The IELTS writing section Task 2 essay may ask you to discuss a topic, compare two views, or show the advantages and disadvantages of something. They may also ask you to give your own opinion. The approaches to an essay with and without an opinion can be very similar or very different. Do you need balance in the body paragraphs or take a side? Is the thesis different for each essay type? Finally, I've found my role model. Adam is the best teacher I've ever met. Each and every of his lesson enlightens me in some way. Not only does he teach so well, he also does it with benevolence. Hopefully, I'll be a good teacher like him someday.

Hey, Adam! Would you not mind if I enquired you about whether I should use some archaism in my essay, or I must shun doing them? For example, I know the preposition "unto" meaning "to" (not infinitive). Thereby, when I am being communicated I may say "He/She/it/You/They told UNTO me that ... " to the others/others. Of course, there are other words, namely avaunt, anent, an, whereinsoever, whatsoever, howsoever, thereabouts, withal, whilst, whereamong, ween, albeit, howbeit and so forth. Some words it is possible to find in Oxford dictionary (upon their site there is a list); yet, I wonder why not use them in my essay - though I have the experience about this which makes me assume that most of readers can be confused and thereby having not understood my thoughts. Have you ever seen them in someone's essay? Your efforts are unevaluatable as long as it does help to write logical and correct texts in English.

I am a little confused. I believed that for hybrid essay where I have to discuss both sides with opinion, body paragraph 1 should be for the side I disagree with and body paragraph 2 should be for my opinion. But Adam you have not done so. You have used a structure for the purely opinion essay where we start arguing in paragraph 1 with my opinion, then you gave some concession to the other opinion in paragraph 2 and quickly went back to your own opinion. Can you please explain? Thanks.

Is it ok to give a solution when has not been asked, even though your approach is to give a balance between to options? Last time I composed an essay, in which I introduced a third view, as my opinion, and I was told that we need to discuss the given views rather than suggest a third option or a solution.

Even a separate single letter counts as a word ..For example, 'a' is counted as a word

Hi Adam, I am genuinely thankful for all your valuable lessons. Yet for the second essay in this video, the sentence "namely, way of employment" is quite puzzling to me. The word "way" used as an uncountable noun without an article seems to be unfamiliar to me. May you please show me way of using this word? oop, I have already employed it for my question without even knowing how it funtions. What a shame. Thank you in advance.

The thesis statement for the discussion essay with and without opinion in your essay is "Both viewpoints have merits, as this essay will demonstrate. " and "As both viewpoints have merits, I tend to believe that everyone has a duty to balance his or her on- and offline socialization. ", respectively?

When a question just says 'Discuss'. in the end, Do i need to present both sides impartially or just present one side which is mentioned in the question? Moreover, i understand that there is no need to present my opinion here, please comment if i am right? For example: 'It is important for foreigners to know something about the history and culture of the country they live in'. Discuss. Please suggest, what is the best method to approach these task.

Hi Adam, I am following your videos on writing which are very informative for my Ielts exam at the end of this month. In this video I was quite confused between the 1st essay and 2nd essay. I felt both were almost the same. Discuss both views and state your opinion. But why are you not leaning towards your opinion in the Internet essay and why are you leaning towards your opinion in the part -time study essay in the Body paragraphs? Can you please elaborate the diffrence b/w these two types of essay for the opinion based. Your answer will be really helpful. Regards, Shreyas

Sorry, but at 6:09 it looks more like Discussion vs Problem Solution, rather than Discussion vs Opinion. The second paragraph does NOT mention anything about YOUR point of view regarding the internet. It says there is a solution, but does not present your opinion. Correct me if I am wrong Adam. Thanks!

Adam, I recall you advising us to do not use he/she... This introduction of yours, with "his or her" is ok? Would be ok to use only "his", for instance? Cheers
