Impel Down is where my aggressive love for Buggy began. This arc was nothing but sheer joy for me - which is hilarious because it takes place in hell 😂 love seeing your reactions as always Jimmy!

Boa backstory is the darkest thing in One piece so far the implication and the parallel with the comfort girls and Medusa. Boa was only 12 when she was sold as a “service “ slave and her sister even younger and the celestial dragons was the first men they ever met. When Boa was telling her backstory her younger sister was screaming by remembering the story. Their backstory was dark as hell

The Haki of the Supreme King is not exclusive to Luffy though, they say like one in a million people get it, Boa Hancock herself is confirmed to have it in this arc.

As short as it is, Amazon Lily is a really really special arc for me. As a survivor of sexual assault, seeing Luffy at the height of his emotional intelligence and perceptiveness being like "you don't have to talk about this if it's so painful!" to Boa, with that in and of itself being WHY Boa is sharing what she's sharing with him about her time with the Celestial Dragons...I was SOBBING. I fell in love with Luffy just as much as Boa did during that arc.

Jimbei was first mentioned in the Baratie arc by Johnny or Yosaku (I forget which) almost 500 chapters ago. He was a warlord, Arlong's boss, and he sent Arlong loose in the East Blue. And apparently he has regrets about that. You'll surely learn more later, mainly because a comment you liked spoiled that, but don't worry about that part.

We don't know at this time why Ace has such resentment towards his father, but Whitebeard is arguably the best dad in anime so he's not exactly losing out.

The Gold Lion or "Shiki" his name in japanese, appears in the movie Strong World, so you can check it later!

I really enjoy your format of breaking the arc down into multiple live reactions as you go along. It's so much more fun than hearing all your thoughts at the end.

Really pay attention to the cover stories around this time, its the only time in the manga you get to see what the rest of the strawhats are up to. In the anime they did adapt the cover stories and added more but not so much in the manga

Marineford, is an arc. One of the most arciest arcs of all time.

Buggy has been specifically looking for the lost treasure of Captain John, a famous pirate, for I think all his appearances between East Blue and now. We know that Moria had been digging up the corpses of powerful fighters, because of Ryuma, and Captain John was one of them. He was the General Zombie who was drinking, Absalom mentioned him by name. It's reasonable enough that Moria also took whatever that corpse was buried with, including that armband that was a secret map.

Shanks and Buggy are not actually blood related. They meant brother as a term of endearment cuz they were on the same crew and very close.

Jinbe finally being introduced here in Impel Down (he was mentioned briefly in chapter 69 in between Baratie and Arlong Park!) is the fastest I've ever fallen in love with a character with the first sentence he says to Ace that we see."It is not my flesh that hurts, Ace, but my heart that I can't [help]" Bon Clay is one of the best non Straw Hat characters period. Buckle up for War of the Best/Marineford! It's a ride!

14:10 so, it's complicated. "golden lion" shiki appears in a few places in one piece media, specifically a movie and a prequel chapter oda drew. the prequel chapter is canon, shiki is a canon character, but the movie where he appears is not canon, and we have never actually seen shiki fight, only heard legends. there's a few characters in one piece like that, the most recent example being uta from movie red. uta is even more complicated than shiki, but for spoiler-reasons, we won't go into it.

Jimmy, 2 things! 1. When buggy accidentally ate his DF he lost the map to CAPTAIN JOHN'S treasure. You can imagine it has been Buggy's lifelong dream to find his treasure thats why he was so surprised and willing to help luffy for it. 2. Back in Baratie Arc when Nami was flipping thru wanted posters, Johnny and Yosaku mentioned that Arlong was a tough not to crack because he is backed by a warlord and it was named dropped to be JINBEI, up until this point Jinbei has the most gap from being mention to being introduced!

Oda never forgets and it's magical. He also does anything he can to combat happiness so it's a double edged sword.

Impel down was definitely the moment i had to take a step back and really appreciate just how great of a storyteller oda is to have a whole arc without the core crew and still be so heavily invested into the story and characters with just luffy and former antagonist/side characters ill never forget how hyped i was reading this arc week to week. And marineford...... well i dont want to spoil but you are in for a ride that i cannot wait to watch soon looking forward to it!

Croco-Mom is an interesting theory. I’m pretty sold on the idea that Ivan helped Crocodile transition to male. The second leap that Crocodile is Luffy’s mum I don’t believe, I feel like there would have had to have been some hints back in Alabasta. Edit: I do love hearing your speculation/theories some of them are surprisingly close.

Happy to see you going through One Piece. Impel down was crazy but Marineford is its own beast.

I loved that in both Amazon Lily and Impel Down the trend of our enemies being just as strong or stronger than Luffy continues, showing us that it wasn't just a fluke and the fact that an admiral and a warlord came after our strawhats in Sabaody that we lost. Moria was telling Luffy in Thriller Bark that he wasn't ready for what came next and almost gave up on the fight at the end there, it feels like him knowing he would get his ass beat then Oda went on to humble Luffy for the next 3 arcs.

4:05 It's not as much "to stay in power" as it is "not to be ostracized". Call it survivor's remorse, call it victim shame, it's on that vein. Hancock's issue with what truly happened to her being known is not that she'll lose power, but that everyone will hate her. In fact, once she gathers herself and talks to Luffy, once he knows they were slaves, and based on Sandersonya's reactoin, what happened to them, she asks him directly "Now that you know, do you hate me?" That's why they hide their history, and that's why Hancock puts up this façade of flawlessness (and she kinda believes her own character to some degree)

Impel Down is in my personal top 5 favourite arcs. The comedy is on point, the stakes are clear and high, the drama is heart-wrenching, the reencounters are amazing (all hail Buggy! 🙌🏼🙏🏼), and I just *love* prison escape plots! Oda made an awesome yet not too long "enter and escape the fortress" ❤

Don't worry, you're not supposed to know why ace hates his father yet, just keep reading, also Shiky (the golden lion guy you were interested in) is a movie antagonist, his was the first of a new era of op movie's animation, after this saga ends you should definitely watch and review it

I would definitely suggest you wait to finish the saga before doing a discussion video with some friends. The saga as a whole is really well-rounded for that type of a discussion, and would love to get your take on it!

Ah yes the CrocoMom theory is here! At this point in the story I didn't actually believe it myself when people told me about it, but I do think that Iva with his fruit powers did change crocodile from a women to a man. Very Plausible.

Luffy comes across as very aromantic to me, and I can't see him ever being in a romantic relationship. He has a family, and it's the strawhats. Definitely still means other people can (and will) fall in love with him, though, lol. This was great, love seeing your thoughts and theories! You didn't miss anything with Ace's thoughts on his dad, we were all asking the same questions as to his anger.

Oda including the thought process and progressive topic such as queer people back in 2008/2009 in impel down (even before with alabasta and bon clay in 2001 tbh) is so fascinating to me. Jimmy I can’t even describe how hyped this video made me. BON CLAY! IVANKOV! CROCO-BOY! BUGGY! MR 3! I love this arc so much because of how incredibly fun it was but also because Oda did something I had never seen done so well before, bringing back a bunch of old villains and side characters and having them team up with our MC. Mix that in with the emotional drive of Luffy rushing and fighting to save his brother and the power of friendship on full display and you have this incredible start to one of the most epic sagas in anime. I can’t wait for your reactions to Marineford because holy crap, this was just the beginning. Great decision to take your time and savour it, watch the anime as well if you get a chance because the anime went off during this saga, the music and voice acting just makes everything more epic. And can’t wait for the next video!

I think it was very interesting of Oda to not only show queer resistance and joy in Impel Down but also to tie freedom of expression (and freedom to be who you truly are despite societal expectations) hand in hand with the larger freedoms the revolutionary army fights for. Having Ivankov be such an important figure in the Revolutionary Army really meant a lot to me and I'm very grateful for this arc. Also Buggy is my favorite fail son and I love how funny his entire storyline is here

14:25 Shiki, the Golden Lion. There's a "Chapter 0" about him, but I recommend you to read it after the next arc, so you can properly digest everything about him. There's also a movie called Strong World, that's mostly non-canon (except when they reference his time at Impel Down and stuff like that), with him as the main antagonist that you can watch with Chapter 0

Haki of ... King can also be translated as conqueror's haki which is more fitting, I think.

Now that you've read Impel Down I'd recommend reading One Piece Chapter 0: Strong World. It's included in the 3rd manga box set, or you can watch the animated version: One Piece Film: Strong World: Episode 0. It's canon to the One Piece world, and a prequel to the first One Piece 'Film': Strong World. There you get to see more of that 'golden lion pirate' you mentioned, which Oda made canon in the story. It's a great 10 minutes of multiple important characters in their younger days. Also, great you have uploaded again! Always enjoying your reactions and thoughts on this journey.

So, if you are reading the manga and have the boxset (I just got mine today for Impel Down after a decade of following online via leaks) then there should be a book titled 'Strong World' which is considered 'Episode Zero' of One Piece and sets up a few things from around Rogers Era. The movie itself is considered 'Plausibly canon' meaning the events aren't canon to the story but all characters are from the story. Another character fitting this would be Uta from FILM RED, the latest movie. I'm also of the opinion that Zephyr of Film Z and Gran Tesoro of Film Gold are also canon even if the events of the movies didn't take place

Welcome back! Another great vlog. One thing I want to say is the Haki you're talking about, Conqueror's Haki, as far as I know, it's not named after a specific character, that's just what it's called. I'll stop there, you'll learn more about it later. Yeah Impel Down was such a great arc, the entire Summit War Saga was amazing from beginning to end. And yeah if you haven't read Dante's Inferno definitely give it a read, I'm not much of a reader but even I enjoyed it. But in the story Dante explores each layer of Hell, each layer has a different punishment and each more severe than the previous floor based on the sins you committed. Back to Impel Down, I love the return of old favorite friends and villains! Crocodile, Mr 1, Mr 3, Bon Clay. Then new characters like Jimbei and Ivankov (yes you are correct on pronouncing EE-VA), and even Magellan and Hanyabal add so much to this arc. Now to answer your question about Shiki the Golden Lion. He is a canon character but as far as I know we don't see him in the series but rather in the movie Strong World. Which is an excellent movie by the way, highly recommend giving that a watch. I also recommend checking out the episodes that focus on the other Straw Hats, just so you can see in a little bit more detail what they're up to. They're usually half episodes like the first half focuses on Nami, and the second half focuses on Franky for example but I don't know if it's just a good way to get more context on their little adventures while Luffy is on his big adventure.

Captain John corpse is at Trillerbark too, as one of the General zombie. He wear the red coat and holding alcohol bottle if i'm not mistaken. In the cover story way back there is a story of how buggy getting arrested and end up in Impeldown, possibly related to this treasure he looking for.

The stuff with Shiki the Golden Lion (flying guy who escaped) was a tie in to the movie One Piece Film: Strong World. Unfortunately, the events of the movie are not canon, though Shiki does exist in the OP world as a canon character. Love your theories and watching your reactions. I would recommend watching all of marine ford, its possibly one of my favourite arcs to watch!! The pacing is amazing as well as the music and screen showing

A small thing about multiple devil fruits; it was mentioned in Enies Lobby (whn Kaku and Kalifa were being given there's) that its impossible for someone tovhave two devil fruits at the same time. Experiments show the individual literally expolodes as the two competing powers rip them aprt from the inside. Blackbeard's fruit is just the perfect counter to devil fruits.

You're knee deep in what a lot of people consider to be the absolute best extended stretch of one piece (myself included, Marineford stands pretty tall as my favorite arc) and I'm excited to see how you feel about it. Know you've got a lot on your plate and I wouldn't ever demand more, but I'm curious as to whether or not you're gonna consider watching and reviewing the rest of the Live Action now that you're past the point of any later-game spoilers (I promise that Garp is the only reveal they push forward!). I'd like to hear more takes on the series since I have fairly mixed-to-positive opinions on some of the changes in the back half of the season myself! EDIT: Oh, and speaking of the Golden Lion, he's a canonical character who has a non-canonical appearance in the One Piece Movie Strong World which I think is quite good and worth checking out! I believe it's on Netflix at the moment, along with my absolute favorite One Piece movie Film Z which I strongly recommend watching once you pass the Fishman Island arc. For a non-canonical villain, Z is a lowkey favorite of mine who stands up to some of the best in the series proper and I think Luffy's fight with him in the movie stacks up with some of the best final battles in the series proper.
