I remember as a young 18 year old driving my mother's Austin Metro, just coming out of Stafford on the A518 and a Peugeot 205 T16 in the same colour was being delivered on trade plates to the Stafford main dealer. I did a quick U turn and made a bee-line straight there as if I remember correctly they eheeled it into their showroom where it took pride of place. Myself and my best friend looked around it with dropped jaws. 40 years later, i guess it's a memory I'll remember for ever.

Harry - In the 80s I worked in a Peugeot-Talbot dealership. They sent up a brand new Lotus Sunbeam in black, the idiot director decided he was taking it home for the weekend, filled it full of petrol and promptly screeched away, showing off to the car hire girls watching, and stuffed it into the cemetary wall only 50 yards from the gate. When Peugeot sent the garage a brand new 205 homolgation special (Group B) they had disabled the engine so it wouldn't run. It had to be pushed into the showroom.

The 205 T-16 drivetrain still blows my mind. The engine is to one side, the turbo and cooling on the other, and the enormous transmission in between.
@clockdva203 ай бұрын
Yes a very odd layout with the Engine so offset to the right .but if I remember correctly they used a Renaut 25 gear trans axel gear box with driveshafts going the front and rear diffs they did real sorcing parts from various PSA group car models to build the 205 T16 the engine block was that of the then pre production 205 Deisel road car the real cutting edge part was the F1 designed Turbo Charger and Fuel system and the 16 valve head and fuel injection. That engine layout was not perfect and car would pitch forwards when flying over jumps leading to one near fatal crash in 1985 and when the Evo Version gained a massive rear wing and other changes to keep it stable during flights. Were the 200 road goings cars ever built ? If they were like Audi or worse Lancia who bother only built a fraction of the 200 road going cars and basically fudged the FIA inspection tests to gain enter into Group B. Still a very rare car indeed.

Wonderful to see the Peugeot 205 T16 - And the Burns Peugeot. I bought my first Peugeot 404 from Bellevue Motors in Newcastle (Australia) in 1969. The owner of the dealership was Tony Crossey who was a rally driver (203's and 403's) and he really taught me to drive. The Hunter Valley, where i lived had a history of great Peugeot rally drivers (including Ken Tubman). This is back in the days when Peugeots were sold by enthusiasts who were often very good mechanics. I never owned a 205 and, to my knowledge is one of the few Peugeots not owned in my family. Great cars - brings back memories. And our family still owns Peugeots. They are great cars.

Regarding those mini's. After passing my test my dad bought me a 'mini'. BUT, it was actually called an Austin Seven! She was a 1960, baby blue, number DBF 338. Synchro only on 3rd to 4th. It's when I learned double free clutching which I still do to this day? A gear stick that was a meter long. Push button start, (on the floor). Handled like a go cart and was more fun to drive than any car I've owned since. For 3v years it was my prized possession, until it got stolen and I never saw her again 😢

Much as I love the Italian stuff, these guys who prepare these fast Fords know their stuff. That X pack Capri reminds me of LJK Setright CAR magazine road test about 1980 , got me looking for 3 litre Capris at the time .
@Toby_the_Glen3 ай бұрын
I remember those days. Back in the 70 those 3.0 capris weren't really that fast? It was more that everything else was woefully slow! Truthfully, they were pretty awful, but relative to what else was on the road they could have been a Ferrari. If you were on the motorway back then you'd be doing well to hit 100mph in anything. And unless it was box fresh it would probably blow itself to pieces! Back in those days cars were far more unreliable. Any motorist would expect to have to service their car twice a year, if you didn't change the battery and tighten the fan belt in the winter it would never start on a cold frosty morning. I'm willing to be that as much as you hear everyone complaining about modern cars being 'overly complex' those same people take for granted cold weather starting and amazing reliability compared to the 'good old day'. Any journey back then was a 'voyage of discovery', you never knew whether you'd get there or breakdown on the way. Overheating in traffic jams in the summer, and frozen radiators in the winter. The only way those old cars can exist in 2024 is by super indulgent owners and by being re-engineered using modern technology, making the cars something it never was, just hoped to be?
@martinclapton27243 ай бұрын
@@Toby_the_Glen don’t entirely follow that point. A good 3 litre Essex would knock the door of 120 mph . It was a very underrated engine, no cam belt or timing chain as it ran off gears. Overheating happened in the first editions with the Zodiac , but Ford ironed that out. Provided you regularly service the cooling system, correct anti freeze mixture, radiator caps, thermostat etc they were good to go . These items were standard on most 1970s cars and relatively cheap items to buy , it’s not rocket science, unlike todays cars. Keep it well maintained the Essex is good for well over 100,000 miles. Bought a Ford Escort Mexico Mk1 October 1980 , serviced it once when I bought it , including the cooling system, barely touched car after until I sold it in end 1981.
