Classic example of where volunteers organisations are generally ran by poor management,I've experienced this on my volunteer trips,it's ppl who are willing to put life on hold and it's not the best person for the job at hand, also running it like a dictatorship and saying volunteers are easy to replace is a massive negative and good volunteers just move on as it not what they signed up for

Of all the videos of Sea Shepherd, this one is truly the most telling. The absolute lack of leadership and the complete disrespect towards the crew is not even acceptable for a highschool football team, let alone a ship of adults. The atmosphere is just toxic. If you can't treat fellow human beings that are willing to put their lives at stake for the greater good with the least amount of respect, how are you to be trusted saving animals. Absolutely pathetic. I donate quite a bit of money to charities like Greenpeace and such, but these clowns will never get a dime. What the fuck, really.

Yeah, I thought the "dry ship" request was actually really reasonable as well. But his communication skills are severly lacking. Here is what he said in a way that would show appreciation for the crew: "Okay, guys. Captains orders are that from this point on, no alcohol is to be consumed while at sea. I think this is a reasonable request after what happend last night. [show examples of impact to seaworthyness without pointing fingers, e.g. "Somehow one of the helicopter lights got damaged. This is a severe safety threat."] Should there be any questions about that, I'm happy to entertain them here with the group or individually in my cabin. The same goes for any personal grievances you might have. As the first officer I strive to be a mediator between captain and crew, so you will always have my ear should there be problems. Should you choose to depart for any reason in [port], please let me know."

You never celebrate while still out at sea. You keep a straight head at all times to make sure you can handle anything that could happen. I smoke a gaggle of green almost every day but minimum 2 days before getting on any boat i stop everything to get my head straight. Those that are drunk (on anything) while at sea are the main reason ships don’t make it back and are never seen again. If you and I ever end up on a boat out on the sea I hope i could count on you as much as I know you can count on me.

As a leader you can give bad news to your staff without demoralizing them through thoughtless delivery. Good leaders do their best to maintain morale while imposing new rules. You never want to tell your staff you don’t care what they think, aren’t interested in their comments or, they can be easily replaced. That’s just rude and ineffective leadership. In that situation, it’s the leader who should consider whether they’re in the right job.

Japanese education and western education as reflected in the cultures, are very different. Westerners, or perhaps the USA in particular, the expression of one's own thoughts and personality, generally is strongly emphasized and encouraged . In Japan, where I have lived for close to forty years, self restraint and minimizing one's self for the good off the group, is strongly accentuated, and so the group identity is propelled from a young age, as I can see it beginning when I observe the activity at a nursery school. Both ways have their good and bad aspects, and it certainly can apply to a work atmosphere where cooperation is a priority.

I'd leave too. These people are giving up their time and volunteering to help your organisation. They work hard and put their lives at risk. If you want it to be a dry ship then say so...but there is no need to take a wrecking ball to crew moral while you're doing it. I've worked at sea my whole life and I can tell you now, the autocratic way they manage the crew will find them running low on volunteers in the future!

I partly agree as well as disagree to this comment. Where I agree is that you need moral boosts every now and then but you cannot be stupid about it. Drinking alcohol and partying while being on duty is simply a dumb thing to do. To clarify, while working on a ship you're never off duty, you need to be able to handle any type of situation at all times. Had they been in port and were not to leave again anytime soon then it would have been an amazing opportunity to party it out and just release any pent-up energy you have

When they say no alcohol then they mean no alcohol. If you're not ready to agree to that and just complain about the lost opportunity in getting drunk then they really aren't needed on the ship. Best to get people on board that will both follow the rules and show actual dedication to the mission...With exception toward Peter Brown. That idiot was a known jinx all the way through. Whenever he was around something always went wrong and people got hurt. If I went on a ship/boat and found out he was on board then I'd turn tail and leave right away.

I'll leave the question of whether every crew member on board needs to be sober and alert at all times, even when returning to port, to those with experience at sea. The problem I see here is delivery of the message. Instead of a "we can do better than this" pep talk, Peter berates volunteers. Shape up or ship out. I went abroad as a volunteer when I was their age, and served with a leader who would berate the hell out of us at every staff meeting. Such treatment kills morale and lessons the effectiveness of the organization.

Zero respect for the crew. High turnover really shows their negligence towards safety. I don't know how someone doesn't die or is seriously injured every day on that unorganized operation.

A crew does matter. Without a crew you cannot defend your ship. These guys need to learn to appreciate the fact that they, EVERYONE make that ship work. Despite just getting new uneducated people. Makes way to much sense keeping the ones that know what there doing and just being nice would have kept them.

Maybe if they where paid like Paul who does, Peter Brown and 2nd, mate, everyone who believes they can help? They do get there meals a place to sleep, but look what they have to take, if your at a job, your boss would ever do, what they have to take, you tell your boss where to go,I don't have to take this, unless you like people telling crap behind your back, they get away with it they get paid anyway though, Not a way to run a ship, you must tell the crew all respect each other and tell all dry ship's, and I mean everyone! Sign a contract and stop what you think you doing, or you will have to start paying them!

This situation must be set up to be a clusterf--k. So, the "Captain" hides in his cabin and has his "officers" suggest no partying, then they don't intervene in the partying, and then they make important ship's rules announcements about partying. The captain is responsible for his ship and everything that goes on around and on it. He should be a major presence. Ship's discipline and activism aren't a good mix I guess. When you go through crews like most people go through clothes, maybe there is a problem. A successful command staff can't be passive-aggressive. A successful crew can't be either. I wonder what their death, injury, and loss records are?

What is wrong with not drinking alcohol? Why do people leave the ship, just because they are not allowed to drink alcohol? They can still drink water and other non-alcohol drinks on the ship. Alcohol is not important. The captain made a good rule.
