I have worked on nasal breathing for the last 3 days, taping my mouth shut at night. 1. My sleep pattern has improved. 2. I was up before the alarm and get up. 3. I don't feel tired during the day. 4. Up and down 3 fights of stairs, no breathlessness. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it is making a difference to my life.

My cycling times have increased by listening to you.... I make sure i breath thru my nose and exhale. I went from 30 miles to 60 miles with lots of good energy left. When i climb a hill during this time i do the same and i find it much easier to climb when i relax...Thanks Patrick....

I’m taping my mouth every night now and my wife has noticed I don’t snore anymore, she also has started to tape up every night. You just have to get your conversations out of the way first!!🤗

PC LOAD LETTER you can buy them online but any light tape does just cut enough to tape the center of your mouth 👄

I feel breathless with taping my mouth during sleep esp in winters, as soon as I lie down on bed my nose gets blocked 😒

I asked fb who else taped their mouth and a friend thought it was preposterous and said I could die from congestion or food poisoning if I vomited in my sleep. What do you guys think?

Thank You Very Much !!! You solved my puzzle question which hinders me for so many years. I am 4 time cancer survivor. During my last cancer surgery recovery, one of the nurse told me that my oxygen intake is too low. She told me to breathe more. No doctor ever told me that in my 67 years. But, you have. Thank you very much. I now see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you. No one else has ever mentioned this to me in the way that you did. I often hear people saying to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, but never understood the difference - and so never took it seriously. I had always thought that the air went to the same place.

I'm a mouth-taper now too. I'm sleeping longer, feeling more benefit when I wake... without a dry mouth. I'm working on my slow inhalations ( 6 when I stopwatch it). Thank you so much for explaining things so simply for us. Bless you Patrick!

If breathing through my nose we easy I would do it more often! I've been following Dr. McKeown's advice for about a month now. But here I sit with a massive sinus congestion and can't pull any air through my nose except for about 3 minutes after I do his nasal decongestion method of holding my nose and breath while nodding my head. This technique works, but only for about 5-10 minutes, then I get congested again. I tape my mouth shut but rarely wake up still breathing through my nose. I also have really bad nasal collapse during physical exercise. I tried wearing breathe rite strips, silicone nasal expanders, and more. Still can't breath enough through my nose without super concentrated exertion. Even while sitting on my couch reading a book I have to really concentrate on pulling air through my nose. After a while I just give up bc its too much work. Like, I literally have to just sit and concentrate on physically pulling air through this tight valve. UPDATE 3 weeks later: My nearly life long symptoms of chronic rhinitis have nearly cleared up in the past 2 weeks without ANY medication!! What made the difference I think was passing above a 20 second BOLT score. My initial BOLT score was around 12 and now its above 20 after practicing the breath hold techniques outlined in the book for about 6 weeks! If my symptoms stay clear, I can absolutely attribute it to the Oxygen Advantage breathing techniques!! Thank you soooo much Dr. Patrick McKeown and Middle Finger to all the other Doctor's who suggested just taking a ton of drugs, allergy shots, and everything else that never worked. HAHA. I've become an Oxygen Advantage Evangelist now, I'm giving away about books to all my family members and friends.

I found that putting a slice or two of Lemon into water that has just boiled, letting it cool a bit & drinking it helps with congestion. This should be taken first thing in the morning.

Kevin Devine try an enzyme called Serrapeptese. You probably won’t get it in chemists or health food shops. You have to get it on the ‘net. Read up on it. I am an asthmatic and this enzyme taken strictly according to the instructions reduced my nighttime asthma.

Wow. Talk about the right resource at the right time. This explains so much for me. About a year ago I began a powerful body-focused meditation practice: Judith Blackstone’s Fundamental Awareness Process. Along with other notable positive effects, my breathing began slowing down more and more during meditation. Small, quiet diaphragm breaths with longer and longer intervals in between. Felt like I could just stop breathing. Pretty uncanny. At first this phenomenon happened only during meditation, but now it’s going cross platform. Under moderate exertion (like walking briskly up a hill) I’m beginning to be able to dial back my respiration. Just kinda happened the first time-a bit unsettling. Patrick Mckeown’s introduction to the O2 Advantage program explains what’s behind the breathing changes I’ve been experiencing. Look forward to diving in deeper. Thank you.

DJGrumpy! Have you ever tried the Silva Method for a meditation? I did it for years and quit because I got too busy. Helped with distance running. I’m back into it again! Deeper and deeper!

Was good to hear Wim Hof admit that whilst he recommends his own style of breathwork in the morning, that we should probably breath through our noses most of the day. Funnily enough that is what I've been doing for 2 years now. Took a while to adapt to nose breathing post exercise effort, but now it's become the most effective way to recover. Thank you sir 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Excellent information as I have been practicing to learn a deep breathing way of life. I am recently out of the hospital with congestive heart failure and acute anemia and so I need that oxygen.

Thank you SO MUCH for your help. My breathing is so poor.... Especially at NIGHT TIME. I awake at night time and notice, that I hardly breath at all😐 My poor heart has to work hard to move blood to get more oxygen from it... Because of anxiety, my nasal ways are very much narrowed. I am living in ‘freeze’ way!! (‘Fight, flight or freeze’) I have CFS, so, cannot do exercises🙄

A Natural process that sometimes we forget.. Thanks for the reminder.. Being n athlete and drummer.. we tend to have more exertion.. and often , esp when cycling.. you need to bring in more 02.. but sometimes in training one is not aware of the bad habits you pick up.. I have always been plagued by elevated stress levels..part if my type A personality..after reviewing this presentation..I again became more aware of my breathing patterns... Having just came off a bad case of Fauci flu..I went back to training regime.. this time with more breath focus..its amazing how just a simple thing can really make a difference.. IM also taking some supplements ...esp creatine...and beet juice.. keeping an exercise routine and I also play didjeeridu .. all make a big difference.. Many thanks.. Cheers Liam

Yes I have been a respiratory therapist and oxygen specialist for over 25 years and he is spot on. I'm also a retired drummer and I noticed that when I used to practice with my mouth closed and breathed through my nose it improved my breathing. This is due to the exertion force pushes more room O2 into the lungs which forces the expansion of the lungs in turn allowing the smaller air sacs to get air they would normally not

@@pabloblanco2656 Hey, I was an RT back in the 1970s. Will be seeing RTs next month after my open heart bypass surgery. Now I'll know how the ICU patients felt when I brought the IPPB machine to their bedside. I gave them a pillow or folded blanket to hold against their diaphragm for better breathing. Cheers, Bob

I would add one small aspect to this and that is the unconscious tendency of many of us to constantly tension the stomach muscles, specifically because we're ashamed of our gut/belly. It's a societal issue. But if your stomach muscles are tense, and in many ppl this is the situation 24/7 because the body shame is so deeply embedded in the psyche, your diaphragm will not move freely, you'll breathe via the upper chest, and that in turn leads to mouth breathing. It's a vicious circle that is not easy to break. Also, wearing restrictive clothing will interfere with deep breathing. The ironic thing is, sucking in your gut doesn't fool anyone but yourself. Just relax and accept your shape. You'll breathe better and feel better and that is what other people will notice about you 😊

My nasal passage is quite narrow, it gets blocked with mucous also. A life saver has been Neti with water and then after much hesitation I started doing sutra Neti. I decided to tackle my bad breathing technique a few days ago. Though I breathe by the nose I realised i was taking too many breaths per minute and I decided to lower this number. Watched a few videos to see whether I was on the right track, but this was the only one which answered my queries.

The netti pot was a life saver for me several years ago . In the mean time I have discovered my allergy to dairy was causing most of my problem. Dont need netti anymore. Am learning to use Patrick's closed mouth technique even while heavy exercise. Getting better. I have problems with small air sacs due to damage when I was a very young child. Bronchitis and pneumonia. At 71 I'm really getting better thanks to keto and trying to learn about food allergies.

I found you only a few days ago and you hit a bell for me - I am now finding I am focusing on breathing through the nose - its so clear I do not usually and I sometimes feel oxygen deprived or that I have not breathed in enough - but I am not backing away and opening my mouth - the bad habit will be broken. Thank you for the information - why isn't this given more air play and doctors not focusing on it?

been breathing through my nose ever since i first saw this video (about 2 years ago) and i have been feeling great ever since! Well, there has been one drawback... but maybe i shouldnt sa...I smell all the farts now. Mine, yours, that guy over there, his dog's... all of them. Anyway, thanks again for the tips! I have been meditating for years. Always breathing through the nose, when it was not congested ! I now slow the breaths down. 4 secs exhale and inhale. I can't testify to the claims about oxygen in the blood but it sure improves meditation. Go jogging regularly, would not call it running ! Find that breathing method is comfortable then and hopefully, doing me a bit more good. A lot of the comments refer to not finding it 'easy' when exercising. Since when was exercising supposed to be easy ? Difficult to tell from the posts just how much effort has been put into it ?

I TRY to race up my local hill, it requires 350 wats for 10 minutes....beathing and heart rate are at vo2 max...i dont have any control of anything at that level of exertion

I don't really know why but I always equated a deep breath with a full breath and I believe many people understand it this way. At least when you tell someone to take a deep breath they will usually take a hearty inhale through their mouth in the upper chest. Even with mouth closed or Even when using diaphragm most people will equate deep with full. I only now start to understand that by deep you actually mean the bottom part of the body which has nothing to do with taking a full breath. Even as a non-native English speaker I am pretty sure 'deep' is a somewhat ambiguous word in this regard and it should simply be described by breathing with the diaphragm or "into the belly". Imo you should emphasize more that a deep breath has absolutely nothing to do with volume and that a deep breath can still be done with low volume. Just my opinion.

Patrick I’m doing the oxygen advantage classes! What causes lung burning and pain under the ribs and to mid back area, after long Covid issues. The pain is unbearable when I get flares.

This is coherent breathing which can be quite impactful for HRV. Understand on breathing in thru the nose but what about exhalation. My experience thru HRV is that HRV improves thru the mouth. Thoughts?

It certainly can John, That's why we advise daily nose breathing exercises to train the body to breathe through the nose permanently. We also have exercises to unblock the nose quickly, (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbtkn9Zm0NuYgps.html) but for long term change, daily exercises and breathing through the nose as much as possible is the way to go.

Hello I'm living here in Denver and having severe muscle cramping anytime I exercise and when I check my blood oxygen is around 93. Any thoughts about living at 5,000 square feet and intense muscle cramps?

Hi Patrick, Thank you for all the infos, I've been sleeping few months with Mouth tapping. And was wondering, as I am most of the time home, while watching TV, can I also mouth tape in order to breathe through my nose only? And, am about to start walking exercise, to loose weight, does this mean also breathing through nose only? Thanks a lot!!

While awake you needn't tape your mouth shut. You keep it shut by being mindful to breath thru your nose. Eventually it replaces the habit that isn't ideal with the one that is.

Patrick, do you need to have music in the background? It's so nice and relaxing to hear your gentle, soothing voice. The music could be more helpful. It isn't very pleasant. I consider your knowledge and guidelines so important that I must put it with disturbing music.

Greetings, Patrick. I'm scheduled for an open heart triple bypass in 2 weeks. I found you on KZfaq and then bought your book The Oxygen Advantage. I've been nasal breathing since then and also most of the sleeping time. Here's my question: I want to increase the PO2 that goes into my heart as my 3 coronary vessels are 90%+ blocked. So, the heart is receiving less (a lot less) oxygenated blood. By doing the 6 breaths/minute and breath holds, will it jack up the PO2 of the heart blood? I figure a higher amount of oxygenated blood into my poor heart will help a lot. I was getting Angina attacks just with walking 50 feet. Since then, I practice the long, slow diaphragmatic breathing and 6 second breath hold when doing anything but sitting down. Thanks for all you do! Cheers, Bob (from Syracuse, NY).

At rest I generally nose breathe naturally. I'm a runner and I cannot nose breathe when running. I just cannot get enough air in and have to mouth breathe. Any tips?

I can breathe though my nose with difficulty due to a deviated nasal septum. Unconsciously, I tend to breathe through my mouth. How does one not mouth-breathe at night?

Can I incorporate breath holding into more weighted intense exercise, such as boxing? Example, 10 to 15 minutes into my shadow boxing, I exhale and hold your breath (using nose clip), I do 10 to 40 reps of 5-lb dumbbell punching, following the breath hold, I continue to shadow box with nose breathing for about 1 minute, until my breathing has partially recovered.

Yes, of course, You can incorporate breath holding on the exhale into the above. That works too.

@@scarred10 This is not about the Buteyko Method. This is about nasal breathing, functional breathing, cadence breathing. Look to the evidence of the functionals of the nose, bohr effect, heart rate variability- 5.5/6 breaths per minute. This is what I teach.

Thank you for the video. Listening to all that yo said, all the benefits that you are speaking about are happening when one inhales through the nose. But what about exhalation- should this also be done through the nose? Or can I exhale through the mouth? The nitric oxide benefit is only happening in inhalation anyway, but in regards to the diaphragm- does exhaling through the mouth will involve the diaphragm less then the nose?

Hi Raaya. Exhalation through the nose helps recover moisture and heat from the exhaled breath. There is a 42% greater water loss exhalaing through the mouth. You should nasal breathe all time. Breathing through your nose facilitates the transfer of nitric oxide from the nostrils to the lungs. Nitric oxide is a naturally occurring gas which has a significant effect on many bodily functions, including the reversal of the build up of cholesterol and plaque in the blood vessels. Breathing gently and slowly through the nose allows greater concentrations of nitric oxide to be picked up by the incoming air for improved blood circulation as well as airway dilation. As you soften your breathing with a slow breath in and a gentle, relaxed breath out, the gases nitric oxide and carbon dioxide will open your airways and blood vessels, allowing more circulating oxygen and improved oxygen delivery to your tissues and organs including the heart and brain.

Exercises to strengthen the diaphragm can make the muscle feel tired but make sure you don't push too hard too early. Take things gradually.
