I never understand why movies don’t use proper Gatling gun sounds. Movies always go for an electronic whirring sound, but when you hear one IRL it sounds so much cooler

Now this brought a new level of realism to the scene. Especially the "growling" sidewinder lock - it really emphasized an ancient tomcat vs the sleekest of the sleek Su-57. Nice job.

How a guy can make this scene sound literally 100x better than the studio could amazes me.

Every sound authentic, from the sidewinder tone, to being on their radar, to being fired upon, to stalling. They should've hired you to do the sound. Great work.

I love how the Su-57 sounds like it has a normal autocannon rather than a gatling gun.

This is how the scene *should* have sounded. As an aviation Nerd, the real sfx made the scene so much better, not just the cannon sounds, but the Sidewinder tone, and various alarms as well. Thank you for making this!

I never understood why they don't just use real sounds from the actual equipment. They already sound incredible

It’s worth noting that the F-14‘s sensors were not on during the first dogfight, so the radar warning would not have sounded.

Random fun fact: when the F-14 fired it’s first missile, the shot and frame is merely identical to how the original film shot all the missiles firing scenes.

For the RWR sounds, I think it actually made sense for them to not make any sounds initially as the CB was pulled out, and then wasn't pushed in until they fought the third guy, and that's when you correctly hear the RWR tone at that time

Having the correct sounds elevates the immersion so much. Those missile lock alarms, the warble of death, adds so much tension. And then the guns opening up, just that gutteral, unnatural growl. THIS made me feel like I was in the fucking plane. Absolutely phenomenal work.

Every sound that has been added is spot on except rwr warnings. While dogfighting two Felons, radio/radar was off. Later when above the sea Rooster turns on radio/radar and radar lock warning sound comes up. If you listen closely to the original sound you can even hear missile launch warning sound in the movie.

I wish they had used these sounds in the movie. Really adds to the immersion.

The RWR special threat indicator and the missile launch alert on that second missile mixed with the constant radar lock warning *really* fucked with my DCS stress lmao good stuff man

Thank you, as somebody who has employed the M61, you have no idea how much those gun sounds bugged me with every watch through.

The combined Gatling and Fiddycal sounds is fucking brutal, and the actual Sidewinder growl over the Top Gun lock-on sound is orgasmic.

This is what that scene **SHOULD** have sounded like. Oh my god this makes that **SO** much better! Well done!

God, now _that's_ the stuff. You know what had more accurate gun sounds than Top Gun? _The Final Countdown,_ a schlocky time travel film from the early 80s, because they used actual footage and audio of the F-14 firing its gun.

I appreciate that, on top of fixing the gun sounds, you added other sounds like the missile warnings, various beeps and boops, and the classic AIM-9 growl

I like how it makes the Tomcat sound much older than the newer fighter. Makes the scene feel much more dangerous.

I literally got goosebumps and my hair stood up. Those actual RWR and M61 sounds are genuinely terrifying. 100/10 will be watching a few more times.

One of the things I love about this scene is we are getting to see things Maverick likely learned during his time at Top Gun in the F-14. It’s almost like he, his instructors (Viper and Jester), and fellow F-14 pilots are all shining in this scene. Everything they taught him helped him survive and showcase how elite training will give you a chance.

That "Left engine fire!" alarm in Sukhoi's cockpit was such a nice touch)

Everyone’s talking about the m61 sound and aim 9 sound, etc, but I’m also impressed with the improved gsh 301 sound. In the original, the sound for the rate of fire was almost there, but it lacked the deep tone of a true 30mm cannon firing, the sound used in this version packed more of a punch and used a deeper tone, which went along with the weapon’s caliber

It's defintely a fun addition for people who know the sounds. I don't think any of the RWR stuff was active until Rooster turnedon all the fuses when they went over the ocean (The TID and radio come online too).

Now it just needs more realistic engine sounds and air rumble in the cockpit.

honestly I always imagined this particular F-14 was retrofitted with a single-barrel autocannon by the hostile military using it in this film, which excused the original slow firerate for me and logically made sense for the most part.

10,000% better. You even got the passing projectile crackle spot on (even though this wouldn't be audible over the cockpit slipstream noise).

What I loved about that moment is that we're shown some insane stuff from the Black pilot as well. To the point that even Maverick is absolutely impressed at 00:48. It's not just a "evil guy in an evil plane" setup, they were matched in skill almost equally, one had more resolve and a tad more luck with the rounds, basically.

Great sound design, I would add hard buffeting like a flag flapping in the wind when the fighter pulled that super maneuverable controlled stall . The amount of air hitting the plane at that aoa would definitely be loud. combine it with Doppler shift and a fast fade as the plane bleeds that crap ton of energy should sound quite impressive. Emphasizing build up of the afterburner sound in the silence of him free falling for him to have to recover and catch back up to the tomcat. Just my 2 cents

Loved the compressor stall alarm when Maverick "split the throttles". 🤣I remember sort of giggling to myself in the theater and thinking "Welp, there's a flame out." Also love the addition of all the extra RWR tones you added in. I remember being surprised that they added in ANY of the F-14 RWR sounds at all, there's a couple bits where you can hear them in this scene in the movie. F-14A engines were notorious for compressor stalls when making rapid throttle position changes like that, especially in high alpha regimes. Definitely a very "Top Gun" move, just like "hitting the brakes, he'll fly right by." I can look past it because the movie is loaded with charm, just like the first one.

Huh. The second you hear a real sidewinder you can never un-hear it. They're basically alive, the way they sound. They don't just jump to a tone like that. They warble exactly what they're thinking and feeling.

Genuinely need to make a petition for them to change the sounds to this. Phenomenal difference, actually ups the tension.

00:46 - By far the best scene in the movie, watching him pull up and seeing the Tomcat still sink until it powers itself forward is amazing.

The growl of the SW seeker makes the whole bit before Mav get off the first missile so much more awesome!

The compressor stall warning when he splits the throttle is pretty accurate. It is possible but it’s such a risky manoeuvre because of flat spins

You did a phenomenal job with the sound effects and using the proper ones, even changing how the cannon sounded if the shot in the movie was inside of the cockpit or outside. This significantly improved my enjoyment of the movie and I wish it would be re-released with your sound editing.

Fury might not have been the most historically convergent movie, but damn it had this high of a level for its sound design. I really set my expectations way too high for Maverick...

Now THAT would have made a BETTER movie... I "miss" the Bark of the M61 "Vulcan" Cannon as I happen just down the road from Hurlburt AFB and would listen to them on the AC-130H "Spectre" Gunships over the ranges at night. 20mm "JAZZ" Music at it's finest.

Excellent work on this video the sound effects for this dogfight we're pretty much my only complaint with the movie and you pretty much fix my complaints. I'm sure there's some real Aviation enthusiasts in the comments section who can take out even smaller details than I noticed as a casual fan of fighter jets but I really liked what you did here

Outstanding! The gatling gun sounds way more menacing and believable. Also, even though the F14 shouldn't detect the missiles, the panic and chaos inside the cabin build even further the tension of the scene. Nice job!

It does keep surprising me how they both absolutely destroy any speed they have, yet end up on the tail of the other aircraft with just as much speed.

Whoa THIS made a huge difference. The cockpit sounds are totally needed in the original. The gun sounds have so much more depth now, you can hear the power.

I'm not even particularly knowledgeable about military aviation but I'm pretty sure that this kind of close range engagement with modern fighters is pretty implausible. But those sounds do make this feel a bit more grounded in reality though.

Now we just need a version where terrain doesn’t confuse the targeting system of a 5th gen fighter

Man the gun sounds alone make this so much better. Also, I’d agree on your use of RWR. This is separate to actual radar and radio, and the idea of the F14 going low to confuse the sensors is referring to the use of ground clutter to throw off radar locks. Those SU57’s were originally flying high and probably loaded for BVR engagements to maintain a stand off distance in case anyone flew into the AO, hence the use of R77-1’s, and not Fox 2’s for dogfights. I wouldn’t load up an aircraft with Fox 2’s when my AO is jam packed with friendly SAM’s. I’m sure it’s easier to switch on the RWR in the F14 than the whole radar system (I’m guessing here as I know it’s easy in the F15, 16 & 18, but I’ve not looked at the F14’s system before) so your choice on adding RWR effects makes perfect sense. It’s also worth adding that the growling sidewinder tone is so much better than the lame beeping noise the movie insists on! Shame the F14’s hud symbology wasn’t quite right. I loved this movie, and this scene. Your additions really add to it, nice work!

Honestly the funny thing is is that the more realistic gun sounds and The Sidewinder growl sound way meaner and cinematic than the sounds they use.

This makes you appreciate the sound in movies even more, its often overlooked but sound can make such a difference. Sick edit man, amazing job!

So my only criticism would be that at this time, the radar in the Tomcat wasn’t turned on; Rooster hadn’t yet found the correct breaker, and so Mav and Rooster wouldn’t be hearing the audibles. Other than that, absolutely amazing job.
