Thank you for this! This is my first year (2 - 6th graders). Lost with curriculum choices but it’s working out. I took the don’t explain myself to people and go with your gut. We signed them up for a ASL class in someone else’s home but I do not feel comfortable (long story) so I’m canceling today.

YES!! I need to stop the “why do you homeschool?” conversations with strangers! I do love having convos with people who are genuinely interested, but strangers who are thinking that I’m doing them a disservice…nope!

We all have “regrets” for things we have done in the past. Learning from our mistakes is wonderful! ❤ Thanks for the insights! Mrs. Karnes

Sometimes I wish I could have a perfectly consistent homeschool schedule, but then I realize, they really are learning so much and doing well, even if it isn’t “picture perfect “ or what I think it needs to look like. Having littles definitely adds to the challenges and joys (sibling bonding) of this as well!

Is really hard to not over purchase homeschool stuff. I try really hard not to purchase until we are somewhat close to using it, but often fail.

When we first started I felt like we had to have a dedicated homeschool room and tried to recreate public school at home. The first thing I tell anyone who asks me now is to find the flow that works best for your family, and don’t try to recreate what you are trying to leave behind! AND the overbuying of materials!!!!

I’m sure your channel is such an encouragement to others navigating the wonderful world of homeschooling! I know the one year we homeschooled, I would have loved to have had your channel to plug into! The conversations with strangers is point on! Better ways to spend time for sure. The same can be said for why we go to Christian school!

The biggest thing I would have done differently is to homeschool longer. Forty years ago, our choices were limited.

Really enjoyed your video! Found it through the collaboration FB group and it was fun to watch. I had the joy of being homeschooled myself so I think I learned those lessons from my mom and luckily didn't have too many negative homeschool choices. Although... the one I definitely fell prey to was ALL THE HOMESCHOOL ITEMS. I cannot say no to a book. It's my kryptonite. I just love books, love reading, love reading to my children. So whenever I find good book deals, I'm all in. Books and homeschool "resources" haha. :) Thanks for sharing!

Such good advice! I have and will not again interact with strangers like that, you are right pointless. I do say I am homeschooling to see if they are homeschoolers and whatnot. I do not go into depth about it though. YEs, I am also learning to be less strict about where we do school not everything has to be at a desk. Thanks for sharing!

That stranger talk. I can relate to that. It can happen in any subject you open to them. It's their nosiness that makes me tired. 🤦‍♀️ We could not turn back time, but it's still great you learned a lot! It's a good thing you shared all of these, especially to starters. 👏👍

This is why I have not attended a homeschool convention yet. I would get myself into so much trouble! I have given away lots of curricula. My biggest takeaway: it is ok to change curriculum if it is not working. No guilt over "wasted money." Now that our only is 10, I am trying really hard to remind myself to "savor" the little homeschool moments more. It goes so fast.

Such great points!! Yes, we learn from those mistakes, but don't we all have those moments? I look back and think, if I only knew. When I started and was figuring out the system here and about homeschooling, at the same time, I bought too many things at the thrift store. Years later, I've purged and now shop on my shelves before buying anything, even if it's not new and shiny. I've always struggled with hip trends anyway, lol. The one thing I would do differently is relax and not be curriculum-worried in the early years. PreK to 1st Grade, for sure! Like you, my kids are close in age. So I ended up overburdening myself with tons of school work in those early years, trying to keep up with daily chores and then throwing in medical diagnoses that you could never plan for; it was madness for a few years:( But in that madness, I've learned to take it one day at a time, even though they're older now. And now I try to tell myself what I wish I had done then. Us taking time now and then to bake, sew or do something else, if they want to, will not make them fail in life, lol. Plus, there is learning there too. Schedules are important, but I've learned so are those not so planned ones too. This was a great video, and thank you for sharing your experiences with us! 💙

Oh boy does this bring back memories of my experiences homeschooling my daughter. If I could go back in time and do anything over again, I would simply pace myself a bit more so I would not of burnt myself out. My kid had such an insatiable appetite for learning that I just could not keep up with her. Silly me, it never occurred to me to also implement some independent study. :P

This is great! I really resonate with not taking my son to coops, activities, or groups that I already know he won’t enjoy. It took me too long to realize that things I’d enjoy are not at all things that he will be comfortable joining.

This video is so hilarious and true😊. Thanks for letting me know that it is okay to get rid of all the millions of dollars I spent on curriculums that we are not using and not feel guilty for not using them🥴.
