Ethanol based fuels are common place in the automotive world and since ethanol is a renewable resource and a cleaner burning alternative to gasoline, ethanol, or mores specifically ethanol blends, have become a popular choice in many countries. Pure ethanol or E100 isn’t typically used as a fuel since its lack of volatility (compared to gasoline) can make it hard to start when the engine is cold. The most common blend we are used to is referred to as E85, consisting of 85% ethanol and 15% unleaded gasoline. It’s worth noting however that the actual ethanol content of E85 may fluctuate quite widely in pump E85 - For example it’s common to see ethanol content in a winter blend of E85 reduce to perhaps 60-70% to aid starting in very cold climates
While E85 is great for the environment, performance enthusiasts quickly found out it’s also great for producing power. So where does the advantage come from? On the face of it ethanol actually has a slightly lower energy content than gasoline per kilogram, but it also has a much richer stoichiometric AFR (9.8:1 for E85 vs 14.7:1 for pump gas) which means we need to use more of it to mix with the same mass of air. In general when switching to E85 we will find that we need to inject around 35-40% more fuel to make the same power we saw on pump gas. E85 also contains around 30% oxygen by weight and it has a higher effective octane rating than pump gas - This is often listed as 105, however we have seen E85 perform as well as specifically blended race fuels with motor octane ratings of 116+.
One of the key advantages of E85 over gasoline is that it has a higher latent heat of evaporation than pump gas. This means that it absorbs more heat from the combustion charge as it goes through a phase change from liquid to vapour. This draws heat out of the combustion charge and coupled with its high octane rating, makes the fuel very resistant to detonation. For those interested in performance, this means we can run more boost, more compression, more ignition advance, or all three with relative immunity from detonation. Note that contrary to popular belief, knock can still occur on E85, but it is much less likely.
We recently performed some testing on our Toyota 86 fitted with a Borg Warner EFR 6758 turbo and a MoTeC M150 ECU. In stock form the 12.5:1 compression engine was heavily knock limited on pump gas, producing 198 kW at the wheels with 7 psi boost - That’s still a decent increase from the 114 kW measured when standard though. With a tank of E85 on board, we were able to optimise the ignition advance at the same 7 psi, achieving 226 kW at the wheels. This gain was achieved because we could optimise the ignition timing without encountering knock. In the end the engine took an extra 6-8 degrees of ignition advance over what it accepted on pump gas.
Once we had achieved MBT timing (Find out in our EFI Tuning Fundamentals online course) at the minimum boost level of 7 psi, we used the MoTeC’s electronic boost control to raise the boost pressure. With an extra 2.5 psi boost (9.5 psi peak), the engine produced 266 kW at the wheels and the ignition timing could still be advanced to MBT with no sign of detonation. Note that the stock FA20 engine runs a very high 12.5:1 compression, making it a challenging task to tune when coupled with a turbocharger. Obviously we could have pushed the boost further but we would like the stock FA20 to hold together for a little longer right now.
So E85 allows a degree of immunity from knock which obviously lends itself nicely to high boost turbo engines or high compression N/A engines. What happens if your engine is naturally aspirated and isn’t knock limited though? We have found that even in these situations you can still expect to see an additional 5% more power, making the switch to E85 a worthwhile consideration. The only downside is that you will be burning more fuel and hence your fuel economy takes a hit. On top of that you may need to rethink your fuel system with larger injectors and fuel pumps often an essential aspect of any upgrade to E85.

Cool content !! Here in Brazil E100 is totally usual .. we are even used to calculate if it worths more going over Gasoline or Ethanol once filling up the tank ... Almost all cars have the ability to accept both fuels .. we call them flex fuel .. but some new models are going to be only Ethanol again to increase its fuel economy ..

Agreed, This was some great data and method illustrating many of the important factors. I self tune my own turbo car on street with a knock limited Subaru and have started working on an E85 tune. It was nice to see see data to back up my results that E85 likes a little bit less timing at lower loads which I presume is allowing for a bit more heat in the combustion to reach max VE. @hpa101
@hpa101 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. We just chose two points to highlight the differences in knock limited an non-knock limited operation. When we actually perform a complete tune we want to optimise each ignition cell to achieve MBT. We don't however use the Torque Optimisation test in every cell as this would be too time consuming. During normal tuning we are just using the torque feedback on the dyno to find MBT.

Best explanation on how to tune timing. Just one question as I don't understand English perfectly. Do you use speed limiter or just try to maintain the accelerator as smooth as possible when you're tuning?
@hpa101
@hpa101 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! So in this example the dyno we use limits the RPM to whatever we set it to. You only use that function in the low to mid rev range, and then you start doing sweeping runs through the high RPM range as it wouldn't be good for the car to sit there on the limiter while tuning haha. To simulate this on the road, you use left foot braking to hold the RPM instead. it is called 'steady state' tuning if you want to look into it a little more. Hope that helps - Taz.
@imestia7911

@@hpa101 I understand perfectly ty so much and I have a dumb question because if it was that I guess you would have told me. Using speed limiter can't work right?
@hpa101
@hpa101 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried that but generally a speed limiter has the RPM fluctuating, and since we what to hold the RPM rather than speed, I'm not sure it would really be better than simply left foot braking to be honest: www.hpacademy.com/previous-webinars/the-key-to-road-tuning-left-foot-braking/? And no worries at all, one comment we get from many podcast guests is that they wish they asked more questions from earlier in their careers, so never be afraid to ask questions even if you think they are stupid as realistically even if they are what is the worst that happens? 😎 - Taz. www.hpa-tunedin.com

What was the octane number of the fuels tested? Or it's comparing apples to oranges? I would expect the same ignition timing at full throttle for the same octane number. Apparently the E85 octane was 2 points higher which resulted in 3 degrees difference
@RC300200
@RC300200 5 жыл бұрын
Well, at low throttle, there's roughly 3° gap b/w E85 and gasoline (30° vs 33°). At mid throttle, 6° gap b/w E85 and gasoline (25° vs. 19°) with the side effect of being knock limited on gasoline. It seems your bench is a Toyota 86 / 4U-GSE engine / direct injection. How these gaps would be on a V6 engine with indirect injection ? Can these gaps increase or decrease according to the engine configuration !?
@hpa101
@hpa101 5 жыл бұрын
Correct, those gaps mean nothing and will vary wildly across different engines and setups. This is why we have to tune and why we can't just work out what the engine wants based off another engine, or even an engine that is the same. It's simply not possible to do with any kind of reliability - Taz.

Hi Mohamed, that is a tough question to answer. the EFI Tuning Fundamental course teaches the fundamentals. For some this is enough information to start tuning, it also helps when you do other research online to sort the fact from fiction. For others more information is required, for those people we have more in-depth courses that teach a step by step process for tuning, which is a great guide to use. Either way the EFI Tuning Fundamentals course is the best place to START learning how to tune. The one thing to remember about tuning is your learning is never finished. I am a bit confused perhaps someone can clear this up: You needed LESS ignition timing during vacuum to achieve mbt with ethanol but use more ignition timing during boost? should I be lowering ignition timing during closed loop operation for best efficiency? I already have open looped tuned well with more timing compared to gasoline. It almost seems reversed between closed and open loop operation.
@ivansmith4616
@ivansmith4616 5 жыл бұрын
During vacuum you are not knock limited with pump gas so you go with the timing that makes MBT for the fuel you are using which for E85 is less than pump gas. For the engine they tested it knocks before it gets to MBT on pump gas under boost. With E85 it is less prone to cause knock so you can continue to add timing until you get to MBT.

@@hpa101 Thanks. In Ireland here so it's not something I have come across before. Just installed a rolling road for some hobby tuning of my own cars. Will get signed up to some of your courses soon. Thanks again

For full throttle tuning with a carburetor get your fuel mixture optimized than use acceleration tests to find the timing that gives you the quickest acceleration. Advance your timing 1 degree at a time until you detect knock or your times get slower. For the timing curve it will depend on your engine combo. You can change that with different weights, springs, and stops in your distributor. Then you will want to tune your vacuum advance.

Can a car run on 100% ethanol safely as a daily.
@KolorowaSowa
@KolorowaSowa 5 жыл бұрын
Yes it can. In fact in some countries (I think in Portugal, but I'm not sure) it's used as a main fuel. The problem with running on pure ethanol is that you can't start a car when it's cold, so it works only in warm climates. Even in countries where it's used as a main fuel, cars usualy have small reservoir for petrol used only for starting a car in cold weather.

In Brazil is very common since 70's. Recently the cars started to use the heated injectors technology, so, there's no more need the gasoline reservatoir.

Can i simply increase timing in my load threshold during WOT say i have a minimum of 1.3 load at WOT and a max of 2.4 at WOT , can i up the timing from 3000rpm to redline between 1 3 and 2.4 of load until it knock and back it off and just leave the rest of the table the way it was and have only changed it wher it sits at wide open?

your courses are of very high quality but they are very expensive ;(
@hpa101
@hpa101 Жыл бұрын
What specific courses are you looking at? We firmly believe they are the cheapest part of learning how to tune, but you can always email with your learning goals or specific courses you are interested in and see if we have an active coupon going to help you out. If you're new to tuning I promise you that you won't regret it. It's easier to put value on buying a big new shiny turbo vs knowledge, but the knowledge will last you a lot longer and be more useful ;) Most people spend way more on phones and beer alone in a year than they do on their own learning 😅 - Taz. support@hpacademy.com

@@hpa101 hi, thanks for the honest reply, I bet they are valuable for tuning but I'm not certain if I'm gonna get in tuning at all. I don't say that they are overpriced, I respect your work, but it's way too much for me for now. the starter tuning package is $417, which is almost half my monthly wage. I'm an engineer in some country. I guess I'll just start from the free lessons and see where it goes!

@@klazzera you have a 60-day refund policy option because we know what that is like too, the uncertainty and 'analysis paralysis'. Forget about the package deal and it's bigger price tag for now, start with a single course, make it this one: EFI Tuning Fundamentals: www.hpacademy.com/courses/efi-tuning-fundamentals/?hpa-acc=HELPDESK50 If you want to upgrade to the package deal in the future we can credit what you paid for this against it, if not, that's cool, and if you decide there is no value in this course or tuning isn't for you within 60 days, boom, refund. We honestly don't mind you buying and refunding if you change you mind, that's why we offer the option, so don't be afraid to commit a little and find out for sure 😎- Taz. support@hpacademy.com
