@@travisspazz1624 The film was PERFECT up until the end of the 'you will never leave' scene (excluding the horrible CGI). It was SUBTLE and beautifully shot horror. The subtlety I think was what made it so masterful. After that point it becomes generic and a bit of a bore to watch.

@@user-nk5pv5np3v It was good enough at the beginning when all you needed was a pretty face to keep you interested in the movie. Beautiful girl, beautiful set design, beautiful cinematography. So true, that final scene with Syndey screaming gave me CHILLS and made the movie for me. Also feel like movies with this type of horror are also so much more scarier for women because it's like something that is somewhat real - forced labor and pregnancy in general

Well, yes. I suppose that we are forced to go through labor when giving birth to a child. But the reward is worth what little suffering women go through when bringing life into the world. But forced pregnancy? We aren't living in, nor have we ever lived in, a script from handmaid's tale. Forced pregnancies are a ficticious jedi mind trick that only works when debating pro-choice and any perks pro choice claims to have for women.

The ending felt like more of a social commentary on bodily autonomy. Cecilia did not consent to having a baby in the first place, so she terminated it. If Cecilia kills the baby because of a deformity, the subtext is less impactful. Bodily autonomy is empowering. Eugenics not so much.

I took the tooth falling out and her saying something along the lines of “this isn’t gods will” when the nail was peeling off to be signs that it was actually demonic. since what they’re doing would be sacrilege. and then I assumed it was like a satan baby and that’s why she killed it

[Spoiler Alert] I think from the get-go she really doesn't like the baby and there's this scene where she told the priest that this isn't right. If you look at the ending, i think she didn't even looked at the baby until when she's about to crash it. My take was she is not feeling sad about the baby, rather angry and the last scene was an emotional catharsis for her letting go of the injustice and anger she felt
@siobhan98
@siobhan98 Ай бұрын
Totally agree. I actually gasped when she went to the rock. I think the movie has some really radical feminist politics that ppl are overlooking. The ending is so chilling because it’s ambiguous whether the child is the 2nd coming or the anti-Christ. The way it pants seems so creepy and animal like, but at the same time Jesus was known not to cry at his birth. Realistically would Jesus not be panting like that after being born if he wasn’t crying? The baby seems to be red (like a devil) but that could also just be blood or something. Either way we can be pretty sure that she couldnt be 100% on what the baby was which makes her decision a really radical display of self-determination imo (not necessarily in a good way)

I feel like the insemination, the baby, or Isabelle didnt need to be over explained. IVF exists, theres so many ways to create pregnancy that doesnt require sex. I feel like the baby being demonic vs malformed is purposefully meant to be interpreted by the viewer. Isabelle wanted to be the person who would get pregnant. Insemination doesnt mean itll stick. Im sure they tried on almost all of the nuns, the older nun who called her Saint Cecilia had the crosses on her feet. Implying that she was a potential surrogate who got pregnant and tried to escape. The pregnancy probably failed. Isabelle was just on board and wanted it to be her. The red nuns were completely unnecessary tho

@@orlandogodoy3233i dont feel like she was ever conflicted. If anything the movie showed that shes more dedicated than the others. She frequently had to reiterate that she was sure she wanted to be a nun and then its revealed shes not running from anything. Her convent just shut down. She states that her reason for becoming a nun was that she literally was dead when she was 13 in an accident.

What's kind of cool and disturbing about that one cell phone moment is that it adds to the isolation the WOMEN specifically face at the convent. The priest being the one who is seen with a cell phone, while everyone else feels almost like they're in a technology-free world furthers the theme of the women being removed of their rights, stripped from access to the world.

Unfortunately this entire movie was ruined for me because I was sandwiched between 2 of the WORST couples in the history of movie goers. The 2 teenage girls next to me WOULD NOT get off their damn phones the ENTIRE movie ON FULL BRIGHTNESS. AND EVERY LITTLE THING that happened they would gasp and loudly start talking/laughing, THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MOVIE. Theres a scene where a bird hits a window and the 2 gorls were CACKLING and screaming as if it was the scariest/funnest thing to ever happen. And then during the quiet scenes of the movies they would just loudly start talking at the screen and saying things like "THERES SOMEONE BEHIND HER. BET. THERES A JUMPSCARE COMING. BET." THROUGHOUT THE WHOLEEEE MOVIEEEE. AND THEN the couple to the other side of me were these 2 old people who would NOT stop narrating the whole damn movie. There's a scene in the movie were Sidneys character throws up a tooth and the old lady next to me goes "omg! She threw up a tooth!" And then during another scene she goes "Shes walking barefoot!!" And during another scene she goes "OMG! HER WATER BROKE!" AT FULL VOLUME. LIKE WE GET IT. WE'RE WATCHING THE MOVIE TOO. WE'RE NOT BLIND. YOU DONT NEED TO NARRATE THE WHOLE MOVIE FOR US. OMGGGG It was the WORST movie experience of my life. I couldn't even focus on the damn movie. What happened to movie theater etiquette????? I was SO angry. I have a growing issue when reviewers who have been reviewing and researching horror movies for years and years rate a movie predictable but for the majority of people it's not. So if you say it's not good because it's predictable I think that's a little biased.

But I really enjoyed both Immaculate and Late Night With the Devil, neither are perfect, but both were very well executed, and were engaging stories. Both could have stepped on the brakes and been a little more slow burn, but they both did a great job of not fully giving the game away until the climax.

What disturbed me most was that there was even equipment inside the convent whereby you could watch the development of the fetus on the screen. Presumably there was need to use it on the nuns fairly often. As for the ending, I won't say it was really that surprising. Sydney was faced with Rosemary's choice at the end of Polanski's film. It could only end either one way or the other. In any case, the ending was left unambiguous since we didn't see what happened. Maybe she changed her mind at the last moment and missed, and that left open the possibility of a sequel.

I’d also like to warn you that The First Omen is similar to immaculate but has particularly traumatizing birth scenes, one in particular was a lot more severe/body horror heavy. Yes, if Immaculate was borderline too far, she’ll need to be prepared for the insanity of The First Omen. Personally, I loved it because it focused so much on tension building and the feeling of not knowing what’s real or not, plus the way it was shot added to the unsettling atmosphere so much. It really hits those triggers of forced pregnancy and powerlessness though.

I honestly didn’t have too high of hopes going into this film especially as the whole nun/church tropes have been done to death at this point, however I was very pleasantly surprised with some of the choices this movie made. The music was amazing especially since they incorporated a lot of it into the movie instead of feeling that it had a soundtrack thrown on top of it. I, admittedly had not seen any of Sydney’s previous works but she was amazing in this. And the ending, I didn’t know how they were going to pull it off, I will say it was a bold choice to do what they did. Like you though, I’m glad they did it tastefully

Its an interesting twist on Rosemary's Baby. I admire it didnt shy away from the gore. The villain was a bit hammy. I loved the score though.

I sort of saw it as the same thing, in a way. In Rosemary's Baby, her deciding to stay with the baby was her deciding to take control of that situation with HER baby. In Immaculate, same thing, we're seeing a woman take control of the situation

I would love to hear your thoughts on the book Delicate Condition. It deals with pregnancy but in a way I think you would really appreciate. If you're skeptical, reading the authors note before reading the book might also be good as a way to see what the book is going for before actually getting into it.

Adore your channel, your reviews and personality. Thank you for being a woman horror reviewer woman with obviously a woman’s point of view!! It is much appreciated from one woman to another!! We need more more more!!! ❤❤❤ I hope you’ve recovered from the ending. I LOVED this movie. I generally strongly dislike catholic religious horror (still recovering from years of catholic school for the rest of my days) but I loved this one. I can see how it was hard for you mama. That end scene was bbbrrruuuuutalll… but OSCAR performance!! Sydney Sweeney bringing home the gold there! ( in my dreams, I know) ❤ THANK you again for being such a great horror reviewer!! I fuckin loved this movie from start to finish like I was so invested. Sidney Sweeny gave such an amazing performance and that final act I fuckin loved. I didn’t have any complaints for this movie other than expecting the ppl wearing the red masks to show up more but that’s it. It was a 9.5/10 for me. I didn’t mind the jumpscares personally.

This movie made me cry and I don't have kids, but as a woman, it's so relatable. I also like how it makes us reflect as to whether Mary even wanted to be a mother. Religion is often from the patriarchal perspective, so it's nice that the movie looks at that perspective without being completely anti-religion.

So I really liked this movie. It's also my favorite of the year so far. I believe the movie takes place on 2014, because we she looks at the article about her drowning you can see almost the entire date, which is 200? So since she was 12 when that happened I figure it hasn't been much more than 10 years since so some time in the mid to late 2010s.

I saw this movie as a suprise on easter monday, so that was fitting. In genereal I really likes this review, but I was wondering about the jumped scares point, because I can't remeber one single jump scare, except the one cut from pitch black to sunny day, like a flashbang went of in the cinema. Of couse I can't speak to the emotion that this would project on someone how expirenced a pregnatcy, but for me this was a kinda tame movie. The whole part with the failed tries remindet me most of Alien 4. I've read that Sydney Sweeney 'forced' the change of the ending to the one we got and if nothing else for that she deserves some respect, she avoided the vanilla happyending. For me the highlights of the first half were Sassy Sister Isabelle and Zero-F#+*s given Sister Gwen. In the beginning I found Sydney's performance weak, but she showed up fot the 2nd half. All in all better then I expected, but overall still a very by the number 'horror' movie.

I’m soooo surprised this movie is so polarizing. I wasn’t going to see this movie at all, because I wrote it off as another basic, boring, religious horror. I watched a little bit of your review and decided to go see it. Was good timing too cause I went in the 2nd to last day they were showing it, and I was by myself. 😂 I was pleasantly surprised by this film, I thought it was super interesting and really good! Sydney was fantastic and the gore was awesome. Literally the only negative is the pointless jump scares. I really hope we get more work from Sydney in horror!

This was a great movie! Sydney Sweeney’s acting was INCREDIBLE. She’s a fantastic very talented actress. She was so good that the movie would have not been the same without her. The scene of her screaming at the very end, damn that was 100% talent. And I thought the entire ending was a masterpiece

Finally watched it and **spoilers** I will say the dream sequence that follows her confession does seem to have a bit of merit to it when you realize that she is on a table with people around her touching her while she screams. While it likely in reality wasn’t her face being touched like it was so oddly in the dream, she does fall pregnant after passing out that night, so it could very well have been her mind typing to come up with an odd coping nightmare of what happened during her being unconscious.

i definitely got the feeling that it was a demon baby lol. what convinced me specifically was the pastor saying 'if God didn't want this, then why isn't he stopping us?' and then everyone dies to a symbol of God (the cross, the rosemary, the nail)

I didn't think she killed it because it was deformed and out of mercy towards the baby, but because she was convinced that that baby should not exist. In the scene when she is confessing with the priest, she says 'this is not God's work', to which he replies 'if it's not, then why isn't he doing anything to stop it?' and she remains silent. To me, this is the moment where she thought 'then I am going to stop it, THIS is what God put me here for, THIS is why he saved my life'. And since that moment she was determined to end with all that devilish work. That's why she burned down the lab and killed the three people responsible, because she didn't need to do all that just to escape, she had to stop it. And that's also why she killed the baby, to finally put an end to it. And the movie ends right there too.

I can definitely see how this movie would be upsetting if you had a special needs child. But I also think we get a lot of movies where the mother keeps the demon baby and loves it. And there is nothing wrong with loving your child no matter what, because they are your baby. I just think that even if the baby was totally fine, I don't think the character would have wanted it.

Idk, I’m kinda let down that you liked it. You did mention the flaws that were obvious and explained your thoughts and opinions. I found it so boring, predictable and not horrific. I didn’t have the attachment that you did with pregnancy so that’s why it didn’t affect me. There were no true horrifying or scary scenes. It seemed so run of the mill and exploiting Sydney for being pretty lol which was hinted at in the movie alongside other jealousies. It was such a shame and so overhyped. Such an underwhelming movie imo.

It was the director's first "Horror" movie. So I think he did fairly well. Sydney Sweeney was great in the movie and as a producer as well. I appreciate the "Nunsploitation" aspects but they didn't go as far as most of those movies had. It might have been too campy if they went that way too hard.

I wish some of the movie's plot points we're not left out like that. I wish the story was meatier...? The jumpscares are so weak they could've removed them, or made few but effective ones. I still enjoyed this but I can see the classic potential this could've been.
