Welcome to an Ikoria Draft Guide! In this Ikoria Draft Guide I discuss the Top 3 Commons for each color, I rank each Color based on its power level, I sort the color pair Archetypes from best to worst, I go over all the relevant Combat Tricks at the Common and Uncommon rarities, and finally I discuss some cards that are Traps and some good Combos to know about in Ikoria! If you are trying to get ready for your Prerelease or your first Draft of Ikoria, this Draft Guide has all the information you need to crush your competition! Remember to like, share, and subscribe to support the channel! Feel free to discuss any element of the guide in the comments and I will gladly respond with my thoughts or answers!
GUIDE UPDATES:
0:37 Top White Commons. Snare Tactician is #1 because Cycling is super powerful. Drannith Healer takes the #2 slot as a nice early play that also has excellent cycling synergy. Pacifism moves down to #3 because you still need some removal.
1:15 Top Blue Commons. The #2 and #3 Blue Commons are probably just Startling Development or Frostveil Ambush because they can then be played in Red White Cycling, but for a cards that actually goes in a Blue deck, Dreamtail Heron is #2 and Of One Mind is #3.
2:00 Top Black Commons. Bushmeat Poacher is #2 because Sacrifice synergies are well supported in this set. Durable Coilbug is #3 because of the aforementioned Sacrifice synergies and because it is a good Mutate target.
2:40 Top Red Commons. Drannith Stinger replaces Rumbling Rockslide at #2 because Cycling is so strong in the set. Prickly Marmoset remains at #3.
3:49 Top Green Commons. Migratory Greathorn is #1 because the Ramp and Fixing it provides is invaluable for Green strategies. Honey Mammoth is #2 because the lifegain and big body are just what Green needs to close games. Greater Sandwurm is #3 because it is another great finisher and can even be Cycled early.
4:49 Color Rankings. The revised ranking (from best to worst) is Red then White then Black then Blue then Green. The Cycling cards were all a bit better than expected which bumps up Red and White, Blue is not as deep as some of the other colors which is why it falls in the ranking, and Black has a bit more synergy and its cards line up well, which is why it climbs. Green is the worst color, but it is still fine to play and the disparity is not massive.
5:56 Archetypes. There should be an "Unreal Good" tier just for Red White because RW Cycling is the best deck in the format and it is not particularly close. WB and RB are Top Tier. UG, UR, GW, and GB are Mid Tier. UB, RG, and UW are in the Low Tier. Drafting what is open is still more important than the Tiers though, and all the archetypes are viable when you get the right cards.
17:44 Traps. Whisper Squad is not a trap, the card is actually solid. Even if you can only get 2 copies of the card it provides you with good synergies for your Sacrifice decks and can sometimes even provide some Human synergy as well. Getting more than 2 copies makes it even better.
19:46 Combos. The best combo in the set at Common and Uncommon is Porcuparrot + Boot Nipper (or another Deathtouch enabler like Grimdancer). When you Mutate Porcuparrot onto a Deathtouch Boot Nipper, all of the pings now have Deathtouch so they will kill any creature, regardless of size. Another great combo is Titanoth Rex or Void Beckoner + Unbreakable Bond or Back For More. With this combo you cycle a massive creature into your Graveyard, and then bring it back with a Reanimation spell way before you would have been able to cast it normally.

THANK YOU. This vid is so much more useful than the "best pack 1, pick 1" type articles. You only a few chances at bomb rares, most of your draft is this here. What commons can fill out your deck? Which color archtypes to look out for. These are the topics that are so much more relevant to the actual experience of drafting. Bombs are fun n' all but most anyone can figure out big splashy rares. This is the hard stuff right here.

Great content! Really liking the look of this format. Lots of creature based interaction but still room for plenty of pushed instants to balance it all out. Plus RW actually looks like an archetype I actively want to play, which is pretty rare. Any tips for a long-time limited player who's never played with cycling before? I would have imagined that it leads to a slower format, but at the same time contesting the board early seems important with mutate around.

Hey, I can see you value cycling quite highly and rightly so but I've come across too many players who don't find a payoff for cycling and spend almost the entire game digging and just play the occasional creature. It's a free win much of the time. I also wanted to mention how I think Green and black is very strong in the set and here's why; ikoria is full of big creatures with easy ways to dump them into your grave (8/8 deathtouch in black and a 7/7 in green with cycling at common for example) for value early on and plenty of easy ways to grab stuff from your grave at common level, combine that with mutate synergies premium removal and fixing you mentioned in the video you have a powerful deck without any rares
@NicolaiBolas
@NicolaiBolas 4 жыл бұрын
Cycling is good even without a payoff because in the lategame you are willing to play things like a 6 mana 3/6 just as a creature because early on you can just get rid of it. In the late game you tend to cycle a lot less without dedicated payoffs. I think Green and Black can be good, but the recursion and best big creatures are mostly focused at Uncommon which makes it a bit less reliable. Also, many of the best Black cards are quite splashable so you don't have to fully commit to Green Black.

I disagree with your UR and WR in top tier due to cycling. Cycling does not affect the board state and does not get you out of pockets of land, which cannot be cycled. You will likely have to go 15-16 lands and find it difficult to play more expensive spells on curve. W seems very weak to me except for splashing for pacifism and divine arrow. UR noncreature is much more unpredictable; in a bot draft, I can see it failing to come together like UR in Theros hardly did for lack of uncommons, but you may get rewarded in human drafts. However, I would be cautious about having it as top tier. Green I like for enabling splashy 4 colour builds.
@NicolaiBolas
@NicolaiBolas 4 жыл бұрын
You do not need to activate it all that many times for the tapping to be relevant. I also do not think you need to play 15-16 lands because expensive Cyclers can help you have things to do when you find lands. I think Cathartic Reunion could be a great card in the UR spells deck for mitigating land heavy draws, and Fire Prophecy also does that well. Overall I think UR is going to be a good cards deck with spells synergy in the background because Blue and Red just have great spells. I'm not sure why I seem to be the only one who likes a lot of White's commons, but I definitely do not think you are alone in thinking it is the worst. Personally I think a lot of the cards look quite good even 5 or 6 commons deep.
@ToonLinksDair
@ToonLinksDair 4 жыл бұрын
@@NicolaiBolas Good points about Fire Prophecy and Cathartic Reunion discarding lands. Savai Thundermane is also a fine payoff for RW, esp if nobody else likes W. However, I am rating Cathartic Reunion very low in a vacuum as it's so much worse than Thrill of Possibility in an opening hand if you have two lands. Having to discard 2, one of them a potentially good spell, to draw 2 lands and a worse spell (as one possibility), seems very bad to me, as well as it not being an instant.
@NicolaiBolas

#IkoriaNOTReady lol I'm still new to this game and only been super casual about it until about 3 weeks ago. Now I'm watching videos and trying to learn how best to play. Kinda wish there was a resource out there that would help look at my collection of cards and help me build the best couple of decks possible. I've spent the last week trying to work with the Ikoria cards and put together what I thought was a nice deck, though I know it needs work. Then I watch this video and come to find out my noobish blue/black deck is not considered very good. See, I need help. But great video, despite not understanding some of the terms you used like "splashing", but I suppose in a few years I'll be decent at this lol.

Don’t worry friend your blue-black might still be good in constructed! Magic has a bunch of different formats. There are a bunch of different formats each with their own rules. This video is about Ikoria draft and the cards and deck he says are good are only relevant in this format. In this format you build a deck on the fly by opening a booster pack, picking a card from among it and passing the rest to the an opponent. You repeat this with 3 packs.

About Rumbling Rockslide: there aren't any 5/5s for 5. The exceptions including a Majestic Auricorn mutated onto a Mysterious Egg and such, but the 6/6s for 5 die to it if you hit your 6th land drop on the playThe reason you dislike Blade Banish and the reason you think Gloom Pangolin won't stay a good blocker conflict with each other.
@NicolaiBolas
@NicolaiBolas 4 жыл бұрын
I was mostly just trying to show how Rumbling Rockslide scales with the game. In regards to the conflicting reasons, that is actually a very interesting point. One thing about cards like Blade Banish is that if you are an assertive deck you kind of need all your cards to do things in the early to middle stages of the game, and Blade Banish is super unreliable in that role. Once your opponent has a big creature in play to target it is still a 4 mana removal spell, which isn't even a great deal. Having removal that you can only use in the later stages of the game is fine (similar to 6 mana removal spells), but its unreliability is a big reason why I'd rather sideboard it. With regards to the Gloom Pangolin, I'm just unsure where I'd want to play this card. It is bad if I'm trying to beat down, not great in a Mutate deck because it gets no benefit from being mutated onto, has a lot of toughness but is still unable to do more than slow down a couple of 2/2s attacking you. Also, Gloom Pangolin thrives when it can semi-blank cards, and Mutate means that your opponent's 3/1 that was blanked by the 1/5 has the potential to gain flying or grow or all sorts of things. I guess I just was trying to convey that I think Gloom Pangolin is going to be a bad card.
@lennartvandereijk6126
@lennartvandereijk6126 4 жыл бұрын
@@NicolaiBolas Thank you for clarifying. For some reason I still don't feel Gloom Pangolin is a trap, though I understand it is not a good card. If I am lacking three drops in a menace deck I think I would put in Gloom Pangolin to be the one creature to prevent losing the race on the crack-back, but it is a 23rd card inclusion in practically all cases where I would play it.

It may just one of those anomalies where because GB are considered the weakest, people are trying to force other stuff too hard, meaning that I end up getting the best BG(X) cards while everyone else is fighting to get what they can in Jeskai

@@masterloard I think the Sultai colors are actually quite good and I've played a few decks that end up there. It's definitely something I'll keep my eye out for because I could definitely be wrong in my initial evaluation.

@@NicolaiBolas yee! Also, in general, I feel like this set is SUPER "Bomb-y". Like, I'm no pro, but in this set especially, it feels like building around your bombs is just kinda... the way to go. Like, I have had decent success drafting 3 colors and splashing a 4th for some bombs (I drafted Jund, but splashed white for death's oasis, because Death's oasis is basically reverse cascade)

@@masterloard There are definitely some potent bombs, but I think Essence Scatter and strong removal at common definitely helps against them. Things like Quartzwood Crasher do feel unfair at times though.

Biggest trap I often see people fall into drafting this set is that they force their drafting around a companion creature, effectively butchering their own options to get a decent deck. Every time I see someone have a deck with a companion creature.. It's just horrible. Not because of the companion creature itself but because they have limited themselves even further in an already limited environment.
@NicolaiBolas
@NicolaiBolas 4 жыл бұрын
I think some of the companions definitely aren't worth it. However, I think it is reasonable to meet the conditions for some of them (Lutri immediately comes to mind) and it is quite powerful to start with an extra card.

Man, did this guide not age well. Hearing the part about Mystic Subdual is either a big oops moment or is a harbinger of things to come. I disagree with much especially the rankings of the common cards and colors, but I have the knowledge of drafting the set 6 weeks since the release where the video was made prior to the set release. Perhaps another video could be made later (maybe within a month after a set is released) to walkback the hot takes and reassess things.

I agree that certain elements did not age well (cough, Whisper Squad). The difficulty is that once the set has been out for a bit, people lack interest in a Draft guide. I made a revised Draft guide for Theros Beyond Death and I was pretty happy with the revisions there, but I was not sure it was worth it to do one for Ikoria. Maybe next set I'll do another Guide 2.0. I do appreciate the feedback.

What does it mean to splash?
@justinleandoer6821
@justinleandoer6821 3 жыл бұрын
splashing means adding a one or two of a color thats outside your 2 main colors. example splashing 1 red card in your green blue deck, you do this if your red card is particularly powerful but is outside your main pair
