Knew a guy when I was a teen that was from a ‘ Mercury ‘ family ( his uncle had Mercury dealership ) he had a pretty cool Comet Caliente with 289 and he wanted to put headers on it. He special ordered headers to fit and then took about a week to get them in. He then proceeded to run them open for about a week. After a time he sold the Comet and got a 350 Chevy Nova with 4 speed which he was amazed at it was twice as powerful as his Comet. We were the neighborhood Chevy guys and he stopped by one day to ask us about putting headers on the Nova. We told him to go to the local well known speed shop and they should have them IN THE STORE. He didn’t believe us and then asked how long it should take and we told him a couple hours. He was like “ get outta town ! “ As I remember he had headers on the Nova the next day.

I had a 1964 Triumph Spitfire and lost the kill bolt while driving on the freeway, the road turned right and the car kept going straight! Luckily there was a very large grass medium between lanes and I was able to stop. I figured out what was going on and then spent the next 400 miles with downward pressure on the steering wheel to keep the steering shaft engaged with the rack and piñon. Got to my destination and 10 cents for a new bolt and nut and I was ready for the return trip.

If I had a dollar for every job I should have declined....I wouldn't have needed to work on anything! I've hung many an engine to change transmissions, rear crank seals, headers, rack and pinions, etc because the subframe was in the way. We do what we must, to either get a new customer, keep an old customer, or to just make payroll for the week. Book time is based on a clean, rust free vehicle and a mechanic with specialized training on that specific vehicle. You grab a fresh graduate out of ITT and throw them on a 40 year old Saab 900 and tell them to replace the clutch, and they will take 2 days to get the job done. Put me on the job and it will be done in an hour, with a half hour lunch break in the middle. Oil pan gasket on that 900? No problem! Leave the trans in the car and split the two. I've done it. Wait! Where's the parking brake located? On the FRONT wheels? And it's its own caliper? That's weird! That's Saab. The ignition switch is in the center console, between the seats? That's odd. Saab, again. Oh, the front of the engine is the back, too! Need to change the belts? You'll find them between the firewall and the engine. That's why the clutch is so easy. It's at the front of the car, the trans directly under, serving as the oil pan. You depress the clutch pedal, shim the pressure plate, remove the pilot shaft, unbolt the pressure plate and pull the disc and pressure plate out. You can pull the flywheel and resurface it, if needed, and reassemble. Here's a tip: the shift linkage is often short of full engagement for the reverse gear, leading to it popping out of gear. Adjust it before it rips the teeth of the edge of the gear. Not that anyone has a 900 anymore. 😅

Ray, I have a 1999 Mustang gt with 6000 original miles on it. Same colors as this one. It sat inside for the first 20 plus years of its life. I did the same exact install on mine last year. Did it almost the same way as you. You really don't have to remove the springs, They are pretty much captured there. I also left the rack in the car. Just popped it off of the k-frame, left the lines connected. Took me a weekend of 5-6 hour days. Oh by the way It was done on my back with the car on 4 jackstands. No fancy lift in the home shop. I am so glad that with only 6000 mi almost every bolt was clean and shiny so they came right out. If my bolts wee rusty like these it would have sucked much more. Once I came to the realization that the k-frame had to come out, it really wasn't that hard of a job.. Keep the great videos coming...

You have to watch out doing these custom jobs. You get it done and the customer tells hi as buddies it cost $XXXX to have headers put on his car and the next thing you know , Ray over charges for all his work. They don't know the work involved in doing the job because all they know is their buddy did it on a totally different car for a $100. There was a body shop here that was the best lacquer paint guy around. He was famous for doing hand rubbed laquer paint jobs on antique cars. This was back in the 1960s and 70s. Word got around that it cost over $3000 to get a paint job. That's almost $18000 in today's money. He lost regular customers because people thought it was going to bankrupt them to get their regular car fixed or touched up. He ended up no longer doing antique cars.

The problem I’ve experienced on, specifically the mustang, is they have nuts tack welded to the inside of the frame tube. It seems every time you have just a little rust on the bolt the nut weld breaks and you’re SOL!! Only repair is to using a hole saw, hold the nut, remove the bolt slightly then use the bolt to hold nut in position and weld the nut back in, then tack your hole back up. Pain in the arse!

There's No Such Thing As A Free Piano... A friend of a friend's wife was given a free piano... I was called to assess and help out after several failed attempts. The piano was on the 3rd floor of a 100 year ish older home that was renovated several times, meaning walls , doors were moved, big bedrooms were divided into two smaller ones etc... Long story short..... The piano had to be dismantled in order to get it down two flights of stairs and out of the home, by the time it was moved, reassembled, repairs made and the piano retuned..., it set the guy back a lot more than he anticipated.., he wasn't a happy camper after the ordeal. It was awful but got it down and set back back up without a scratch, then comes along a meathead helper with a tool hanging off his pocket and scratched it, a tiny scratch but that fussy woman immediately noticed it and flipped her lid. She made my life a living hell over it and after several failed attempts to repair it was just going to eat it and buy her a new piano but found this artist guy who blended it perfectly and made that demon woman happy, he was expensive but well worth it. For the love of Gawd, please use a set of outside spring compressors to put those springs back in. I learned the hard way, with a particular rear-motor Pontiac car while changing the lower control arms, that it's MUCH safer to have those on there when working with springs. Not nice when it flies out at you with force. Great videos, I look forward to them daily :)

Hey Ray, what a complicated header install. The car is in nice shape so I can see why he's spending the $ on it. Im looking forward to part 2. Cheers!

Hey Ray, you really need to get over your aversion to spring compressors. Properly used, they are a fantastic aid. Minimise stress on bushes, minimise risk of 'unscheduled spring tension liberation'.

I have found many things on the newer Mustangs require me to drop the subframe. Well, theoretically you can remove the EPAS without dropping the subframe on the base model, but good luck getting the mounting bolts out. The three bolts are lock-tighted in, you can’t get an impact wrench in there, there is only about 12-13 inches of lever arm room and no way to get a cheater bar on it and only about 15 degrees of lever room. You can fight it for hours or drop the subframe in about 45 minutes so you can get an impact wrench in.

Oyyyy!! I have done several of these and they are no fun. Plus , I live in Detroit, so everything is rusted in place. If you want a fluid free option, you can disconnect the tie rods, unbolt the rack and strap it out of the way toward the front. Just a option, either way, looking forward to the rest. Good luck Ray!👍👍

Yeah, I caught the issues you had on this from another video, I believe it was yesterday. A cousin of mine on his, I think 94, 95, or 96 like that went to a local shop friend to have the a/c discharged, went and put it in his little shop, removed the hood, unhooked everything, and lifted the engine up and replaced his with long tubes. It took over 2 days from start to finish, but when he had it done it sounded awesome. His had the 5.0 and he changed out the cam, rocker arms, and a few other things at the same time. He said he got over 150hp more out of it...not sure of that but he kept it for a whole 6 months before he traded it in for a 69 Camaro and dropped a 400 he was building into it and drag raced it for a few years. Anyway, I don't envy you on those Musty stanks....lol. Cheers,.

The background noise, coupled with the exhaust noise, when you were moving it into the shop almost sounded like a bottom end knock 😮😂
