I was a first grade teacher for two years, a fifth and sixth grade science teacher for a year, then a computer teacher for 14 (yes, 14) years. I left teaching for four years, then was hired during the pandemic to teach fifth and sixth grade reading and spelling. I got brave enough to ask the principal if I could be considered for a third grade position. Yes, after wanting a third grade position since 1996, I was finally offered my dream job. And I start my third year teaching third grade next year!!! ❤❤❤

The #1 reason to create a physical portfolio is to eliminate any barriers to the school hiring you. Being able to hand over your teaching certification, college transcripts, etc. will dramatically improve your chances since you have proof that you are certified to teach in that state or county. HR for large districts can be a huge hot mess. So if the administrator who you interview with has your physical paperwork, then they can absolutely advocate for you and fast track your hiring and onboarding with the district. Great video by the way! Excellent advice for everyone.

Hi there, I’ve just watched this and cannot say thank you enough! I’m a fifth year special education teacher, and there’s one thing I wished I’d known as a teacher when I started applying was to know what was the best fit for me, and not take the first one offered. I’ve made many mistakes, and I still have and have accepted a new position for next year, but I have to keep in mind to be more selective and more specific about what I’m looking for as a career path for me.

Awesome video Michelle! Your tips are always on point! I’m getting ready to share your video to my social media to get this in the hands of future teachers who are getting ready to apply for teaching jobs right now! Tip numbers 8-10 hit so close to home for me. I deal with this twice a year when I prepare students with mock interviews during a career boot camp. I’m probably going to get some flack for what I say next but I have to say it. I agree with you on the thank you notes 100%. You give a good first impression when you walk in and you leave a lasting impression with the thank you note or email. It’s a point I’ve tried to hammer home with my schools career center because the number of thank you notes or emails students write to the interviewers is very low. Reflecting on interviews is important to help you grow!

While this video may not apply to me personally as I have been teaching in the same district for the past 25 years, I think this is a wonderful tool for new teachers to use! In fact, I know several methods instructors and I am going to share this with them so they can share it with their students. I wish I had you when I was starting out. I have learned so much from you two decades into my career and you have helped me become a better teacher, that I can only imagine where I would be now if I had you as a resource in the beginning! Good luck at your meet this weekend and I will see you at your book launch next week! I CANNOT WAIT. Have a great week!

I had my very first teaching interview recently, it was only a short screening interview but I was so nervous! Instead of the typical panel of people from that school, it was a panel of like 5 principles from the district, it was so intimidating. But, I am thankful to have the first out of the way and am looking forward to future ones!

@@PocketfulofPrimary Thank you so much!!! I also did have a question regarding the whole idea about bringing the folders to the schools. What time would you recommend going? Schools are on high alert nowadays for obvious reasons so I wasn't sure if going during school hours would be the best, should I go like right after the kids leave maybe to drop it off?

Persuade your dream job. Don’t settle down! I have been teaching for fourteen years in two different districts. Next school year I will start teaching in an Spanish Immersion School. If I could have done things differently, I would probably apply for my dream job every year. But in reality I became too comfortable in my old school and never had the energy or time to apply until I didn’t really care for my new principal.

Florida has a shortage of teachers, so I took the FTCE examination to teach Social Studies (6th-12th). I have Substitute teaching and tutoring experience and an Accountant by trade. However, after dozens of applications, there are no bites. I am in my 60’s, but not sure if this is a deterrent. I keep striving though and understand. Maybe there’s a slew of completion or those better qualified. Perhaps, Not sure if you have any tips?

So, I have a question... I graduated last year with my Bachelor's in Elementary Education but decided to stay working at my church and be a preschool teacher (knowing that I didn't want to teach preschoolers; I was doing it because it's close to my house and I've already been there for 7 years). I was teaching on Tuesdays and Thursdays with 3 year olds who are at school Monday through Friday. The other teacher I was sharing the room with didn't have a teaching degree and had never worked in a school except for last school year (2021-2022) as an aide. She got her Master's in Early Childhood during the first semester of this school year. Over Christmas break, the preschool director (my boss) told me that I wasn't going to be teaching anymore because of my classroom management and some parents were concerned and had asked if I was even qualified to teach. My question is: given that I would have to put this on a resume, how badly would this reflect on me? Would schools not want me because I don't have good classroom management? Or would they be understanding in me having to learn? I want to try subbing this next school year in the school district I grew up in and I was told I need to work on my teacher voice/authoritative voice/firm voice but I'm really worried that I may not do well. I'm also really quiet and introverted and even student teaching was hard. I was with third grade and told that I needed to be louder.
@creativetempojournals
@creativetempojournals Жыл бұрын
Hi Katie, I can relate as I am a quiet person, too. I think you could definitely get a lot of experience from subbing and it would help your confidence. Another thought is have you considered applying for job like small group intervention (Title I/RTI)? That way you could build more confidence with managing a small group of students before you move on to a classroom. I was an aide for 6 years and I've been a Title I teacher for 4 years. Ive loved it and now I feel like I am ready to do more so I may have a classroom this year. Or you might find that you like the small group setting best. I don't think management will ever be easy but I am definitely more confident than I used to be. In an interview, my advice is to let them know you are always learning more about classroom management and are willing to learn and grow. Good luck! :)
@katieakin1091
@katieakin1091 Жыл бұрын
@@creativetempojournals thank you! If I decided to do Title I/RTI (we had to do RTI when we were student teaching but I had a hard time teaching the kids/managing one of the groups by keeping them focused), how would I apply for it?
@creativetempojournals
@creativetempojournals Жыл бұрын
Search for any jobs with Title I or RTI in the title...most school district websites have an employment section where you apply online. They will be listed along with the other teaching jobs, usually under the category "tutors" or "student support." Focus on engaging the kids with hands on activities to avoid behavior issues. Also, build a good relationship with the students and they will want to learn from you. :)
@PocketfulofPrimary
@PocketfulofPrimary Жыл бұрын
Hi Katie! I think you got some great advice from Creative Tempo! I would suggest also taking steps to show that you're building your skills with classroom management such as taking online courses, attending professional development workshops, reading books, etc. That way, if it comes up in an interview, you can advocate for yourself and say that you know classroom management is an area you need to grow in and you can outline the steps you're already taking. I agree that subbing will help you gain a lot of great experience and you'll grow quickly! I was also pretty quiet and introverted as a student teacher but gained a lot of confidence in my abilities in my own classroom... it's definitely a different feeling when the class is yours vs your mentor teacher's. I wish you the best of luck! 🥰🖤

So I went to a job fair at the end of March and the school had an open position that is exactly what I want. I love the school and really want the position. The dean of instruction told me to apply for the position even though I had not taken my content exam yet because they were going to schedule interviews within a few weeks of the fair and he said he wanted to make sure I didn't miss it by waiting until I took the test. I have now passed my exam and i reached out to them on how to update my application. I updated my application with all the information showing I am eligible to be hired. My application is active but no interview call yet. Do I wait it out or reach out to them again?
@PocketfulofPrimary
@PocketfulofPrimary Жыл бұрын
Hi Kayla! To answer your question, yes! I would definitely reach out again! The rule I usually live by is that it's okay to reach out again if it's been over a week since you've gotten any response. But, if you haven't been called yet for an interview after updating your application, you should definitely reach out because they might not be aware of the changes or have too many applications in the applicant pool to notice. Best of luck to you in the interview process!
