70,000 Miles in a Porsche 356: the Good, the Bad, the Ugly

In this episode I address SV Motorsport's 1958 Porsche 356 1600 Super for sale with 70,000 miles. No its not a Volkswagen Beatle! This car is an icon because it made one. The 356 is responsible for the timeless lines and pretty much everything else we experience when we see and drive a Porsche 911 today. It represents a starting point for Porsche and while we see companies hurrying for the next big thing Porsche has always been perfectly comfortable sticking with their roots in the form of evolution rather then revolution. The point of this series is show you what happens when you put more than a few miles on an exotic car cause lets be honest people don't drive these types of cars so no one knows what to expect when you actually own one!

It is more fun to drive a slow car fast than drive a fast car slow. I have about 200,000 miles on my 356. Most fun car I have ever driven.

I'm 6' 4" and there is no problem with fitting in a PORSCHE 356. I have driven 10 hour days w/o any issue, very comfortable and plenty of room. Also I just finished a 500 mile tour with 30 other 356 owners so don't say these cars are locked away in garages. Our So Cal Porsche 356 Club has many well attended driving events, very few trailer queens.

Well done Dylan, great summary of the 60hp model, John Abbott would be proud of how your father allowed you to grow up! And thank you for the video, brought back a lot of memories. Oh yes, probably the most iconic reference to the 911's past is the rev counter being centred on the dash!

People love to joke about the 356 or the 911 being a souped-up VW Beetle but the joke's really on them. Very few people are aware that the VW Beetle was completely designed from the ground up by Ferdinand Porsche himself. So technically it is a Porsche in itself.

First thing, if you are going to present yourself as being qualified to review this car then you need to learn how to pronounce Porsche. You got the primary problem with evaluating a used 356, rust. The second big problem is previous mechanics. More 356's die from ignorant repairs than any other cause. The only cure for this is to know what came with the cars originally. If somebody deviates from original then you need to know exactly how that will effect the car. One thing for sure, any deviations from original will drive the value down.
