Pretty sure he did change other people appearance in anime, in the Hunter Exam when he threatens to kill Gon and the referee tried to intervene, he threw his needles on the referee's face and it started distorting

Oh man the way illumi could easily control leaders of the world and become a super villain. If he’s smart about it he could leave subtle hypnotic spells in even the strongest foes and they wouldn’t be able to tell.

Knowing Hisoka as a person, he loves to fight strong opponents for pleasure. So what's the pure reason behind as to why he didn't fight Illumi; when Illumi oozed his bloodlust towards him? Given the fact that Hisoka only rated Illumi at 95, and assuming he's at 100? The reason is that he miscalculated Illumi. The 95 there was based on Gittarackur which allows Illumi to hid his real strength/power. Remember that Illumi is a manipulator. He probably manipulated the numbers/aura on his own accord. Illumi is a different type of manipulator compared to the likes of Shalnark. As you can tell that Shalnark's aura is more lighter. Illumi's aura is more sinister because the malice in there is massive. Illumi is such a mysterious and weird guy, weird enough to not show his real powers even with the Zoldycks. "You see what I let you see, and think what I let you think"/"To envelope all things in light" -- Hence, the name Illumi; an antithesis to Meruem's "Light that Illuminates all light". Way back in Hunter Exam Arc, Hisoka threatens Illumi to not touch Gon; because Gon was Hisoka's prey. Illumi obeys, of course, he wasn't paid to assassinate Gon. And not to mention Gon broke Illumi's arm, and his reaction was "yep, it's broken"-- nonchalantly. Such a weird guy and 'dead' inside & out. In YorkNew Arc, Hisoka needs a help from Illumi just to sneak-out Ryodan's hideout. Illumi will just lend a hand if Hisoka has to pay him. Hisoka, of course, paid Illumi just to fulfill his ultimate dream to fight Lucilfer. Then here's the 13th Chairman Election Arc, where Hisoka has no idea what the Chimera Ants are, and Illumi suspected it (meaning, information-wise, Illumi owns it). He told Hisoka about Gon's condition (Illumi knows well what weaknesses Hisoka has in) and wanted to get 'rid' of Alluka. Hisoka helped Illumi on his mission without any form of payment, because you know, Hisoka is Hisoka; a transmuter who trolls, a whimsical liar, and just wanted to have some fun. In that case, Illumi low-key manipulates Hisoka, because he really knows what weaknesses Hisoka has in, and that is to enjoy; because Hisoka is bored at the moment. And during the mission, Hisoka failed at 'toying' on Illumi (Hisoka wanted to send the map on Illumi). Unfortunately, Illumi just wanted Hisoka to see what Illumi wanted to see for him (when Illumi sees Nanika's power, he wanted to control it; exact opposite on what he's telling to Hisoka which is to 'rid' Nanika). In science, animals instinctively knows ahead if there are tragedies to happen (e.g. Earthquakes, Hurricane, and the like). Black Vultures are scavengers, and Black Crows are bad Omen -- associated with death. The fact that these creatures were triggered by Illumi's bloodlust (which is about to kill the target/prey) means that 'that' target is about to die. Hisoka, of course, one of the smartest characters in HxH, refused to die by the hands of a professional assassin; because he wants first to 'taste' the wrath of Lucilfer. Sooner rather than later, we'll get about to see a battle between Pennywise and Pinhead/Sadako.

Honestly…. Togashi introduced the concept that manipulators and conjurers are the highest likely nen types to become specialist…. We saw one side of that with kurapika a conjurer becoming a specialist. I think if we ever do see illumi in the future I believe he will show the other side as a manipulator becoming a specialist. It would honestly explain why he is able to utilize so many other areas of nen so brilliantly and effectively, without much drain on his nen reserves.

i think the most fascinating aspect of illumi is his psychology. he is a ruthless, cold blooded killer because he is a zoldyck and that’s how zoldycks are supposed to be, how they’re abused and brutalized into the shape of since birth. killua was much a similar way at the beginning of the series, and we can even see this peek out again when he “flips his switch” on and adopts the detached personality of the assassin he was bred to be, but what saved killua from this was getting away from kukuroo mountain at such a young age and finding friends who were unlike himself. i fully believe illumi does not know he is traumatized, or that kikyou has her claws in his brain so deeply that she’s gouging out entire parts of his humanity. he thinks that this is how a family loves one another, and thus this is the way he treats killua, because he loves him (see his instant bloodlust at the mere idea hisoka might kill killua even as a joke.) he was raised to believe that alluka is not a member of the family, because that is what his parents think. he is the first child of a new generation, the guinea pig child cast aside for the silver haired heir until he is deemed useful enough to be used as a tool again. illumi is fascinating to me.

Also before killua acknowledged nen he already mastered skills related to assassination like rhythm echo, muscle and joint control, toxins resistance etc and i'm pretty sure those are zoldyck basic training so it would be weird if illumi didn't also master it.

It feels equally noteworthy that Illumi can control a downright insane number of people (living or dead), where most Manipulators usually are limited to a small number to achieve anything comparable.

I think illumi can change the appearance of others with the needles. He does so at the end of the hunter exam to one of the guards trying to stop him from getting to Gon. Though It was extremely painful

Hypnotic Spell is definitely Illumi's least useful ability for assassination but it is still an incredibly useful ability overall. Illumi is very power hungry and to achieve his ambitions there would be many individuals that could potentially be of great benefit to him if left alive. In this case, the ability to influence the thoughts and emotions of others without them even knowing they're being manipulated is absolutely invaluable.

Part of me really wonders if illumi can put small amount of aura in a needle with a command like "stop" and throw them into someone's body part and just stop that body part. 🤔 which would make him incredibly scary in a 1 on 1 fight

Wait, we already see Illumi uses his changing form needle on a person, it was on the judge in his fight with Killua in the Hunter exam. The facial muscle start to contracte and he said to the judge you have to remove them before your form change forever (something like that).

You also have to remember that when using abilities that rely on multiple nen affinities the strongest nen affinity can kind of carry the others

I still don't get how Killua didn't recognize him in the first arc, like, there is a guy, dressed like your brother, who uses the same abilities as your brother, with a lot of needles sticked into his face and you know your brother can change his face shape by sticking needles into it

Illumi is so weird, till now we did not see his real potential in a real fights, his bloodlust is an example of what will come in Illumi's future fight. For me he is the best nen manipulator in HxH, Chalnarck manipulations look so amateur in compared to him.

I thought emission was the separation of aura from the body as in, by itself. If it is in a vessel, it is attached to something and we know items can hold aura. Hell, we know aura can linger within an item beyond the person who placed it there so I think the needles can still be considered pure manipulation.

Manipulators are the ones that can imbue the most aura into an object, i think the imbuing part is a seperate classification from emission that is specific to manipulators since it means their aura mixes with whatever they are imbuing

As far as body manipulation killing people, I feel as tho I recall him throwing needles in someone’s face, their face changing and then they die, it seems. It was like an early episode I think around some time after the Killua rescue arc I think?

So according to a nen test online I am an enhancer and one of the abilities that would suit me best is pain train which powers me up the more pain I am supposed to feel. This is so potent for someone like me because I have a high degree of pain numbing as a result of my mental disorder over producing my bodies natural pain killers

Considering Emission is right next to Manipulation on the Nen ring and the Zoldyck family have limitless resources at their disposal it is completely fair to assume Illumi just has a MASSIVE SHIT TON of needles he's imbued with his nen via emission. For that matter regular old needles are pennies apiece so anyone could do the same thing. If we wanted to even make the Zoldyck resources a factor we might imagine the needles are hand-crafted and made of special, rare, nen-enhancing materials. As they say the simplest explanation is often the best.

I believe the conjure needles idea maybe like killua who was constantly shocked growing up maybe illumi was "trained" with needles. Otherwise why wouldn't the other members of their family use electricity in some way because they were trained differently is my guess.

I think emission deals with releasing raw aura from the body, while manipulation allows for you to infuse your aura into a living being or object, so Illumi wouldn't need emission. If we look at the other side of the nen ring, we see that transmutation causes your aura to mimic the qualities of various substances, while conjuration allows you to fashion your aura into a physical object that contains its own special properties. Therefore I think emission/manipulation possess a similar relationship to transmutation/conjuration, where one involves the use of raw aura performing a special task while remaining in the form of aura, while the other involves actual tangible substances that can accomplish tasks separate from the body.

That guy from the phantom troop I had ahard time telling if he was a conjurerwith manipulation powers or vise versa.

This ability seems overpowered. After getting pierced by a needle not only the target has lost the fight and is ready to be dispatched but it will also follow any commands given. To this point, this is reminiscent of Sharlnak's ability, with the huge advantage that there is no need to get close to stick an antenna, since the needles can be thrown from a distance, and that there is no limit on how many puppets can be controlled, enabling battles against several opponents. Though they appear zombified, the are still able to talk and behave like normal people if need to, like that mafia don. That said, the ability seems way too good, and I recall reading in this forum about the likeliness of it only working on people without nen, since Illumi uses it on civilians. That makes the ability useful but in a very different way. Unlikely as it is, even if the proper circumstances are given and Illumi is able to start a battle with an army at his disposition, it would be made of civilians, mostly useless to aid in a fight against a nen user. This renders the ability useless for fighting. This is, I assume, why I often read that we really haven't seen nothing on Illumi, people refuse to believe that he can have such an overpowered ability, such a one-hit-kill move, so it probably works only on normal people, still useful but for tasks other than fighting. I myself would see it this way. However, in episodes 142-143 there are two different instances where the needles are stuck on nen users: one of the amateur hunters sent to capture or kill Hisoka and Illumi is seen among corpses speaking on the phone, lying, with a couple of needles in his head and a zombie-like gaze. The other is Hishita, one of the butlers of the Zoldycks, who picks up killua in a car and reveals himself to be under illumi's control, again with a couple of needles in his head. It is almost guaranteed that both can use nen; one is a hunter, and the butlers are required to know hhow to use nen. If the newcomer Canary could, it is almost guaranteed that the veteran and seemingly high ranked Hishita can too. On the restrictions, I've noticed how needles seem to be stuck on people's heads, piercing the brain, which seems in line with the fact that hey allow for mind control. This may be a condition. Perhaps there has to be a minimum of needles stuck for it to work, even more the more nen the victim has, or perhaps the needles render an enemy unable to use nen, ... Speculation. Some drawback it might have, but still, this seems a combat oriented ability. This seem to destroy the common saying that nothing has been seen on Illumi to properly speculate on duel outcomes. What it hasn't been seen yet is Illumi fighting a tough opponent, but Illumi's skill definitely has been, so he can be compared to others with this in mind, and possible restrictions or vows aside it can be counted among the most effective offensive abilities so far. Discussion, opinions, thoughts, etc... all welcome

I guess Manipulation allows the person to transfer there nen to Different objects like we have seen Many Manipulators transferring there Nen to objects and well we also have Shu and well Manipulation is basically transferring your Nen into people or Objects to use so It can still be Pure Manipulation

No. Manipulation and Emission has the distinction based on the difference of their uses. While Emission can seperate thair aura from their bodies manipulators imbue objections or others with their nen that they control from a difference. The key distinct is the apparatus of use.

Illumi's nen abilities are cool and all, but did you know that Hisoka's nen ability Bungee Gum has both the properties of Rubber and Gum.

The idea behind the needle should be accurate(minus maybe the needles being conjured). I think Manipulators using emission isn't supposed to be a far out idea. It's exactly why Togashi placed the 2 next to eachother. Budget Illumi isn't fair. Manually controlling his target is a big advantage vs Illumi's versatility.
