IKEA HACK - Here is my long awaited & highly requested DIY Kitchen Island Breakfast Bar video. I explain what to buy, how to build it & give you a tour of what i store in mine. It's so simple to do & you can make it in all shapes & sizes dependant on your space.

We are creating our island on Saturday, and we've purchased the longer Kallax with drawer and door inserts, and the lockable wheels so we can move it. I like the idea of the capita legs under the worktop. My husband tends to use his laptop in the kitchen during the evening and it would be nice to be able to keep it under there, instead of having to go up stairs every time he needs it.

Donna, I have long admired that breakfast bar, and eventually I would love the same, I was also thinking I do a lot of craft both on my own and with my boys, was thinking of the same idea but in our living area as a craft table and whats lovely is all the craft supplies could go underneath, but I think I'd like one in the kitchen too.

+TheMcDonaghFamily The great thing about it is that you can tailor make it to what you need. Say just one Kallax at £20, which would be slim enough to take an off cut of standard worktop, some wheels & feet to raise the worktop for additional storage underneath(lay flat space for paintings to dry!) & those £2.50 boxes to hold all your crafting stuff & voila. Amelia keeps her massive loom supply under ours :) Out kitchen one is a god send as we could never find a table that fit the space well & the small kitchen was over cluttered with wall units. 2 problems solved.

Love this idea. I've been using your video as an example and over 1 year ago I built one. Not exactly as this one but very similar using ikea parts plus counter. We are absolutely delighted when eating by myself always at it and my kids do not use table unless we have family dinner. This video is amazing. Thank you so much

What a great idea. I think I will be keeping this in mind we move house soon and we have a glass table at the mo which I am getting rid of. This would be a great idea to replace. Thanks ☺

I found your videos a couple of weeks ago and admired that breakfast bar! Our kitchen is exactly the same layout just back to front (our kitchen is to the left as you go in the door and the dining area is to the right, same pantry under the stairs and everything!), I was wondering what I could do to add a breakfast bar in the space instead of a dining table! Very very smart, thank you for sharing!

+Hailey Matthew Thanks Hailey, i just love it! Is yours Barratt? They are such a strange layout aren't they. If the door had been a feet or 2 to the right(or the whole kitchen 2 feet bigger) we wouldn't of struggled to find a table for the space. Happy that it forced me to think outside the box & design this though :) I hope you give it a go & would love to see pics if you do. X

I think it is, where we are they're all the same! We only moved in December, our friends have a round table with chairs that fit underneath completely but we're working will a full dining table at the moment and we use the pantry for food so it's a nightmare! I think this'll be my next project, I'm currently covering the cupboards with contact paper because we are renting, I wanted to pull the kitchen out ;)

+Hailey Matthew We had a square table with rounded corners that had strangely shaped chairs that fit snug to the table but they were so uncomfortable. You can probably see that table in my DITL video(the good the bad & the ugly i think its called) Contact paper is great to transform things & it's amazing what just a new worktop can do also.

What a great idea,was thinking of buying an island from IKEA but this is even better.Was the top from IKEA also?We have an IKEA opened in Canberra a few months back which is around 2 1/2 hours from us.Have just subscribed.xx.

Ours is taller but if you left out those little corner risers that we used it would be worktop height 😀

+Claire Turnbull Absolutely Claire. I'm designing a 1 kallax(the 4 cube shelving unit) breakfast bar for my Daughters new house. I'll do a video on that too. We were going to do 2 kallax side by side at first but it stuck out into the kitchen area too far so decided to do 2 back to back. If you had a huge space 4 in a cube shape would be awesome! Just take the measurements off ikea & use some masking tape to mark out the area in your space(what we did) so you can see if it will fit. Don't forget to allow for chairs.

U have totally got me in this, want to try something unique , I need to browse ikea , even though I don't have it locally to me, I'm deffo going to try be more creative, coz I'm doing my living room up and just need a couple of finishing touches, x

+Gina Gregg I need to update info box below video with all info & links but a quick tot up £170 & thats counting the £50 we paid for that usually very expensive slab of gemstone for the top. Ebay is great for off cuts of worktops. I priced up kitchen islands online first & most where £1000+ for something of that size! :O Thanks we love it! X

great idea..but the video focuses too much on what you have in your cupboards and on the table instead of showing how you actually put it together step-by step

Hardly rocket science really. As i say in the video, just glue the 2 units together, attach castors & slide in any drawers/cupboards/boxes. It really couldn't be any simpler. I never claimed it was a step by step video.

Donna Dyble i didnt say its rocket science, but you cant assume that its easy for your audience...some might have never put any furniture together...regardless my point was that your video bored me with this extra footage of your deco, I wanted to see how its done, not how you decorate it, this is supposed to be a DIY video, not a "how to decorate"

ikea gives instructions on how to put together - if you are bored - watch another video - its not that hard - very clear as far as I can tell - negative people uuuggghhhhhhh!!!
