Nice hunt. The big piece of brass with the two holes is an engine rod bearing insert.

“Buggy shaft tip” congratulations on not calling it a “Buggy brake”, first correct description I have seen on KZfaq. Loved the research on the belt buckle plate too. Great video. Andy

Really cool deal that you could potentially trace that buckle down to a single soldier. Got to keep some of that deep woods off to scare away the skeeters and gnats. I hate those things as well! Thanks for the video.

Great video!! I think you’re dead on with that plate, a guy to talk to would be Gary GW Williams of Hanover brass in Mechanicsville VA. The only plate I’ve ever dug was stamped brass 1850’s militia and I’ve seen examples of them dug on the Spotsylvannia battlefield so I’m confident, especially early in the war , the equipment issued wasn’t as uniformed as most people think.

I will look him up, appreciate the info 👍 and I agree with you. There was more variation and mismatched pieces than folks today realize.

Great research on Hofer's plate. Another possibility is that Mr. Hofer was killed in action, and his buckle was taken as a souvenir by a Confederate soldier. Either way, it's a great find and story!

It may have just been the camera lighting or angle, but at first I thought there was what looked like numbers on that buckle. possibly a large 9 or 6. I noticed that your research came up with a union solder in the 16th? Was there any numbers or regiment markings on the Buckle Or was my mind playing tricks on me! Either way, a great find and a cool relic.

Thanks Raymond! There's a bunch of good ones, but the two I use most often are, A Handbook od Civil War Bullets and Cartridges by Thomas & Thomas, and Mullinax's Confederate Belt Plates & Buckles.
