In Episode 1668, Sean Woodley is joined by Jamar Hinds (Raptors Republic) to react to the Toronto Raptors signing Immanuel Quickley to a new 5-year, $175 million contract to solidify the Quickley-Scottie Barnes tandem long into the future before digging into the looming decisions on the futures of Bruce Brown and Gary Trent Jr. Off the top, Sean and Jamar detail why the Quickley deal is a great one for the Raptors even with the sticker shock of a $35 million AAV. 141 million in cap sounds like a lot but 141 divided by 5 is just 28.2 and you still need 15 players lol. Regardless quickley got every penny he was worth he probably won't be underpaid at any point of this 5 year contract unless he makes consecutive all star teams.

most teams concentrate a huge chunk of their cap in their top 5-7 players. it's just how it works. to have a guy who's gonna be an above average starter making 20% of your cap is absolutely good business, and that's been so for as long as there has been a cap. totally disagree that he won't be underpaid at any point. by year 3 he's gonna be ranked in the 20s among point guards in terms of annual salary. he's 14th as of right now. you cannot tell me he's not gonna comfortably be a top-20 point guard at any point during this contract. I'd bet by year 2 or 3 it's universally seen to be a team-friendly contract.

@@LockedOnRaptors that's if everything goes fine on and off the court for quickley. You have now invested almost a quarter of your cap to a guy who has only started half a season and struggled in the playoffs both times he was there because he can't finish at the rim well he's skinny.. I do admire your persistent optimism though. Quickley is a good player I just think that 35 was definitely at the upper end of what Toronto was willingly to pay.

yeah, we just don't see eye to eye on this and that's fine. I think using a couple tiny playoff samples for a bench guy is maybe not the best way to project someone going forward. he clearly has the knack for being a lead guard even based on the short sample last season. he feels like a very safe bet to at minimum be a neutral value deal, but two years from now I really don't think it's even a debate that it's a very team friendly deal.

To say davion Mitchell isn’t a point guard is insane. I’m used to woodley saying stupid stuff. Like Jaylon Tyson is the best chance at a scoring league leader out of the draft. He says stupid sh it. Davion was in the kings rotation for multiple years. The kings arnt known for development. Careers go there to die normally. Not thrive. Let’s give this POINT GUARD a chance. He’s still pretty young. And there’s more upside here. He was in a really Bad environment. Davion mitchel and shead will battle it out for the back up point guard duties. It’s Davion’s to lose. And my guess is maybe we bring in a more veteran PG still in free agency or in a sign and trade for Gary Trent. Shead is prob the 905 starting PG to start the year

The guy is an undersized 2 gurad in the league and that's why they make him play point. He's not a natural one guard. Butler played the point in college. As it stands right now he's the 14th highest paid PG in the league, which is gonna go down as more new deals get signed in the rising cap environment. It's gonna be more than fine.

In 3 seasons if quickley is an All star he might be worth 35 million. But has this what the cap has come too. Is gradey dick gonna get 30+ million a year if he plays like he did the last half of the season. When he's up for contract. I thought quickley was worth more around 25 honestly maybe I'm just underbidding according to sean. But outside of OG the raptors have payed jacob and other guys too much.

Jakob making 20 million is going to one of the better value deals in the league over the next couple years. that's WELL below what average starter money is gonna be as the cap rises. consider that Fred (43), OG (42) and Siakam (47) are all making wayyyy more than IQ on their next deals. it's the new landscape we're living in, and everyone has to recalibrate what an "overpay" is. it's all about percentage of the cap. gotta look past the sticker shock of the raw dollar amounts.

@@LockedOnRaptors i just think a team like Toronto that isn't a free agency destination. that has little margins for error should be a little more money savvy. More times than not they pay there own players more than the free agent market was going to give them. It's not just about what your production is worth it's about your market. And Toronto seems to just pay there guys what they ask if they can give it to them.

yeah I don't see that as a bad thing. they avoided a 5th year player option here, likely because they went as high as they did. i just think you're looking at all of this through an outdated lens. and we have no idea what the RFA offer sheet threats may have been. we probably won't know. but I really don't think the difference between 28 and 35 matters all that much here man. because they're not a free agent destination is precisely why they don't nickel and dime guys, and its not like they need to be worried about hoarding cap space for free agent swings.

They are gonna run into a situation where in 2 seasons when they are finally decent they won't be able to pay there guys to keep around like they did with OG and Pascal. If you get quickley for like 28 vs 35 that's more money for Gradey or RJ or whoever we need to keep man. You pay market price for everybody your gonna have a Mediocre team. Teams that get production at or below market value have a major advantage HUGE!! REMEMBER OG on his 17 million deal everybody wanted him and that contract lol. You get more value in a deal that way.

in 2015's cap landscape absolutely. would you prefer the players get less of the league's basketball income split and send more to the owners? it's a totally different cap climate. everyone needs to recalibrate what they think is an overpay.

Bro, its an over payment. He is only $3-6 Million under Morant and SGA. That is a joke. Should have been under 30 for 5 years as other teams couldnt offer more than 4.

SGA is gonna be making like 80 million a year on his next deal lol. the cap is rising 10% a year. it is not an overpay, full stop. any deal signed this summer is going to age extremely well simply because it was signed this year. they also clearly paid to get the 5th year without a player option, which is a good thing. the cap landscape is just not the same. Jamar's point in the show about the people who lost their minds about the Conley deal back in 2016 eventually proving foolish applies in the same way to the Quickley deal.

@@LockedOnRaptors SGA deal is still 2 years away. And Conley only looks ok at the end of the deal. I want fair throughout the deal. Gross overpay for what we get now. The quality of player quickly is doesn’t compare to the contracts around him. Obviously I want to be wrong. And the player should take less to get the 5th year not we play more to get it. Players need to think what is best for the team to win. You need good contracts to win. Would have liked to say quickly say 30M is amazing deal for me and let’s win. Olynk overpay, this is an overpay, can’t be doing that when you want to build a winner. Doenst matter how much or little an overpay it is. Still an overpaying habit is being established.

Conley's like two contracts removed from that deal in 2016 lol. you're just completely not grasping the changing cap environment. the 5th year option is absolutely a thing you have to pay for when the market for a lead guard in 2028 is gonna be like $50 million.
