can imagine it was not a simple task to make sure it was properly zeroed and calibrated to display the sample weights. For the really high precision scales, you're not even supposed to touch the weights with your bare hands, as that could transfer oils onto them and increase their total mass.

Very nice, interesting choice of colour... 😝 One thing I noticed... please if you haven't already done so, ditch the cheap-arsed square-shaft screwdriver (or better still convert it for use as a chisel or punch - that's seriously all it's good for) and invest in some decent hollow face screwdrivers that don't chew up the screw slots.
