Thanks for saying this. Hollywood is about drama, it's about excitement, it's about the 1% of the 1% of 1% of things that are possible. That's why procedural shows are for network television and blockbusters like Top Gun go on the big screen. Some of this stuff might be plausible, and could work under a specific set of circumstances. Is it likely? no. But if Hollywood made movies based on actual physics and laws of probability, movies like Top Gun wouldn't be anywhere near as entertaining. Also, protagonists wouldn't live anywhere near as long in the movies, and the movies would last about 15 minutes - basically 1 minute after all the characters are introduced.

yes it is, even in the Tomcat, it is stupidly dangerous though - flipping one side to idle would cause you to depart (and was shown to be contributory to Goose's death in the first movie), why he deliberately cut throttle on one side of his aircraft in this movie knowing what happened last time he applied asymmetric thrust in an F-14, is quite beyond me.

As would Maverick's dad who flew with Viper on the mission that he died. Not sure about Jester's military combat bio other than he'd risen to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was apparently Viper's 2IC at TopGun. Hangman has 2 confirmed kills (apparently) which actually puts him one more than Iceman who only got one in the 1986 dogfight.

he wouldn't have needed to split the throttle, if what I've heard is correct, doing something like that would put you in great jeopardy of compressor stall, which for obvious reasons would completely fuck you in a dogfight, but the split throttle thing is far from the most egregious thing in this movie, all the times mav went vertical he should have died, you don't go vertical against an SU-57 that can pull it's nose on you at any time it wants, one strafe would have ended it. And when the SU-57 did that flatspin maneuver, he should have been the easiest target to hit in the world, mav also just watched him go right past him like an idiot, he didn't try to maneuver pre-emptively or anything, he just flew in a straight line....same can be said about mav's cobra maneuver, he was blind for the few seconds his canopy was ontop of the 57, the 57 could have very easily broken off and Mav's radar would not have been able to pick him up and the 57 could have pulled ontop of him and killed him very easily. the director didn't put a whole lot of effort into making the fight remotely believable if fighter nerds can pick it apart so easily, if Mav is supposed to be this godly pilot, he makes a lot of dumb decisions, but the SU-57 is even dumber.

Well….. even though the wings fully swept mitigates drag, it can be used to decrease the amount of AoA pulled an medium speeds and therefore make the tomcat behave more calmly and more like an F-16 in which it trades AoA for Rate around times. The tomcat is still quite manoeuverable with the wings swept back, surprisingly.

You're right about the sound of the guns. I was enlisted in the Navy for 20 years and the last system I worked on was the Phalanx CIWS. We had the hydraulic system (USS Nimitz 1995 through 2000) and it only fired 3,000 RPM from the M61A1 gun and it didn't sound anything like that. The pneumatic systems installed on other ships fired 4,500 RPM and I heard the same gun on the F14 shot 6,000 RPM. I don't know what you hear inside the cockpit, but I do know that when we did a PAC fire (100 round burst x 2 from each mount) from the CIWS, it was loud. Too bad they didn't have a technical expert help them with the movie.

F-14's wings are usually controlled by the computer (based on the current altitude and the airspeed) automatically and it is already available since the F-14A. So when Maverick splits the throttle, it is possible that the computer decides the wing should probably stay swept back. Also, there is another possible explanation: Some experienced F-14 pilots would typically use ground-attack mode to lock the wing at 45 degrees during the BVM, to prevent leaking the current energy level to the opponent.
@sparrowlt

I sure as hell was NOT going to lose the first Eagle EVER in combat. You'd be shocked at how significant the effect is. The engine spacing on the 15 and 18 is probably why it takes such a large power split on those jets. The F-14’s widely spaced engines give it a lot more authority in that regard. You’d likely only need to take off one or two stages of burner on one side, and the put them right back quick, fast, and in a hurry to avoid going breakdancing right out of the sky.

@@jonnyj. Actually, he’s most likely right, for a couple reasons. First, the TF30 was a highly unreliable engine, and was highly sensitive to rapid throttle movements like you see Maverick make. He’d likely have coughed both engines instantly by smacking the throttles around like that. Secondly, the TF30 was highly intolerant of disturbed airflow due to high angles of attack and side slip, so again Mav likely would’ve coughed his engines. The Tomcat’s gigantic straight intakes were supposed to fix that, but they didn’t. However, assuming the engines survived Mav’s ham-fisted throttle movements, the engine in Zone 5 would’ve had a marginally better chance of staying lit than the idling engine, but that leads into point 3, which is that because of the very wide spacing of the engines, the huge thrust asymmetry caused by such a large throttle split would’ve put the Tomcat into an unrecoverable flat spin, possibly aggravated by one or two dead motors. I would think that the worst split you would dare in the Turkey would be Max AB/Mil power, for no more than a second.

@@ruiliu4157 that's the plot armour, they make enemy as incompetent but forgot about plot armor is still strong. Why the third SU-57 didn't detect hangman shooting missile at him? Why SU-57 friendly fire can beat another SU-57 but not F-14? What I will do is hangman came to fight SU-57 which is more realistic

@@boboboy8189 There are too many possibilities why the last Su-57 got splashed by Hangman. Most planes got shot down in battle without awareness at all, which is reality, not plot armor. Not sure why near-extinct Su-57 has so many diehard followers. I think the Su-57 has too much propaganda armor instead.

Mover, I don't know if you noticed, but when Mav splits the throttles the F-14 magically has ailerons, Plus when he fires both AIM-9s they drop from the rail first, instead of sliding off the rail.

I think the most wildly unrealistic thing about this movie is that the su57 pilot has training to fly it.

as far as how Rooster figured out how to use the flares on the F-14....i'm assuming that there would be a fairly significant amount of time between when they took off and when they were intercepted by the two Su-57's that they didnt show in the movie. only explanation i can think of is that during the period of time before they got intercepted, Rooster had some time to get at least somewhat familiar with things in the plane.

That Felon pulling Kvochur Bell sold me on the Felon. That wasn't flying, that was dancing in the air. Yeah not a dogfight maneuver. But still very cool to watch. Even Mav and Rooster agreed.

In my lifetime I've known 4 fighter pilots, none were brash or sent any signals that they were anyone special. Of all the people in Top Gun 2 that most resembled the guys I've known were Bob and Phoenix, all were incredibly dedicated highly skilled men, none bragged or set themselves apart. All of the four were exceedingly intelligent people. If anything my gut said that each them felt like there was more to know. Just like Mover and Gonky.
