The SBC. Mars Hill. Hillsong. John MacArthur. RZIM. Kanakuk. Dave Ramsey. Willow Creek. Liberty. The list goes on and on.
In Christian denominations, universities, churches, and nonprofit environments, people are experiencing trauma.
If you're wondering if you are in an abusive environment, this interview could give you the insights and language you need to understand and describe your experience.
And if you just want to prevent your organization from becoming abusive, please watch carefully and share this with others in your church or organization.

I've worked for both several Christian and non-Christian organizations over my lifetime (Im 70 now). If I felt I needed to bring up a difficult issue with leadership, without exception, the NON-Christians were much more open to hearing me out. Now, they weren't willing to change, but they at least heard me out. In all the Christian organizations, they made me the bad/wrong one, and I had to leave. There was no humility or willingness to hear anything I had to say, however gently. Is it any wonder people leave churches?

Heartbreaking. The absence of humility is strikingly hypocritical in an organization run by Christians.

How can the dangers of this happening in church run biblical counseling programs be warned about without making all church counseling suspect? The power dynamic is extreme between someone in a spiritual position learning of others vulnerability, weaknesses, sin and abuse vs that person coming for "supposed help". It can be a recipe for further abuse. And there is little that can be done to combat it because if the person seeking help speaks out about hurt, abuse, power abuse etc. it can easily be turned on the counselee - they aren't trusting God, they are submissive to the counseling and moving forward anything shared can be taken to leadership and used as a weapon against the person. The counselor carries no accountability. The counselee can be setting themselves up for greater abuse, silencing, manipulation. Ultimately in my experience, forcing the person seeking help from the church to have to leave the church. Speaking of vulnerabilities with the wrong person will heap abuse ontop of abuse.

It's a huge challenge. Licensed therapists offer more protections than a church counselor. They are required to complete certain educational milestones, take exams, and have supervised clinical hours. They're regulated by state boards who can discipline therapists who abuse their power. And they have strict ethical codes that govern their interactions with clients. I would like to see churches consider how they can meet or exceed these ethical standards.

@UncommonPursuit In theory I agree and want to agree with the idea of biblical counseling in churches. In practice I have experienced great hurt and witnessed others go through great hurt by biblical counseling done wrong. I warn against ACBC counseling. I have also experienced helpful "counsel' from a different church that was biblical. But after coming face to face with the abuse of power that can happen in biblical counseling, I am extremely wary and untrusting.

@@shannonsundby5725 I understand and I have similar concerns. I worked at RZIM where Judy Dabler was a consultant. That's not to say every counselor is bad, but there is a need to earn trust.

@UncommonPursuit It is so sad that it takes so long and a trail of hurt people before those who shouldn't be counseling are stopped and exposed, especially in a church. I was in support of biblical counseling and even went through 2 1/2 years of training until my own experience opened my eyes to the dangers and damage that can be done. Maybe it goes along with church growth initiatives and churches turning into businesses or religious social clubs.

@@shannonsundby5725 Yes, I think the financial incentives are a huge part of it. It's heartbreaking - I sit in grief with you at the losses you've experienced.
