The idea was cool to give 3DS family owners the opportunity to play Mario Maker. Just the execution removed too much from it to really enjoy it like the Wii U version.

Mario Maker 3DS doesn’t even have mystery mushrooms in the game. Which in my opinion was the best thing about Mario Maker. Not to mention the lag and the constant data loss

The only thing this game has over the original is the portability, and even that doesn’t matter anymore because of Mario Maker 2.

This game is a bizarre mess, but I still stand by what I said in that community post. This game came at the right time, and has effectively changed my life. I’ll always hold it near and dear to my heart, even if it’s not some objectively perfect game.

I can’t wait until Nintendo releases Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 4DS, where they’ve introduced 1,000 new stages, a gripping and emotional storyline, and jaw-dropping updated graphics solely for the Fly Swatting minigame, and they’ve also removed the feature of being able to create or play Mario levels

Mario Maker 3DS just has that weird quirk to it, but that's why I like it so much. I know some people don't like it, but the idea of making a game run on smaller hardware is really impressive to me (like Bioshock on iPhone, Minecraft on 3DS, etc.) Mario Maker 3DS was still a fun game to me, and while it is pretty outdated-looking now that Mario Maker 2 is a thing, SMM3DS still holds a special place in my heart. Very well-done review/

My opinion on the game: The offline, single player mode was very fun and challenging. The levels were pretty creative and fun and the some of the extra challenges were tough. This is probably the only good thing about the game. Making levels feels meaningless because the world can't play my levels. The fact that you can't search for levels is truly mindboggling. Playing online is kind of fun but you can't search for levels so it makes me not want to spend a lot of time on it. Although I have actually played the game with my brother (we both own a copy) and i'll just say local play is kind of fun because you can send each other levels and stuff but it's not something that you do for a while. I'd give it a 4.5/10. Not an entirely worthless experience because of the solo levels but because you can't share your levels or search for your favorites, it takes the original, compelling concept away. Oh yeah and the graphics for NSMBU are weird. I don't like using that mode. It's super fun to think about the game though lol

Actually, all the models for the NSMBU style aren’t actually models, Their pre-rendered sprites with a lightmap layer. The only ones that are models are Mario Bowser etc.

Honestly thet should've gave it an exclusive nsmb 2 theme compared to the terrible looking nsmb u theme to add originality and a reason to come back to the game

As someone who picked it up bc of how cheap it was, it was perfectly fine to me. That being said, it was $12 and even in Mario Maker 2, I don't create levels and I also have never tried looking for a specific level (I've looked for specific Super Worlds though) so that limitation wouldn't have mattered to me. I can def see how those same limits would ruin the game for others though

I only have two problems with Mario Maker 3DS. 1. The lack of online support (even though the original Mario Maker got the online functionality removed, it should have been added to 3DS.) 2. The fact that HALF of the items in the course editor need to be unlocked. It would have been fun to unlock a few of the cooler and more advanced items, but half seems a bit much. Though this is more of a nitpick.

While this game is indeed a pointless experience for level creators I wouldnt say its a bad game for the players that just want a new Mario game to play. I had more fun with the Super Mario Challenge mode of this game than the entirety of New Super Mario Bros 2, the levels here are very well designed despite the limitations of the editor and more challenging, and I even found some great and creative levels on the recomended section of the course world despite not being able to search for specific levels. I also liked the medals system that would always make the player play the level on a diferent perspective. In my opinion it added way more replay value to the levels than "find 3 star coins during a level" and I would love to see it on other l Mario games. and if you think about it the clear conditions seen on Mario maker 2 is clearly a evolution of this idea. In the end I ended up playing this version more than the wiiu version solely because the single player content is better as I didnt make levels anyway but I can see why its pointless for the level creators part of the community. If you can find this game for cheap id say its still worth it for the Super Mario Challenge mode as it will probably become some sort of "obscure lost Mario levels" kind like the e-reader levels from Super Mario bros 3 on the gba, but if you want to share your ideas you should pass this one. For me on my personal experience I only used the editor of this game to practice my level design as I'm a SMW hack creator.

I feel like Nintendo thought Streetpass was a stronger feature than it actually was and were banking on it for level transfers

I remember being so disappointed playing this game for a while only to realize I couldn't upload my courses. I did find use in it though as a "blueprint". When going on trips or stuff like that with family I would use it to plan out my levels, which I then recreated on the Wii U. Was convenient. Obviously this use is pointless now since Mario Maker 2 is out on a portable console, but I had some fun times with an otherwise not so good game.

I didn't have a Wii u so unfortunately, this was the only way I could make Mario levels 😅

Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS should've been Mario Maker Pocket Editon in my opinion.

I remember playing a level in the Super Mario Challenge that made my good old 3DS lag like crazy. It was a NSMBU style level with coins everywhere and the 3DS clearly couldn't handle it. Add this to the list of baffling things in this game!

10:20 the mysterious mushroom is still in the game, nintendo forgot one thing, Kamek. You can use Kamek that can sometimes spawn a mysterious mushroom. It will just add a power up to mario, with the same model as normal mario.

i played 250 hours of pokemon moon the month that it came out. hunted dozens of shiny pokemon, absolutely love gen 7. edit: just had to wholeheartedly agree that people will look back fondly on the generation, maybe not as fondly as gen 5, but still a very good gen.

I picked this game up on 3ds years ago save for not having a Wii-U, and I had no idea up until this video that I was really getting a botched experience with the game. I had wondered to myself what people saw in MM past playing the single player content of Nintendo provided levels. It had me dismiss continuing with the series, since I really was feeling like for some weird reason this feels like half of what it could be. Now I’m thinking a bit more on giving MM2 a buy. I wish they let you put things in the start area in Mario maker 2 like they did in Mario Maker because I’m trying to remake one of my levels in Mario Maker 2 which had things in the start area meaning I have to change it

The mystery mushroom is in the 3DS version... Kinda. In this version, if an object gets hit by a projectile from a big flying kamek, there's a chance that object would turn into the mystery mushroom; however, getting it would only make Mario duck, as well as giving him an extra hit.

Also I think there is a distinctive charm to the NSMBU style. The fact that it is more pixely than usual is interesting. Its a nice sneak peak into what could have been a 3DS port for NSMBU.

MM3DS was a mistake. Never mind the single player campaign, as good as that might sound, they could've easily made it into a free update for the Wii U version like how MM2 had World Maker. The fact that they half assed the port says alot about the quality of the game. It might've worked better as a N3DS Exclusive but I doubt it. Should've stayed a Wii U exclusive.

I have this game on my 3ds. I know its online features are kinda trash, but it makes up for it with the extra play time from the super mario challenge and unlocking course pieces. I love this game, even with its flaws. It may be the worst mario maker game by technicality, but it is far from "trash".

Since I never had a Wii U this was the only way for me to experience Mario Maker and I actually quite enjoyed it. 100% the single player campaign even.

Because Wii U Mario Maker Wifi support got shut off, 3ds not being able to share levels doesn't really matter now, but the fact that they really released the game like this just a year after the og is absolutely perplexing!

You know, something I don't like about SMM2 is that it feels like a lot of the spirit of the original is gone. Many new big things, but not really any of the little things that the first had. What about the interactable letters on the title? What about the opening screen being different each week? What about the Mario Paint fly game? Mystery Mushrooms, Weird Mushrooms, the original big mushrooms?

This was my first Mario Maker game, and I remember how much fun the 100 Challenge was

I've always only liked creating levels, not playing them. I picked this game up a year after it's release and I loved it. I thought it was a great substitute for the Wii U version, as I didn't own a Wii U. The Super Mario Challenge was just the icing on the cake for me and I still go back and play some of the levels here and there. Great video!

There are times where I regret buying a game due to me getting my hopes too high. This is one of those. How odd that I watched this while playing Super Mario Maker 2.

I have the game, when Mario maker and hyrule warriors came out on the Wii-U, they hooked me but I didn't have a Wii-U. So I bought them on the 3DS. SMM was alright but it was silly to me that I couldn't search for levels. The challenge levels were pretty fun.

I feel like this video is a direct criticism to the 3ds. It is so that anyone can enjoy Mario maker no matter what device they have. And no matter what device, it has its cons.

As someone that has played all three versions of Mario Maker and had gotten a Wii U just for it, I can confirm that the 3DS Version was a perplexing release. The idea of portable Mario Maker is good, but by taking out the ability to upload new levels you're literally taking out any incentive to make levels (if you're someone that's focused on sharing them, someone who just wants to make levels will still do so). This is the Mario Maker I've played the least, but I still have a couple of memories of playing it and I remember having the game card.

My brother and I still had fun with this game, making the most cursed levels we could think of on long car rides for each other to play

The reason why the NSMBU theme looks crappy than the actual NSMB2 is that the enemies are sprites in SMM instead of models, except the bosses. This is the same for the original Wii U version and even in SMM2, except for the 3D World theme where you'll notice the difference if you play between the two themes.

It’s actually useful now cause even though it had maker 1 elements you can still upload courses to course world on your 3DS but after march 31st you could not on the Wii U so the 3DS might be a perfect choice.

I had the same problem too with uploading levels; and I thought it was because I was playing SMM on a 2DS. Also after pausing from playing the super Mario challenge for a long while, it will send me to the beginning, as if nothing ever happened!!

Thank you so much for posting this. I was actually considering to buy this one day but seeing what it is lacking compared to the Wii U version, I probably won't unless it's its cheap as you say it is.

I specifically have a memory of me when i was like 9 or 10 giving my dad $20 to buy me mario maker on the 3ds as he was going into the city as i had no game stores near me, and then being disappointed when it wasnt like how the wii u one was and i had to unlock everything on my own.

Mario maker kind of feels like it was made for the 3DS, I just wish the game had online and that you start of with all course parts.

I really liked being able to make levels on the go and I honestly prefer making levels on the 3DS more than any version of Mario maker but not being able to upload levels really ruined it. I wish you could at least transfer the levels to your Wii U to upload them.

Grump. I'm like a year and eight months late to the party? *makes a farting noise with my tongue* It seems Nintendo forgot to pick their brain up from the laundromat. Like why did they even waste the time porting this if they were going to make this re-release effectively pointless? If I created a level and found out I couldn't share it online, I'd feel like the biggest moron on planet Earth. This port was clearly made with virtually no care and hastily plopped on the 3DS so Nintendo could have something to sell that year. But they made numerous baffling decisions with the 3DS in the system's last years. Mario Party: The Top 100, a good idea, but they go about it in the laziest way possible and put a game that's supposed to be a celebration of the ten console games on a HANDHELD, which isn't something many Mario Party fans think of as the ideal way to play a Mario Party game! Should've been a Switch game! ... Sorry, I'm still a little salty over that game. Or even Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn. Let's introduce ravel abilities, even though the game isn't designed for them and all they do is make you cheese through the level design. Or let's make a hard mode, but it'll have a pest constantly buzzing in your ear. I'm honestly stumped by this release. Nintendo could've done MUCH more with this port, but they choose to make it a lazy cashgrab instead of giving this game another chance to flourish on a platform that wasn't six feet under. But this is a company that is quite the enigma, aren't they? And thanks for the mind refresher on this forgotten trash! :)

For me the big selling point was being able to collab with other 3ds owners on levels so I'd make a level my cousin would add some things and we could trade levels and play them the whole online thing wasn't really an issue for me as I never really made levels for people online but more so for my family which was made easier by it being on a system they owned so for me paradoxically enough the 3ds was the version where sharing was the easiest and it felt that there were always fun new levels to play unlike online(which was probably mostly my fault for only ever going on 100 mario easy)

At least we had "Goomba Story"... Those were fun days...

I personally think it’s a good game. Even if I can’t share my levels with the world, I can at least share them with my family. That’s how I like to play the game.

I enjoyed it. Probably not as much as the Wii U version if I played it but I still liked making levels. I was sad when you couldn't upload but that doesn't matter because nobody would play it.

The fact that Little Big Planet was able to provide a more robust level creation/sharing system via the internet on the PSP in 2009. Almost a decade later and Nintendo couldn't be bothered to do the bare minimum.

I always wanted to try Super Mario Maker but I didn't have a Wii U. When this game was announced I got so excited - but then when I heard there would be no level sharing it killed ALL of my excitement. I used to play a lot of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games, so making and sharing/downloading levels was something I was used to (we even had a small community on the GameFAQs boards). Not being able to do so for a standard Mario-style level maker imwas beyond mind boggling. If the original DS could do it, I can't imagine any reason the 3DS couldn't. Nintendo.. just occasionally makes decisions that don't seem to make a shred of sense.

Super mario maker 3ds was my first 3ds game i got myself a regular 2ds with mario kart 7 in spetember 2017 with super mario maker 3ds and let me tell you i loved that thing to the point of not knowing about the switch until 2018 because i didn't follow nintendo news often back then because of lack of Internet i only had a wii with a god tier game selection including mario galaxy 1 and 2, mario kart wii, smash brawl, kirby return to dreamland and epic yarn, warioware smooth moves and angry birds trilogy i had more but i feel you get the idea but getting back to the point i spent hours making levels and playing them making mario maker 3ds my 3rd most played game only beating smash 4 and mario kart 7 but i would have loved to be able to share my levels and also use amiibo but at that time i didn't have any
