Teardown: What's inside Ikea's TRADFRI smart LED bulb

A new LED bulb from the furniture maker Ikea of Sweden comes with its own remote controller which mounts to the wall and uses Bluetooth to switch the bulb on and off, adjust bulb color temperature and dimming level. One interesting point about the bulb: It uses two separate strings of LEDs, apparently as a way to more easily implement dimming and color changes. That introduces some complexity into the design that we discovered as we analyzed the bulb.

Hi!.. Its not using bluetooth. It uses Zigbee. (like Philips Hue). Other than that, great video!

Surprised a “EE” magazine made such a huge mistake mistakenly saying this bulb uses Bluetooth rather Zigbee.

Why are you guys stating it is bluetooth? Everywhere else I have read that it is zigbee. You sound like you know what you are talking about, so did ikea change their design recently?

I liked the video, but you should at least edit the description to mention the ZigBee 3.0 protocol and the fact that there is now a bridge to connect the bulbs to apps, home kit alexa etc...

Guess it´s ERF32 is Bluetooth AND 802.15.4 / ZigBee

Soooo... When you sum all the energy reqs (including battery and such), does it drain more or less power than normal (edison) light bulbs (I'm sorry, heating devices)?

This video is overly technical (boring even for technically inclined) and yet surprisingly full of obvious inaccuracies that even a HomeAutomation novice could recognize. Suggesting the bulb/remote tech was using Bluetooth and claiming there was no smartapp are two of the most obvious mistakes that should have been caught by an expert or a by an intern who knows how to use google. Nice effort otherwise. I'm sure there's a place for Uber technical talking head videos. Just get the details right next time and you're good.

Bluetooth? Really? Guys it’s zigbee! Bluetooth also has a much shorter range than ZigBee.

Very informative video but the questions seem like a time filler, not much for to it. Could we much better if it was just a flow of descriptions.

I don’t know .. but .. there’s quite a lot ”off” in this video ... you guys are insanely anti-climactic, and somewhat unorofessional : Couldn’t find pf correction specs ... it’s 12$ for a meter that does exactly that you know ..

The biggest "off" is that they're calling it Bluetooth when it's clearly Zigbee... There is NO bluetooth in any current Zigbee device like Hue, Tradfri or Osram bulbs.
