i work with a bunch of guys that drive old rangers and mazdas as their dailies. i work at a rock quarry so most guys buy high mileage beaters to drive to work. the rock dust will scratch the piss out of paint. those old rangers are like roaches, you cant kill them. they will be the last thing on the planet once we all go extinct. I learned how to drive on a old late 80s 5 speed ranger.

I would put my 2004 6.0 Ford cat motor against any of the old boys and most of the newer trucks odometer reads 443,829 miles currently. Got it in 2018 and haven’t spent more than 1k in parts

@@shuruff904 people now a days want a truck with all those fancy features. I once had a Titan, it was such a basic truck. 180k miles. Truck felt very reliable and the 5.6 had lots of power. I sold it cause the truck was very boring. Now have a 2013 raptor it’s a way better truck with comfort and features. Bigger price tag too. when it comes to doing truck things the Titan can do the same but at a fraction of the cost 😂

We had an 83 F100 with the 300 i6. My grandpa bought it new, towed a camper all over the country as a traveling preacher, sold it to my stepdad with over 200K miles on it, stepdad drove it (beat the hell out of it) for another 200K+ and the transmission finally died.

I heard that some of the Expeditions would lockup temporarily then would cool down and restart. Per mechanic at a Toyota dealership.

Yes sir. We ran a 7.3 for our construction company. It had over 300k miles o it, bagged two deer, hauled tools/materials daily, through Seattle and Portland traffic as well as the outback with NO engine issues, ever. Then that stupid kid thought he had room to make a left turn.. RIP our diesel work horse.

My daily driver 97 powerstroke has 400k on it and is totally reliable. Never leaves me stranded.

I don't put it down to just 'money'. They are getting feedback on 90-day old and 12-month old vehicles, and looking at the 'small stuff' you mentioned. If you want to get the nicer of the brand new cars, and you're going to sell it in 3-4 years, that's what JD Powers is most useful for.

Never quite understood why JD Power glosses over Mazda, the Skyactiv engines are probably the most reliable direct injection engines out there and Mazda has the best interiors outside of a luxury brand. And they also manage to make even the pedestrian CX-5 feel like a sporty, luxury SUV for probably less money OTD than a CR-V or RAV4

There was a letter that USSOCOM sent to Toyota because they had imported some of the Tacomas into Afghanistan and in the letter they praised Toyota's reliability. They claimed the Tacoma withstood absolutely everything that was literally thrown at it, including RPGs and it never broke down once.

Yep 👍 I worked in Afghanistan for over 6 years , those Toyota Hilux pickups were indestructible, literally bullet proof. And here’s a bonus ( how about those Kawasaki Mules ! ) those things took neglect and punishment like I’ve never seen before and you couldn’t kill em’ !

I’m no ranger fan but I do know people who’ve gotten 200k+ out of them and other ford products. That seems pretty good from my perspective for anything.

I nearly bought a Ranger in 2005 and regret it. What put me off was the untried 2.5 diesel. It was a new engine replacing the previous 2.6 gas found in the Courier. Don't know if they did have problems but after 8 years I never sore them on the road. They didn't seem to last.

@@2DogsVlogs I’ve never owned or ever heard of a diesel engine in a Ranger. The most durable engine in the Ranger was the 2.3L naturally aspirated gasoline engine. We’ve own 2 of them with the 2.3L. The first one we put over 500K miles on it and the second one we put almost 700K miles on it. Back then we changed the oil every 3K miles with conventional Valvoline motor oil. We now change our oil every 6 months (which is only about 1,500 miles) with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil, even though our Ranger has only 36K original miles. We change the oil on our Subaru’s every 5K miles with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil. My wife’s Outback has less than 30K miles and my Forester just hit 13K miles. High mileage oil has additives that reduce engine wear.

That 401 is an AMC engine. International Harvester used AMC engines in some applications.

@Walt Moore you have that backwards. AMC was not producing many of their own parts. They cut deals with others to build their products for awhile. I took a 401 out of an old international grain truck and put into a 1974 Jeep Cherokee. I had a 1976 J10 that had a blown engine and used parts out of a Ford 360 to get it back on the road. AMC in the 60's and 70's was struggling and using a lot of parts from other manufacturers. You could bolt Ford and International parts right in with no modifications or very few.

I'm the same with 96-98 5.7 Chevy, had good luck with several in a row. The 07-08 were ok, not quite as good. Actually was eyeballing a sr5 the other day, might be nice to drive something different.

@@kingpest13 I had a '90 Silverado for a decade, had no issues until 185,000, then within a few months the transmission and engine needed rebuilding. Also owned a '97 and 2010. The '97 was old when I got it but it was a solid rig. The 2010 was a lemon. I've had all Toyota since 2012, zero issues with any of them, from two Corollas, a 2002 Tundra, a 2018 Camry, 2010 Tundra, 2010 Camry, 2019 Tundra. We still own all but the Corollas, they were just kid & work cars. Haven't had a mechanical issue with any of them. I still love the old squarebodies & 88-98 Chevy trucks. I have two 5.7 SR5 TRD 4x4 extended cabs now, 300,000 on the 2010 and it pulls my lawn care trailer all season, zero issues or complaints. The '19 is still our going to town rig, but it'll eventually be making us money like the other ones. Not trying to slam GM at all just stating my experiences.

How many transmissions have you gone through? It is rare for a Chevy transmission to last more than 150,000 miles. Dodge Dakota was a piece of junk. One was lucky to get 100,000 miles out of them without a major repair. Few of those lasted past 175,000 miles before being junked. Ford Ecoboost engines are nowhere nearly as reliable as the 5.0 V8 Coyote. The second generation 5.0, which was sold from 2015 to 2017, may have been the most reliable pickup engine ever made. Then Ford messed it up in 2018.....

@Wesley Garrison I was thinking of the half ton Silverado 1500. The 2500 has a heavier transmission. Everyone I know with a 1500 needed a new transmission by 150,000 miles. Some a lot sooner if they didn't maintain them properly or if they pulled in over drive. It amazes me how so many don't understand what "Tow Mode" is.

Ranger's 2.3L I4 engine was designed by Mazda for Ford.

My second vehicle is a 2022 Toyota Supra. My primary vehicle is a 1988 K1500 chevy with over 700,000 miles on the chassis (LS3) ( second engine and rebuilt transmission) Still runs great. The usefulness of a truck for me means I have always owned a truck even when I could afford only one vehicle.

Yes original motor on both, u cant kill them. Even running out of oil the engine wont turn over. Uses oil pressure to fire the injectors. One had thr 4r100 trans and was rebuilt twice. The other was a ZF and original

I have a 92. Multiport injection 2.4 and 5 speed. Starts when it shouldn’t, as long as it has battery, no matter how cold it is. Even taught all three kids to drive manual in it. Never expected it to still be here.

There was an 86 f150 stright 6 that had 550,000+ miles that just would sit at my shop but we drove chevy express for work trucks. All guys beat the fucking balls off them. Would them so low on oil for so long. There was an 01 , 03 , 05 that all still run as back ups and new guys trucks. The 05 is an everyday truck and needed a transmission rebuild that costed 3k which was cheap around here for that work. I just picked up a 2014 f150 5.0 with 100k miles as my personal. Both chevy and Ford make some good vehicles. If I didn't see those chevy express vans with the Spartans box body get the absolute balls beaten off them and run 99% of the times I'd hate on chevys all day lol.

The old 4cyl rangers (the twin spark SOHC ones) do it routinely

My gmt 400 has about 633,000km and it still running strong and is still on the stock engine and 4l60 that being said I the Trans has been slightly modified with a shift kit and a bigger trans cooler but that’s about it

E150 with a 4.6, 670k, and ran like a champ, but the floor started to rust out. Edit: only one spark plug change, and when I say it ran like a champ, I mean you'd think it had maybe 150k on it.

i had 1 with 4x4 put 300,000 on it when the tranny went, up graded to a f150 and still wish i had the dakota ,the were a big little truck , much more comfortable to sit in.

Had one. Blew the tranny at 80k. Had professionally rebuilt. Blew again at 160k. Had it rebuilt again. At 230k it was shifting poorly again and sold it. Everything else held up well. Was getting rusty the last few yrs as all vehicles in the Midwest.

@@markneukirch577 1992 had a 5 speed manual had to changed clutch at 120k also changed water pump around then . clutch was failing again at 198k and gave it away I could have gotten another 50k easily tho.

Could not agree with you more - Ive got a dakota with the 4.7 in it and even after moving up several tire sizes it lost NONE of its power or throttle response. Crank shaft and cam shaft sensors were replaced and the truck is insanely reliable. Its 4x4 prowess is insane - I know I can depend on it at ANY given time. I have jumped hills and it lands like it was built for it - 75mph on Klevar 265s 75 15s on dirt roads no issue - 35 mph offroad easy - will not get you stuck in mud or sand unless its you who did it. I loved that truck so much I bought a dodge durango - same generation with the 4.7 except this ones AWD and this impresses the heck out of me. Gave it a 2 inch life, 275 75 18s, 2 chamber muffler exhaust - also insane prowess in mud and rough terrain. Tons of room in it for taking the family literally anywhere at any given time. This also starts up every time, I should upgrade sensors while Im thinking about it - only weak spot is ball joints but I have spares. At no point do I ever feel worried Im going to be stranded, or cant go somewhere because of weather. The transfer case output shafts must be made of tungsten or something - because you literally cant put enough force on the system to break it. Rock freaking solid. Ive owned rams, fords and chevies - I wont buy chevys anymore because of the transmissions but my trucks both have 200k on them and transmissions are shifting like they should even after everything I put them through. Cant say enough things, I love that Im seeing more and more dakotas in my area where people are putting money and upgrades into them. I think I started a thing in my local town.

Yeah when he said power strokes weren’t so reliable I’m like has he ever heard of the 7.3. Which for all intents and purposes was maybe the most reliable diesel in heavy duty trucks and would easily go 1m miles. They may not have had the power gain capabilities from tuning and go fast goodies of the Cummins or duramax but I’d take it over any of them. It does what it’s suppose to do.

You’re lucky with your 4l60e, my 05 had a little over 100k on it and decided to take a shit while I was headed home. Lost 3rd & 4th. Now the 80e was way more reliable and that’s why people would switch them out if they could. As for manual transmissions most companies don’t even really offer them, at least not here in the states, which I find ridiculous but a lot of it is because this new generation doesn’t want to try and learn to drive it.

Man you’re lucky I got an 05 with the same engine and it started to rattle due to low oil pressure before 200,000 miles. I was worried I would blow the engine at some point if I didn’t go in an repair it, but my transmission decided to blow before…

The 3 valve will last but only with strict following of basic maintenance, change and check the oil every 3k miles, with synthetic oil, and high quality oil filters. I have seen them with over 300k and still running great. Most don’t make it past a 150k before trouble starts.

It was really only the 09 that had the issues, as that was the first year that they modified it for better towing payloads. That being said, my 09 has 398k on it and still goes just fine.

Don’t know if I’d switch out a Tacoma for a diesel unless you need a much bigger truck. No matter how good the 06 dmax are; they won’t hold a candle to a Tacoma in year over year repair costs

Good old R12 refrigerant. Had a 92 Celica that blew ice cold. It would freeze you out in 100 degree weather! None of these new vehicles cool like older ones with R12.

I just bought a 2004 with 273k last month and just changed the timing belt for the same price and my mechanic said it was the original timing belt which is absolutely insane to me that it lasted that long but feel immaculate and I plan on keeping her alive another 15-20 years I’m hoping

What year is yours? Mine's a '97 GMC with the same engine and tranny and close to 300, 000 kilometers (Canadian miles).

@@jimervin1637 Well, it a '95 which replaces my last truck, also 4.3 motor. In this case a '97 Chev that was a former ATT&T truck. I believe I got something like 275 before the automatic trans began failing so I parked it at my first wife's place and use it for parts. The truck ran great but used a quart of oil a week which was not so bad considering I drove about 400 miles at the time and that was cheaper than buying a new motor, but the worst problem was water/antifreeze consumption--you had to check and add every day. The damn thing had a cracked block but kept right on ticking!!

LBZ and LLY are NOT the same at all, other than the basic block design and a few shared parts. Most of the engine is very different. If you really knew about the Duramax, you'd know why everyone wants the LBZ over the LLY

@@Chevtec that's pretty much the difference. Less emission components, and a different tune/parts. And the LBZ is easier to work with and has the cp3 pump instead of cp4 (I think the lly has). And yes, they are the same engines, same size, same exact blocks, just minor things changed on them.

Ya, 6.4 could have a bunch of power(high rail pressure), but that thing was a garbage heap. When it failed it failed massively. Its an extremely expensive engine to fix, if it could be fixed. At least the 6.0 could be fixed and could be made decently reliable, but Fuc* the 6.4

@@SwingArmCity yea, my dad had an 08 king ranch 6.4 and we deleted it at 130k and luckily after it was an extremely solid truck with great power. We sold it at 170k with no issues in between then other than an up pipe leak. To my knowledge the truck is still running strong

Therw are two million mile tundras with that same 4.7 v8 with no repairs done to the engine, and these trucks hauled and towed well over their rated capacities. They were hotshot trucks for the oilfield. Keep the timing belts changed and it will last forever.
