The Wifi thing is something you can avoid so many issues with, when done properly. What I did with my OpenWRT powered router is configure the 2.4 GHz wifi on channel 13. As it seems absolutely nobody is using that channel. That is probably because it is a channel allowed in the EU regulations but not in North American regulations, so most routers are more restricted than they have to be here. This is also a channel that is not overlapping with the standard Zigbee channels configured by most devices.

I'm not quite sure that I agree to move away from RPi. I definately would not use RPi with SD card, but RPi with SSD seems to be just fine for me. I'm barely using 10% of the CPU, so I think it has enough power for some time. Maybe this will change if I keep adding lots of more stuff, but for now it works just fine. Backup is one of the first things I set up.

On point Will, and never forget WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) if you break it too oftern she isn't going to be a happy lady.

Very true, although I prefer the FFAF (family and friends approval factor) as it’s not necessarily just the wife who will be annoyed!

Good video, I agree with most of your points but I am afraid I disagree with the first one regarding the Raspberry Pi, all my issues with the SD card went away a long time ago with a simple option for "recorder" in the config file: "commit_interval: 30". This option makes Home Assistant to write logs to the SD card every 30 seconds instead of every time an event happens (which is the reason the SD card dies so often). Over a year now with the same SD card with no issues at all. In my opinion Raspberry Pi is the best option for Home Assistant as it is the cheapest and most efficient computer you can have, currently I have the Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB of RAM and it is totally capable of managing my setup, and believe me it is not a small setup (over 60 wifi devices + 40 zigbee devices, and hundreds of automations)

An SSD is a good idea. And it’s probably also a good idea to use a longer commit interval for the recorder. Commuting every minute instead of every second reduces the stress for the SD Card / SSD significantly. But why ditch the PI? I sit at 7% CPU usage… Also don’t split your SSID in to 2.4 and 5 GHz. Your 5 GHz need a fallback once in a while, especially If you are close to a harbour or Airport… Any kind of Radar will make your router to shut down the 5 GHz network. Also be aware, that the Conbee Zigbee Stick will have issues in combination with an PI/SSD. You’ll need a very long cable for that setup. ..

Very good points. I would add one more: set up monitoring and maintenance. Monitoring for CPU temperature, CPU load, free storage, ... Maintenance: quarterly update of addons, hacs, core, ..., Clean up file system, check backups, ....

yeh theres nothing wrong with the pi, if you have an SSD

What about the power consumption of a dedicated server compared to the pi? I don't think ditching the pi is the right choice for a lot of people (SSD is a must)

I use an all in one mobo and processor. It uses a low power consumption processor. Think its about 9w if I rememeber correctly. Runs everything, NAS, Home Assistant, Plex, Adguard

A full blown server will use a fair amount of power, but a nuc or similar won’t be much - to be honest I don’t know the last time I turned my desktop off, so it’s basically the same as that!

I have an older i5 Lenovo Tiny. Idles at about 8w (Running the NUC image) - boosts to 12w if it's doing anything with Frigate, this will drop to around 9-10 once I set up my Coral stick. The Tiny only cost £80 posted too. i5 Dual core (mobile style chip), 8gb Ram, SSD.

Look at a Ultra Sff i8 8100T, 8-16GB ram + ssd will give you a fast, low power system for 24/7 use.

Been using a NUC for over a year with no reliably issues. It’s an old one which was second hand and cheap with a 2nd gen i5 and msata internal SSD. More than enough for HA, the Pi4 just wasn’t cutting it.

I cant ditch my Pi cuz i am running HASS-OS, might try the external boot method but, as it stands right now its working without a problem.
@metalwolfy82

I ditched HASS-OS because it was really unreliable for me and moved to raspbian HA Supverised. Either way moving to an SSD makes everything much quicker and lets you use mariadb to store the entity history. Just make sure you get an SSD case that people have tested on pi and one that supports UASP.

Excellent videos! I have a request- Can you make a video showing exactly how media players work? I'm having some trouble understanding the media player/speaker relationship and playing music from a source. Specifically, if you know, I'd love to know how to play SiriusXM channels or Apple Music to a media player.
@WillSurridgeTech
@WillSurridgeTech 3 жыл бұрын
Media players are a bit complicated, because there is no decent link between the media player (speaker) and the source - I use sonos, which means you have to add the source to your my sonos library (on the sonos app) before you can then select it in HA

Good advice. I'm using a USB extension cable for my HUSBZB-1 zigbee stick, but they are not reliable. Is there something I should be doing in HA to organize the clusters or groups? Under the Visualization tab we can see how all the devices interact with each other... is there a way to improve the inter-connections?

the best way is to get router devices and place them around the house - things like smart plugs or light bulbs, as they add to the mesh capabilities
