Instructions for working the Icelandic Bind-Off:
K the first stitch.
transfer stitch from the right needle to the left, giving it a little twist so that it is mounted correctly. Put your right needle through that stitch, as if to purl, reaching through to knit the next stitch normally (through the front loop)
Repeat between the *s until one stitch is left. Break yarn, pull end through last loop, tighten to fasten.
Information on things you'll see in the video:
The bulky yarn I used for demonstration is Lion Brand Hometown USA. I demonstrated using size 13 US (9mm) needles.
The needles I used are bamboo, made by Clover.
The sweater on the mannequin is my Ombre Dyed Sweater, pattern + video tutorial:

Thank you, Staci. I always find myself coming back because you manage to squeeze all the details in -- not just how to do it but making sure to show us how stretchy it is and compare it to the standard bind off. You are so good! Cheers.

Thank you for this up close and very clear tutorial! I purchased a knitting pattern on Etsy by a Russian designer and when reading through the download I panicked to see it instructed you to use “Icelandic bind off” to finish the dress sleeves! I’d never ever heard of it! Enter your tutorial! Thank you much. I keep returning here for more great instruction.

Staci. Thank you so much. I have visited your You Tube videos countless times. The forethought and planning that goes into an episode is apparent. You prepare them from the perspective of what a learner needs to know, not what an experienced teacher wants to teach. I hope we wind up in the same neighborhood in heaven. Thank you Staci for bringing this visually pleasing bind-off. As soon as you create a video with a new unknown technique (to me, of course😉), I run to my needles and try it ! I found the look of the Icelandic bind-off very pleasing, but not stretchy enough for toes-up socks cuffs. So I stopped to think about why it was so and I may be wrong, but found out it really isn't that different from the "usual" straightforward bind-off technique, except for the I-cord look and the needling method : Usual bind-off = "knitting the first stitch and the second, then passing the first stitch over the second" - vs - Icelandic bind-off = "knitting the first stitch, putting this knitted stitch "twisted" on the left needle and knitting the next stitch through the first knitted stitch (which makes the first stitch pass over the second one)" Neither technique gives more loose yarn to the bind-off so as to give "stretchability", the big difference being in the "reversing" of the first stitch, which gives it it's purled I-cord aspect, I suppose. Anyway, I'm sure to use it for other projects, because of its pleasing look. Thanks again, Staci !🌻🌺🌼

It might depend on the yarn and gauge you're using for your project. I just used this BO on the cowl neck of a poncho - it worked perfectly. It is holding the shape of the rest of the cowl, and it's still stretchy enough to get it over my head easily.

Mary Ann Buck - It really depends on the gauge you're knitting. It's worth a try...work a few inches of this bind-off on your sweater, take a look, and see how you like it. If it isn't working out, you can take out those few stitches and try a different BO.

Hi Clarine - I'm surprised to hear that. I didn't test knit this BO in a cellulose fiber, but I would think that it would still be stretchy, based on the way it is worked. I have only used it in wool and wool-blend yarns, and it is especially and significantly stretchier than a normal BO.

I love your video, I tried it and it wasn't very stret hy, I thought I must be pulling too tight. I watched 3 other Icelandic videos and they don't twist, don't even have to remove stitch from right needle to go faster. But that turned out more loose to me but i loke the look of your way , so I tried your way again and looser seems to work, there is a difference twisting that stitch back. I actually think it's prettier if not as stretchy.

I tried this bind off and it wasn't stretchy at all with the yarn I was using. Don't know if it is because the yarn I am using is bamboo or if that even makes a difference. Fortunately, it doesn't matter that it is not stretchy because I am using it on a cowl. I'll try it again with a different type of yarn next time. I like the way it looks, however.

+Donna Wilkins - I don't know of a cast-on that looks just like this...to match the two ends of a scarf perfectly, you can do a provisional cast-on, finish the scarf, then release the cast-on stitches and bind them off with the same bind-off.
