I really like Saturday projects like this because they warm me twice. Once while I’m working, then again when I see the finished work!

G2 specifically states do not use primer as it affects the bond of the epoxy to the metal. There are different reds to choose from their website.

It's progress on the BRZ/FRS. I'll take it. However, for caliper paint, it's powder-coat or bust. I get it though, the target demographic are people without big budgets and with entry level skillsets. Unless you've blead brakes before with someone experienced, the job can be very dangerous. In my early days, I was rushed off a property and only did a partial brake bleed. I ended up with 3 brakes with air in the line. I didn't learn this until I actually locked up the one working brake while trying to stop. Always drive a manual boys and girls, engine braking can save your life. Powder coating requires a second vehicle and experience bleeding brakes. (Because a shop usually does the paint work) For people who just want decent looking red brakes, the spray on the vehicle method, used here, works in a pinch. However, the whole "paint your calipers" move is usually poser behavior. That is, unless the paint color is different than red... And the car isn't also red. Save up the money, get a set of willwoods (or Brembos) if brakes is a performance option you're interested in. They come powder coated from factory. Which is where the painting your calipers trend even comes from. If you're still car shopping, just buy the sports package of whatever vehicle suits your fancy. All the manufacturers have a "racing" trim level now, which most likely comes with the coveted performance brakes anyway. Depending on the vehicle, a better set of tires and wheels is a better investment than brakes. Brake pads are also a very valuable investment for track day. Don't expect to run more than 3 laps on ceramics. Ask me how I know. As someone with a tuned 300+ hp NB miata, painted brakes aren't impressive. They're a cosmetic... And a cheap one at that. I'm more impressed with a standalone ECU as the only mod on the car. None of the other performance mods will even matter if new maps can't be written to the ECU. I'm still running factory rotors and calipers. If I did paint my calipers, I would powder-coat them white to color-match the car. Which might have actually been the aim here. (color-matching the car) Good content, interested to see more like it. Take care boys Cheers.

Don’t paint floating calipers. No need to draw attention to your poverty braking system. Especially if the calipers are small and sitting behind giant aftermarket wheels. Fixed calipers get a pass in some situations, but never on a Porsche. Too many Porsche d-bags painting their calipers yellow so they look like they have PCCB’s or red so the vehicle looks like it’s a more expensive trim level. Also I’d recommend just sending them to a qualified shop to disable, inspect, and replace old or worn pistons and seals.

@@jmo82592 Painting your calipers a performance color is a kin to putting caliper covers on in most cases. The aim is usually gaining respect (happiness) from peers (other car people). The problem is that this approach has the opposite effect. The owner actually loses respect from other car people. This has everything to do with the paint doing nothing to improve or change performance. There's nothing to respect. They're just painted stock calipers. The only time this behavior gets a pass is when the caliper color is an accent color, or matching color. (Saw a neon green set once, looked interesting) In those cases, the calipers should be pulled and taken to a powder coating shop. For instance, I have a white NB miata with black accents. To make the calipers pop/stand out, I would powder coat them white to match the body color. If I powder coat them red, I then look like a racing tryhard. It looks like I'm trying to convince people I have Brembos when I don't. What would I be trying to match, my taillights? Lol. In the case of this video, the idea might have been to try and color-match the car, as the car is also red. But painting the stock calipers of your silver civic, the color red, is going to get a whole lot of hate from the community. It just looks like low quality RICE and not at all like a clean and tasteful build. If you really want red calipers, the best thing a car enthusiast can do is get some Brembos or Willwoods. But really, performance brakes aren't needed at all for street use. Even track use typically only calls for fresh brake fluid and track brake pads. You only really need bigger brakes once you've increased wheel/tire size and have a significant increase in power or weight. In most cases, big brake kits are completely unnecessary. Therefore, painting your calipers is a little like slapping a vinyl on your car. Its a low effort, low skill, low budget task, that gets more eyes rolled than heads turned. One thing's for sure, the vinyl badge "locally hated" goes real well with red calipers. Hopefully, this provides some context. Cheers.

@@christopherlowery855 I appreciate this thorough perspective. I wanted to get red calipers for my Mercedes but only because it looks cool. But after reading, I don't want eye rolls. And your explanation makes sense. lol. Should I get a different color than red? or no color at all?

@@myapower2609 Color matching the car or accents looks awesome. Anything that contrasts the wheels also looks good. White or pink wheels, with a dark caliper color. Or even better, black/charcoal rims against pink or white calipers. There's also lavender and baby blue as basic colors. Just depends on the mix of colors that are on the car. Stick with 2-3 colors at most. The color options are almost endless. Dark car means light accents. Light car means dark accents. Wheel color you can either make the accent, or you can make the caliper the accent. With a light car, you can achieve both by color matching the calipers with the body of the car. Just make sure the colors don't clash. You could also color match the caliper color with the lug nut color. Or color match the calipers with a pin/racing stripe color. I saw a car once with white rims, a lighter blue body, neon green claipers and lug nuts. It looked respectable. Not my taste, but respectable. Powder coat if you can afford it and don't need the car for a few days. The calipers will need to be pulled, so know someone who can do brakes if you don't. The finish will not only last, but will be easy to clean and doesn't chip very easily. Shops can do it for relatively cheap and they usually do a good job at taping off the important areas. Just look for a local powder coating shop. You can DIY powder coat, but it's messy and hard to do if you're not experienced. Red still works, so long as the message of the build isn't big brake kit wanna-be. Enthusiasts appreciate effort. Low effort means low respect. Before deciding on any particular color, take a picture of your car from a few angles you can see the calipers from. Then photoshop the caliper color you're thinking about as a layer. Then you can mix and match colors until you find something that you really like. Feel free to get opinions from friends and peers. Before I had a 2-tone black/blue fade done on an NA Miata I have, that's what I did. The final product came out amazing. Color choice is more or less a one-way street. Best of luck on the build. Cheers.
