In this video I test the Tandorio NH34 GMT in Herman, my water pressure tester. It is rated as 200m WR but I am going to test it down to 60m...Will it pass or fail?!?

I typically take for granted that most inexpensive dive watches are not truly 200m rated, but it is put on the dial more as a marketing piece. None the less, it would still be more than sufficient for the 99.9% of us that will never wear these watches in anything more than the shower or pool while on holiday. So as long as you make sure the crown is solidly screwed down you shouldn't have many problems, enjoy wearing it and go make some fun memories with your watch.

I take the WR with a grain of salt on affordable watches.I have a Tandorio Pilot and the nh35 inside is about +5 a day.I liken it to”The reasonably priced car”,which the speedometer says 130mph but won’t break 100 on most.👍🏻🍀

At one time I was a certified diver but I no longer dive. My only concern now is that I can swim with a watch or wash it under running water without damaging the watch. So far all of my AliExpress watches that I have used that way have had no problems so I am happy with them.

An excellent job educating the watch community, very much appreciated. Now we know more about: questionable depth ratings > if you buy an inexpensive watch, don't swim with it on (I would never swim with any watch on, what's the point of risking a leak?). That inexpensive watch depth ratings are questionable. And how watches can be tested. Many thanks !

This is the best thriller/action film I could hope for today! Thanks, Gary, and kudus to the neglected Herman. I expected this result, but not the cause. Like yourself, I assumed the glass would shutter at 5 bar or so, as did the Pagani once before, at 3 bar. I guess Tandorio didn't want to waste money on manufacturing two separate dials, one for the stainless-steel case-back (200m), and one for the mineral crystal one (30m?...).

Excellent test Gary. I was a little suspicious to see 200m on a watch with a glass caseback. Maybe the seam between the metal and glass did it.. I do dive regularly and have used a Steeldive Tuna and a Heimdallr Monster and both were ok. That was good advice to users of this particular watch. Don't be too confident of its performance in water.

Well many Chinese watch manufacturers just put "something" on their dials, like "Automatic" which is undeniable and "200 m WR" which is expected on this kind of watch, but 99% of all customers are never going to test properly. Probably this watch can even handle swimming and shallow diving, so mostly they get away with it. I've been missing Herman! 😄

Just bought a Tandorio (50 fm homage) with PT5000 movement; which I think will look very nice with a NATO strap. For under US$100 (delivered), seems hard to beat Tandorio value for money. Still just consider that the deepest part of the Chesapeake Bay (where I live) is only 174ft (53 meters) and then only in one point the 'hole', average depth is 7m ... so 60m WR isn't bad. But I agree misleading WR - i don't think I would buy any Aliexpress (or most watch brands) for diving that aren't ISO certified. I do sometimes think that we as watch enthusiasts over emphasize the importance of the numbers (just like specs of the watch) without knowing what they mean in real life situations (i.e. how deep do normal/ average scuba divers go?). If we did know what the numbers realistically mean then maybe the WR numbers would be lower and more realistic and we would be ok with them.

@destrygriffith3972
@destrygriffith3972 Жыл бұрын
I suspect the Victa, being a major brand, actually tested their design and it doesn't *tend* to leak (let alone implode) till at least 400m. If you take it apart and take a look, I'm sure you'll likely see the crystal back is two or more millimeters thick: plenty. Jodi on Just One More Watch was only able to shatter the most paper-thin display-back crystal because it was like .5mil thick. Fun fact: I used to have a Citizen Ecozilla that I'm pretty sure would take the full 3k compression they do on Hydraulic Press Channel. It only claims 300 but LOOKS like the same design as their 1000m Autozilla, which times the usual 3x resilience beyond rating they seem to get on the channel tells me the damn thing could probably go to three kilometers and come back up no worse for the wear except for a dented caseback!

Re your first pressure test, always seen watch folks release the pressure all at once, not slowly. Just a thought: With these inexpensive watches, I'd suspect that any WR failures were more likely because of fast, slightly sloppy construction than any failure of the parts. First thing I would try is to remove the back, thoroughly grease the gasket, and re-assemble. If I was really ambitious, I'd do the same to the crystal gasket. Same thing if there's a gasket on the back glass. I don't think the mineral glass back window would have any effect on WR until you got to depths (like 300 meters) where the glass might physically fail due to overpressure.

Gary, Thankyou! You have just shown what liars the makers of this watch are. Your pressure tester tests the crystals to 60M, can you imagine what could happen at 200M?? I would have at a guess to say either a major leak or the mineral crystal shattering. I was already going off the cheap chinese homages. Now I feel you should test all watches against their claimed water resistance. You truly exposed Tandorio for its false claims today.

@destrygriffith3972
@destrygriffith3972 Жыл бұрын
Totes. *Might* make it up 200m exactly without implosion, but no safety margin beyond that like we seem to see from other brands on the Hydraulic Press Channel. Got a Deep Blue claims 300 with a display back I finally thought to be sus about, but that crystal is thic, so I bet it would actually take the typical 3x to blast it - friggin' kilometer! One thing took me forever to see tho is that the crystal is beveled and seated in the caseback in such as way that the optics refract and make it appear that there is no metal for it to push on as it compressed by water and forced inward. I had to take off the caseback and really look closely: there *is* a tiny ring/shelf of metal there that the crystal seats onto - the clever beveling just makes it so you can't see it from outside the watch. I suspect it would hold fine because crystals are so much stiffer than metals, as we see on HPC when even the cheapest models seem to well bend the casebacks on their way down to shattered faces.

I don't mind 'em on dress watches with WR ratings of 30m or so, as they shouldn't be exposed to more water than one would get on them when washing one's hands (especially when paired with a leather band). On a real diver, solid caseback is the way to go...and if we're honest, while the movements most often found in these cheap Chinese watches might be workhorses, they're not exactly much to look at.

This watch, even with the see-thru back, would not have had any issues used for merely swimming, probably even snorkeling. With the solid case-back, who knows what it is capable of? Once you wake up from the fantasy of getting more than you pay for and remember who you're dealing with, it's actually honestly impressive how much you do get for the cash these days: legit certified Helms, Deep Blues that actually seem fit for use in the deep blue, Cronoses you literally can't compress even with a hydraulic press, San Martins with finishing as good or better than Seikos or Citizens. SM in particular I can't wait to pick out my first of and confidently showboat around the pool...

I've personnally tested the Tandorio 62Mas and several SKX homages in the swimming pool at 5 meters depth, without any issue. That beeing said, i wouldn't trust a sub $100 Ali's watch for diving. Instead, i would use an Heimdallr, Steeldive, or Addiesdive. And even Seastern and Sugess, because surprinsingly they are ISO 6425 compliant. Why don't you test these brands instead?...maybe shouldn't we forget that once upon a time, Swiss watches were considered the laughing stock, trying to copy french, english, and american watches. Noone laugh anymore now : )

Chinese companies should stop lying about their product (and most of them do it), but on the other hand we should also recognize that this is the nature of buying from China. Absurdly inflated product claims seem to be the norm. I've seen them claim 10k mah from an 18650 battery that when tested only had 600-800. But we all knew it was probably well under 1000 going in. It's like an abusive relationship that both parties have gotten way too comfortable with.

Unless that 200M is certified it's just a claim, but since very few of us will ever expose our watches to anything near that kind of pressure I'd say it's safe for everyday use. But I still won't go out on a limb and bash all Chinese watches because this one failed, this is a company specific issue.

I see you named Herman after Herman Munster, which is also a kind of cheese, which is made by expelling moisture from curdled milk under pressure? Makes sense.

I think the quality of these Chinese watches forces this kind of scrutiny, but I don’t think anyone is surprised at this result. Do we like them any less though? That’s my dilemma. These “homage” errr replica watches.

If you were to dive to 200m then why would you purchase a cheap Chinese watch? Surely this test is irrelavent.

Laughing….how many of you have dove past 10 meters? I venture to guess the average bloke has never swam deeper than 60 ft because after that you need scuba gear,(unless you are a trained skin diver.) the number of people who scuba dive is less than a percentage of the population and they aren’t wearing a dive watch to measure oxygen stores, they are using a dive computer. Can I wear it swimming? That’s all I really want to know.

I never trust ANY Chinese specification. Knives are NEVER the quoted steel. Batteries are NEVER the quoted capacity. Watches NEVER meet the depth rating. If you want a cheap dive watch get a Casio 👍 PS : Because of the unique case design, 200m Vostok Amphibias regularly exceed 700m 😲

Tandorio SHOULD NOT sell these watches as cheap as they do either, I guess you just can't trust Chinese products, better to sell your house and buy a swiss watch, because "they're worth it"... P.S. People who buy mechanical watches in the 21st century do it either because they can't afford to replace batteries or they are so bored with their lives they need adult toys to play with. My grandpa wore a mechanical watch most of his life, but once he switched to quartz he was very happy and felt no need to go back, that's the progression of technology.
