I talk in depth about Blossom End Rot and why it occurs and how to address it. I also show you how to identify tomato leaf spot diseases. I covered spraying in other videos but do a quick review of different products you can use. I also talk about strategies for growing tomatoes so you can manage diseases and still get tomatoes.

The last two years I have had a big garden. While I love it, it really does tie me down in July and August and my family is upset because I had to duck out of vacations with them because of the garden, so I may have to cut back. I found that the early garden is my favorite, the greens, radishes, and stick onions.

Hi, Gary. Really enjoy your videos. Early blight is always a problem here in Indiana, too. My mortgage lifters and San Marzano have it bad. No blossom end rot, though. I'm going to experiment next year with the rain gutter/grow bags system under my covered patio (it's really a pergola we covered with clear corrugated, so sun gets through, but rain doesn't. My husband loves sitting out there when it's raining). Anyway, hoping we can avoid early blight and splitting.

Good video, very good information! Folks, here’s my experience. if you already have blossom-end rot in your tomatoes, or better still, BEFORE IT HAPPENS, simply dilute cows milk (any milk, 1%, 2%, 3 weeks old, totally spoiled, half price, rotten, doesn’t matter) and sprinkle it all over the plant with a watering can and then saturate the root area. The effect is virtually instant, is ‘organic’ (whatever that means), and will stop BER completely - UNLESS YOU’VE WAITED TOO LONG (more than a couple of days) until the condition is endemic, ie, has spread through the entire plant. I’ve also used human calcium supplements crushed and dissolved in water but this is a bit expensive and was only used the first time I experienced the issue when I panicked a bit. Did it work? YES! Is it organic? Who cares - if it’s good enough for me, it’s good enough for my tomatoes. In any case, I’m pretty sure these things don’t drop out of the backend of a cow but it got me a truckload of tomatoes that year. Survival of the smartest. As for early blight, the baking soda - dish detergent - vinegar - blah, blah - whatever stuff DOESN’T WORK!! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME or your baking soda…use it to make muffins. The ONLY cure for early leaf mould, in my experience, is cooler less humid weather. For late blight it doesn’t matter, your plants are going to die in 2 weeks anyway. Pick everything you can get that’s ripe and turn the rest into hotdog relish. And finally, DON’T KILL SQUASH/CUCUMBER BEETLES!!! During years when there is a low bee population, they’re about the only thing pollinating your cucurbits - they’re the very reason you have more zucchinis than friends. In my humble many-season experience, they spend most of their time inside squash blossoms and cause NO damage to the plants. If you have a total infestation it might be different but that’s not been my experience. Anyway, that’s it. Happy gardening.

I believe I have these problems solved...I used to deal w/ early blight and leaf spot every year which seriously limited my harvest and shortened my season. This year, I built proper 4x8 beds with deep soil. I use no chemicals other than one or two early rounds or organic fertilizer until the plants are well established. Nothing once blossoms appear. Collected rain water when I have it... I also decreased my watering to once per week. Let your plants tell you when they want water. I feel the soil hand at a depth of 4-6 inches and if it's still moist, no watering. I started pruning any affected leaves at very first sign of problems. I keep an eye on the area I pruned and if I see more blight or spots, I prune the entire branch with scissors. I grow San Marzanos and other heirloom paste varieties which have no resistance and are very susceptible to these problems. As the plant gets bigger, I prune the entire lower branches at the stem at least 12 to 16 inches from the ground. I now have a full 2 feet from the ground with no leaves or branches because I pruned them as they grew. This prevents any spatter during watering. I put cheap walmart box fans at one end of my beds at the ground level which I use to ventilate the lower parts of the plants often...especially after watering or rains. I duct tape plastic garbage bags on the tops of the fans to protect them from rain. They are gong strong. It's now August. I have 70+ plants at 6-8 feet each. No disease, no yellow leaves, no spots and heavy production of perfect tomatoes. They are thriving. I also bought 16' cattle panels from tractor supply and bent them in half making A-frame type trellises. They are an easy method to keep your tomatoes growing upward with strong structure. You will have them forever. These also provide the ability to protect your plants w/ plastic tarps during prolonged rains and heavy winds. This forms a makeshift greenhouse when needed which can be easily rolled up and tied at the tops or removed. I had a short bout with Blossom End Rot in a few tomatoes but sprayed a healthy dose of dissolved Tums onto the leaves, stems and extra roots growing out of the stems. The BEM are all gone. Harvest will be heavy and beautiful. I will invest in soaker hoses or better irrigation next season and probably put black or red plastic down over the soil. Azomite was also added to my soil this year and the plants are phenomal. The taste is much better than past years.

Thank you thank you thank you I'm sorry you had this problem but I'm glad you shared it with us. I'm new at gardening so it's hard for me to tell different diseases and natural end of plant life. I use both the products you mentioned. The first yr I did use the actinovate the problem with it is that it cost a 25$ to 35$ and the shelf life isn't very long and I'm on a budget I'm disabled so it really helps that you mentioned the products that I'm using. I'm not gonna lie the actinovate seems to be a very good product. Mostly I never know if I should just pull the plant so by the end of the yr only my cherry tomatoes be still going I havent had a really big tomato plant that last to the end of the yr and it may have been I just pulled it hoping to keep down disease. But once again thank you for sharing. So if I get early blight in my container plants I can re use that soil late blight I cant how can I tell the difference between late blight and early? I'm so glad to have found you been with you since I started and learned alot God bless

I attempted to fight a bad outbreak of septoria leaf spot on my tomatoes and downy mildew on my cucumbers, but sadly I think I was too late. By the time I sprayed almost all leaves had had brown spots (within a couple days of the first sign). The serenade I used fought it off for a week or so, but it was already established in the plant and mostly all the leaves have died off and the fruit has rotted from the leaf spot! Same thing with downy mildew....It's amazing how quickly these diseases get going! Great video, Gary.

Going through all your videos because I’m in NE North Carolina and already seeing leaf spot on the bottom leaves.We’ve had tons of rain the last 4 days and lots of humidity. I moved here from Oregon last year and built raised beds. My tomatoes were wiped out last year by leaf spot and early blight. Did my second spray of the year with Serenade. Trying to stay on top of it and now will spray every 7days with the Serenade. If it continues should I switch to Daconil?I’d like to keep things organic but I sure don’t want a repeat of last year. Thanks for all the informative videos. Since Maryland is somewhat similar humidity wise I appreciate your input.

My first tomato plant and pretty sure I killed it. I’m so used to plants that don’t need so much watering I was afraid of root rot so I didn’t water my tomato plant enough. But as a result I’ve got blossom end rot and the leaves are mostly yellow and wilting. Is it done for or should I try the lime wash method? Love your videos, thanks

Here in California we have leaf curl early BLIGHT and leaf spot. Along with the infamous insatiable red horned tomato worm it's a consstant battle oh and white fly along with aphids it's a nightmare. I've given up if you want tomatoes to grow here in my zone southern California near the beach you almost darn near have to hire a security guard to take graveyard shift. Beetles too Japanese beetles also. I threw the towel in two years ago because we lost our trees lemon and our Calamense tree. Now my roses are constantly battling molds and leaf spot leaf curl on roses it's awful I feel like just ripping everything out and concreting the entire front and back yard. We had neighbors move in that didn't care for their yards and once every six months the hired some gardeners to come chop down their overgrown weed sanctuary so when they were done chopping and mowing yes mowing the weeds they used their blowers to blow their devastating seeds into everyone's yards well needless to say my once pristine lawn and flower beds overwhelmed by DISEASES weeds parasites and every INSECT and aggressive forever weed virus bacteria and funguses totally wiped out my beautiful Zen garden...THIS once was my get away my passion my love my joy...Now it looks like a hillbilly or ghetto lost fo rotten neglected mish mash of ugly brown rust and every bit of green quickly jumped and mugged into turning brown rust yellow spotted black brown or covered in gray powder mold or white webs or CURLED up succumbing to the attacks of one aggressive invasion after another. I am so bummed out. My neighbor behind us has not given up but his tomato plants spill over into our yards and we gladly prune and care for the blossoms he says are for us knowing how saddened we are by this overwhelming series of non stop destruction..and suddenly we see the rotted bottoms of the tomatoes we thought it was the heat so close to the garden cinder block wall but no indeed it is calcium deficiency as you said. SO sad it also is showing signs of leaf spot and BLIGHT. Gotta let him knokw about seranade...question for you, IF WE SPRAY SERANADE IS IT ADVISED TO REMOVE ANY TOMATOES GREEN OR NOT PRIOR TO SPRAYING OR APPLYING SERANADE? and thank you for making this great video. From your fans in cazlifornia the setzers.🍅🌐✌🏼

Your timing always impeccable lol. So Gary I noticed mmm think last yr. U talked about just baking soda, water and few drops of dawn. (Which I'm using) This yr you added the aspirin. Have u noticed big difference since adding it? As much as I'm a native plant enthusiasts. I don't love crab grass grrr. Should I be laying hay around some things and mulch around others? What kind of mulch also? I laid some hay on my squash vines (side garden). And there doing really good. No signs of bugs so far. But the Borers got to two others in back garden :-/ Finally no rain for 2 days whew.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 7 жыл бұрын
I do notice the aspirin helps with the SAR response when the tomatoes don't have the disease to help them fight off future diseases. But once they get a disease the aspirin doesn't make a difference. It naturally has initiated the SAR response. If it is chemical free hay I think that is best. I use shredded hardwood. Good luck.

Got the same problems in Australia. The yellow leaf spot is so effective at killing my growth off. It seems like unless you have an impeccably clean site with a breeze, drip fed and under cover you are going to get problems with most of your plants and can't do the whole 100% organic thing. First year I didn't have a problem really, I planted tomatoes, never pruned them and overhead watered them all season without disease but now I'm paranoid as hell.

My tomatoes were doing SO well around 4th of July, then by August almost all of them had this blight, and they look exactly like the one you showed with the brown leaves. New gardener here…same. I bought mortgage lifter plants from a nursery in May. They were growing nicely. We had a horrible heatwave in July with 95 degree days for 2 weeks straight then 2 weeks of rain… so they didn’t start fruiting until Mid August, now in mid September, growth has stopped and leaves are shriveling, all that work and hope to get a midsized green tomato…so disappointing, but will try again next year.

Hey Gary, love your channel. I'm growing roma tomatoes and they starting getting BER on both green and red toms. After a generous addition of lime, the BER was reduced, but it still appears on ripening toms. I've never seen so much BER on any other plants, even with the liberal use of lime. Anything I can do, or do roma tomatoes just get BER no matter what? Thanks!

Romas are notorious for it. I stopped growing San Marazonos for that reason. You can try calcium nitrate sprays for BER. They are like 7-8 bucks a bottle in stores.. I sell it on my shop in dry form and you can make like 20 gallons or something crazy. Any way its $13. As a foliar feed the calcium goes right in the plant. www.therustedgarden.com

Yes theoretically but I haven't perfected it yet. A 3:1 ratio of water to H202 was a bit to strong. I am thinking a 5:1 ratio. Using 3% pharmacy type. But I just haven't perfected it and cant find great info on it. You might make a batch. Spray 1 or 2 different plants and take note.

You could clean the debris up. But to be honest a lot of these disease are airborne and if you have them, you get them again. My best strategy is spraying on routine and spraying before they show. Of course I also get of my schedule and stuff happens.

my tomato plants are turning yellow and then crispy brown and falling off entirely. i don't see wilt in the branches I am breaking off in the center (browning). Bsoda not seeming to do the trick either. Im in CA zone 9(a). Not humid and about 89 right now in October. Cherry tomato just not able to keep up. this year was disastrous on yields. Heat over 90 and got a 121 day and just ravished production. 40 plants and lucky if i had 10 tomatoes and only 2 squash. I digress. Any tips on what the browning is other than wilt to cause the leaves to turn crispy and fall off (completely wilted). they don't really got soggy, more like from a yellow to a dark brown crispy.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Жыл бұрын
Its hard to say without knowing the whole process. Determinate tomatoes do that after producing. If there is nothing on the leaves and this happens, its not fungal and sprays wont work. Heat can damage them, they die and come back later. But I just dont know. I’ve heard you should replace your soil if you get blight, is this true?

NO... Blight showed up right. It will show up again. I sits on host plants and floats in the air. You have to learn to respray and prevent it. Even if you replace all your soil, which is expensive, 9 out of 10 it would come back. I used to sell thousands of starts in the spring. If you give tomato starts calcium at the very beginning they will not develop blossom end rot. Blight is a different animal.

What is the zip code what you are talking about because when you google Ruffner Mountain you will get a zip code of Birmingham not Trussville.
