Something you might want to think about is letting someone else do the merch shopping for you (same with image searches if you do those), I know it sounds weird but with One Piece everything is basically a spoiler unless you're caught up weekly, and even then just existing on the internet might spoil you if you don't hurry to read the scans that's released a few days earlier than the official.

44:00 Another fun fact about Usopp that's well-known in the fandom: Uso means "lie" in Japanese. One of Aesop's Fables entails "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" (which you did technically reference in your discussion). Uso + Aesop = Usopp.

@@ralfsstuff I think "Suff" is simply easier to pronounce than "Sopp" in spanish. They also changed Zoro Roronoa to "Zorro Ronoa" for that reason. Even in Japanese, which is phonetically similar, they end Usopp as "Sopu". Maybe if the translators made the Aesopus conection, they would have gone in that direction, but it's hard to arrive at a name that keeps the pun and sounds natural.

my take why one piece felt simple in the beginning is because Oda made us follow the most simple minded character (not a simple character) one can imagine that is Luffy. In the end if Luffy doesn't care about something, subconsciously you wouldn't care about it either, and boy, he doesn't care about a lot of info.

I've recently rewatched Syrup Village and IT IS UNDERRATED. Kuro goal of assimilating in to the crowd and losing his pirate name, Luffy popping off at Kuro for a lack of respect for his crew, Usopp wanting to continue his lie of pirates coming to the village being a lie by protecting the village without their knowing, the Usopp pirates becoming dismembered - was all so good.

I think it’s better on the rewatch. It’s easy to feel like it’s a slow down run how much lore we got in orange town but when you aren’t thinking “come on get to the meat of the story” it’s much better. I disliked the arc at first but on my first rewatch of the show it became my favorite
@tintedpalette653
@tintedpalette653 Жыл бұрын
@@The_dandy_zombieI gotta agree, but I think it also comes down to how closely you’re reading/watching. When I watched the anime as a middle schooler, I thought Usopp did nothing helpful that arc and helped out of contrivance. Now that I’m doing my own reread, it’s clear that despite being cowardly, he has no hesitation to stand up when it involves the safety of others. This was even apparent in later arc as early as Arlong Park. He has a level of complexity to his approach to conflict compared to the main powerhouses of the crew, combined with his lofty lies, that makes it hard to appreciate the first time around. But what made Usopp great was always there, even before later arcs (that will not be named till they get to them).

People bate Usopp because of that arc and while I get his actions were poor, his feelings were justified and I get where his anger came from. People seem to hold his feelings over his head and that's not fair. But I also think that whole thing was good. The crew needs to learn how to handle stuff like that if they hope to stay together. Luffy and Usopp imo were both flawed but that's what makes it so good! I hope this doesn't give too much away. I rried to be as brief and un detailed as possible

In both of your defense, that Kuro/Morgans connection is SUPER subtle, and totally unconfirmed within the text, a theme with these types of "oh that's neat!" moments that Oda includes are often confirmed in the SBS pages in the collected volumes, where the man responds to readers' letters, and sometimes have crazy revelations that aren't plot critical and don't fit into the story, but are totally there in the background. So yes, it helps to slow down and pay attention, but also some of these you're not expected to get and aren't mission critical. Don't go crazy, Oda will overload you, but he'll never leave you out to dry if something is important.

Fun discussion. Looking forward to this journey. Loving the theories so far, I have more fun things to add to Usopp. "Uso" is Japanese for "lie" so his name is partly "liar" in addition to the Pinocchio reference. However, and this might be a coincidence or might might be on purpose, "Usopp" sounds similar to "Aesop" who wrote "Aesop's Fables" which is a series of short stories. We see Usopp in Syrup Village telling Kaya various random tales when we first meet him. Usopp is a multi-layered character, and I love it.

I don't see Kuina's death as being a suicide, largely because her promise with Zoro had reignited her drive to train with the sword and get better. And, while it is true that even people who are highly motivated and have goals can succumb to suicidal urges (depression and other forms of mental illness aren't logical), from a narrative perspective her death being a suicide after such a strong affirmation of her goal doesn't make sense. However, I do remember that the REASON she fell down the stairs was because she was trying to retrieve something (I think it may have been honing oil) to help maintain the Wado Ichimonji -- the white-sheathed katana. So if Zoro had never challenged her to a duel with live steel swords, she would not have had reason to go down those stairs.

I believe in the theory that her will/desire/dream was broken when she was told she will never be the greatest. The story puts a lot of emphasis on how the sword tests the holder, so it possibly killed her. It goes something like that, at least
@jeffreymeehan3567
@jeffreymeehan3567 Жыл бұрын
@orangecrix6 thing is, that was before the duel and was the setup of the conflict. The promise between her and Zoro was hmthe turning point and resolution to that inner conflict. You could tell that, when she made that promise, she had resolve in her eyes. And, since it was Zoro that helped her find that renewed resolve, Oda wasn't going to immediately undercut it by her resolve suddenly failing with no explanation or reason: that doesn't make sense from a narrative perspective.

It's so much fun listening to you discovering One Piece for the first time. i remember that first time and it did blow me away as well. It boggles the mind that there were, and still are people who don't want to get into One Piece because they look at the artwork and _literally_ judge a book by it's cover. What impresses me most about Eichiro Oda's writing is his storytelling and how he just foreshadows things waaaay before anyone even realizes. At some point you just start getting drawn in to analyze every panel.. because every little detail could mean anything in the future and it does so much for lore and worldbuilding. Even when you dislike a character at times, Oda is also really good in just showing where this character comes from and why they're the way they are. For instance, i didn't like Usopp either when i first started reading, but then you realize where he comes from, how he works as a character and what he strives to be. he's the "normal" man in a world full of crazy powers and batsh*t insane characters. He's a coward at heart but he grows beyond that. I really like him now, and that just shows Oda sensei's skills as an author.

Oh yes... More Nakamas... Bring them all! Its funny to see that a lot of One Piece fans are fans of Berserk too, like myself, I think most of us can relate about this, we get into One Piece because how different was from the main shounen arts.

I think family trees aren't necessarily a high priority to Oda in terms of storytelling (with some notable exceptions, no spoilers), but sometimes knowing a family tree can be spoilers, so I don't recommend looking into it even if you're curious.

Thing about Oda is that there are some mysteries in his story that are yet to be revealed, even some obscure stuff from random chapter in a random panel is apparently foreshadowing for something incredibly Major. Love the way he's written the story, even after a decade of reading and watching it's still so engaging. The most fun part about one piece is definitely the constant speculation and theory making

To give you a reference for this you know most mangas usually have some type of time skip about the time of the time skip you'll see something that foreshadows all the way back to the beginning of the East blue

Just a suggestion, but you may want to make chronological bullet points to talk about as you go through the story. Like: 1: Luffy eating and introducing devil fruits 2: Shanks 3: Kobe 4: Meeting Zoro the pirate hunter 5: axe hand Morgan 6: Freeing Zoro and Kobes bravery 7: Zoro joining the crew and how Kobe leaves 8: Buggys introduction I believe doing so will make things go smoother.

It’s always a treat to see people getting into this world of one piece. As someone who watched/read one piece for my whole life, i'm so happy that one piece is getting a lot of attention the past few years. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on the adventures ahead. I always Think of one piece as an adventure and a journey not just for luffy and the crew but also for us the readers/watchers because this story is filled with everything i wanted in a fantasy story. It can be funny and goffy but when the author wants, he can go dark and many things. So yeah i'm really glad you’re starting one piece and so far i'm happy you’re enjoying this, hoping no one will spoil you guys even tho it’s a bit hard to avoid spoilers for a story that has been going for YEARS.

18:55 So glad you are paying attention to the SBS section. Sometimes Oda reveals information there, or he adds details and elaborates more (in a way the normal flow of the dialogue among the characters on the panels wouldn't allow), and sometimes he just trolls people, and it's amazing!

One thing that I think would be cool to hear you two talk about when you finish East Blue, is that I think all,the pirate villains in thisbsaga are thematically connected. I think it's Oda's exploration of what makes a good pirate Buggy's lack of ambition, Alveda's, lack of vision, and Kuro's wish to remain anonymous being what I see as the first three.

This is going to be such a fun ride, dudes! One Piece is adventure with a grand A in my opinion, and despite some very few lows (probably due to reading it on a week to week basis for some arcs) it keeps on being amazing to this day. Shorts videos recording your reaction to Luffy's stupidest scenes (and there will be plenty, hahaha) !!

As far as Zoro's backstory, I dont think the tragedy has to come from Kuina self-deleting, even with her just falling down the stairs (while a bit ridiculous) is tragic, its like if a loved one you see everyday got into a car accident & died suddenly. Thats almost most heartbreaking than some whole grandiose thing IMO

The first few villains in these arcs do such a great job of setting the tone for the series. With a 1000+ chapter story, its hard to show how complex and varied the mood could be. But the combo of Buggy and Alvida showing how goofy it can be, and Morgan and Kuro showing that there can be some serious tones as well, its a great way to start out. Its clear within only a handful of chapters that theres going to be a lot of gray morality and conflict with both the pirates and the marines.

I love this video, yalls reactions and discussion about One Piece reminds me of 2 kids talking about their favorite series. This is another reason why I love One Piece so much on the surface it seems like a silly series about Pirates that you think it's meant for little kids but once you dive deep into it you realize there's so much more. Kids can enjoy it for how it fun and colorful it looks while adults can enjoy it for the story, character development, and world building. The fact that yall are talking about it with this much joy and still only discussing the beginning makes me excited for yall once yall start getting farther along. I'll be looking forward to yalls videos

Syrup village is definitely one of those arcs that's overshadowed by the others. I'd call syrup village the worst arc of one piece. Not because syrup village is bad, but because I think all other arcs are better. I'm happy to see some Jango love, though, but his inspiration is definitely Michael Jackson. He literally moonwalks on his introduction.

The falling down the stairs = self delete seems to be a fan made theory. I did some research on it awhile ago and could find no reference to that phrase being a thing in Japan and saw several Japanese fans deny that it ever meant that.

Just so you guys know basically every characters name has a quadruple entendre contained within it. As an example Usopp, in Japanese uso means “to lie”, then there is also Aesop the famous fairy tale writer who was the writer of “the boy who cried wolf” which is basically usopps story on syrup island . Put them together and you have a liar and a storyteller in a single name, which is exactly what usopp is.
