That quote has been stuck in my mind ever since I heard it. Being offended by men in feminine clothing is to be offended by femininity, and to see it as "less-than." I can't rationalize it any other way.

I can’t imagine how anyone on the Marc Jacobs team thought that sending Kurt and Courtney that collection was a good idea. Couture fashion goes against everything grunge stood for, of course they were gonna hate it. And no offense to Cudi, but considering how they treated the Marc Jacobs clothing, i don’t think Kurt would consider a custom made couture dress a very flattering homage... but hey, the dress is cute, and it probably costs more than my tuition anyways, so who am I to say?

As a teen of that era, fashion was super skinny heroin addicts and cutesy shit….not grunge. Grunge was an experience - angry, anti-bigotry, anti-corruption, anti-greed, anti-runaway capitalism…it was not high fashion in any way, and it was a complete misunderstanding by Marc Jacobs and team to think that the guy who couldn’t even write lyrics to set forms was going to enjoy an effort to commercialize his clothing preferences. Grunge was “wear whatever you have on hand, we got other shit to focus on.” The shocking part of the clothing was that grunge didn’t give a fuck what you thought about its wardrobe, because you needed to be focused on what actually mattered. Fashion does matter, and the hallmark of its role in grunge was that it didn’t matter to grunge.

@@deanneb6925 my pleasure. As a girl of that time, we wore boys jeans until the glory of JNCO provided us with actual, whole pockets. I noticed the stove pipes are back, but fashion has once again misunderstood the underlying awesomeness of the original, and the female version have half assed pockettes. I fit my textbooks in my JNCOs - I can’t get my hand into these stupid things. I loved the grunge aesthetic - I often wore hand-me-downs from cousins and hand-me-overs from friends. We used to have a sleepover, everyone brought stuff they don’t wear from their closets, and it all got dumped in a big pile. We’d go through it and pick out something we would wear, and the rest ended up in a bag to land in the next pile. With my cousins, it ended up in a cabinet at the end of Grandma’s hallway.

This might be a bad hot take but imo I don’t think reminding people that “well gay guys/genderqueer have it worse when they wore it” isn’t very helpful. Yes they do have it worse that’s why it’s so important that a cisgender(usually straight) male celebrity wears it. They’re normalizing wearing it. In places like Los Angeles it’s not uncommon to see but in more rural parts of America this might be one of the first time seeing it and if it’s from an artist they like and not just a stranger they might become more caring towards genderqueer individuals irl. Normalization of genderqueer behavior is really important imo and it feels like being told that it’s not good enough. Like yeah I know it’s not perfect, you really don’t have to remind me.

As a non-binary person I don't disagree, but I think we should have more representation in general: cis men wearing dresses, gay men wearing dresses, trans men wearing dresses. That's what should happen, because "one-sided" representation won't get us that far.

I do agree with @Lunar Bunny's take, however I do think that in todays society, straight cis men get a lot of praise and recognition for behaving in any way shape or form non-traditionally masculine (just look at Harry Styles) while gay, genderqueer or gender-nonconforming ppl often don't get that amount of buzz if they do that sort of thing (often it's even expected of us) . I feel like ppl focus wayyyy to much on how "STRAIGHT CIS MEN" wear dresses, like it's suddenly amazing when they give up a sliver of their privilege for a vogue cover, while queer men who have been ridiculed for being themselves just don't get that attention. The conversation about "reframing masculinity" and "new positive masculine rolemodels" is always framed around cis straight men, because the assumption is, that other cis straight men won't accept gay men as rolemodels for positive masculinity.

I see a lot of people saying that “Kurt wouldn’t have approved of this adaptation”, speaking primarily about Kid Cudi’s dress; I think if we base our progress on “what Kurt Cobain would think”, we’re limiting ourselves and slowing down the process of eliminating the gender aspect of clothing. While I do agree that it would be fantastic to see mainstream celebrities supporting more easily accessible clothing, progress is progress, and the form fitting aspect of Cudi’s sundress is still a turning point moment, especially considering black men still today being shoved in a box of masculinity. It’s like, one step at a time, y’know? I think the bottom line is that everybody, regardless of gender or size or expression or sexuality, is allowed to rock a dress, and the more people start doing it the better. Period.

I think I don’t like Kudi’s dress because it doesn’t have the easy “just threw on my moms dress to piss people off” look, it negates everything that grunge is about, its too forced and he obviously paid a good amount for someone to make him a well made dress. To really pay homage he should have went to the thrift store and picked out an old dress to wear. Post Malone’s look/styling is more similar to Kurt’s though it was also probably expensive.

thank you for this! i hate how harry styles (and i hate him in general) was praised for wearing a dress when many men before him have done it already. also kid cudi wore a dress similar to kurt's to preform on SNL but got no acclaim or praise. however im still happy to see men wear dresses when the world STILL thinks they cant edit: i need to also say that as a black person, we do not usually accept anything non conformist. i am a long standing cudi fan and the majority of the fandom are straight cis men, especially black men. black people have been righting conformity in our own communities for centuries and yes its life risking. my point is that cudi, as a black man will not receive praise from it bc black men are expected to be masculine. harry styles is thin average looking white man, he will get a different reaction another edit: i despise harry styles for his fandom and overhype. his content is sub-par but hey, he's white

Preach!! When my papa (Grandfather) saw him, Cudi, in a dress he said: “Black Men are now becoming, White homophobic slur men.”

Styles (totally not a fan btw) got sooo much pathetic insecure white male outrage for that vogue thing. Sadly lots of insecure people on all sides love to lash out about all sorts of honestly trivial things. Having said that by doing these kinds of things Cobain Malone and Cudi expose the racist homophobic underbelly

I think that's a HUGE thing that's missing from Bergdorf's statement, the factor of race and masculinity. Black men are pressured to perform specific forms of masculinity (juxtaposed to white masculinity which is seen as the "norm") at all times, never be caught "slipping", lest they also be subject to homophobic violence even if they're straight. Saying they won't face as much hatred or physical danger... I do get the point but I think they missed the mark a lil bit on that one😐

Id recommend checking out Brian Molko from the band Placebo who emerged in the late 1990s UK music scene, his androgynous look clashed with the hyper-masculine Britpop fashion and was a hot topic for his gender-bending looks but hes really overlooked nowadays

It is so iconic that a filipino artist Francis Magalona referenced it in his music video Kaleidoscope World. Him and his band Hardware Syndrome also wore dresses.

i really love how confident and idgaf vibes they gave especially Kurt Cobain. i remember one time i went skating with my friends where i had an eyeliner and a blue lipstick on. there was an older person (about 40 years old) he started weirdly looking at me and started saying things like "you're a man" "is that make up?" "why do you wear make up?" "what kind of clothing is that?" me and my friends ignored him and kept going our way but it was very funny how he was mad for someones looks and then getting ignored and yes we had Nirvana playing on the speakers on full volume.

I love the similarities and contrast between Kid Cudi and Kurt Cobain’s looks! You can tell one references the other with the color scheme and simple styling on both, but one is more “I found this at goodwill and I think it’s fun :D” and the other is more “just got back from a fancy tea party and it’s time to rock!” To be clear I love both looks, and I think they both suit their respective wearers aesthetics very well!

@@retro-rose1194 he probably would be! Now that he would've been 54, it reminds me how we tend to lose our elders. He'd be the same age as my parents and their homophobia is why I can never get close to them as my true self, and it would've been nice to have someone to point to and know not all of us die young.

As a trans person, I think saying "oh cis people are applauded for this" is super inaccurate. Cis people aren't applauded inherently for playing with gender- if they were it would be easier for us trans people to play w gender without facing violence. Rich people, specifically, are more safe when doing these things because their wealth protects them. And even then, if you think that the cishet rich people are only getting praise and are not facing blowback... Than you mostly hang out around accepting people online. Good for you! But let's be realistic, people who hate trans people, also hate cis men wearing dresses, bc they're transphobes (thats how they see plenty of trans people to begin with! They don't separate out someone playing w presentation and someone who is a different gender, they don't have the nuance)
