Hi everyone - so excited about this breakdown! I'm looking at how President Obama uses specific cues to change the way he communicates. We're not looking at politics, programs, or legacies. I hope you're open to learning some new skills from an important public figure -- whether or not you agree with what they're saying! Let's keep our minds open to learning.

Also the upward inflection sounds more begging or submissive. For example (read this in upward), “this is an enormous opportunity for us!” sounds betting compared to (read in downward) “this is an enormous opportunity for us” which’s kinda authoritative

Great info Vanessa! It got me thinking about our positioning during video calls - and how too much downward (looking down into the camera) could be a bad thing. It's better to be level with the camera. If you are standing up and looking down into the camera it could appear too competitive or not on the "same level playing field" when talking to others.

Excellent instruction and, for some reason, what popped into my mind, was the 2009 Star Trek reboot movie. Early in the film, we see the boy, Kirk stealing a corvette and racing down the highway. A police officer pulls along side him and, in a very authoritative voice, says, "Citizen, pull over." I noted the authoritative "DOWN" mode in the officer's voice. (not sure I thought about it before) Long story, short~when he finally catches up to the boy, he asks a question~"Citizen, what is your name". What intrigues me, now that I think about it is; normally, in asking a question, one goes up at the end. But, in this instance, given the authority which the officer possessed, he was not "ASKING". He was demanding the name, BUT, he seemed to soften the demand in making it a question, while still going DOWN, vocally, at the end, there by emphasizing his authority. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kK91nMmru9jJmnk.html Check it out, see if I am making sense. I have your first book. I will buy your second when I finish this one. Thank you so much for what you do

What a wonderful and informative video! 🙂 I noticed and appreciated Obama’s speaking style from the beginning. The pauses and slower speaking attracts attention most to me. I noticed less of the physical gestures. You see that he really thinks about what he will say and means it. So, so unlike the president after him 🙁 Vanessa, I’d like to see you analyze Trump’s style.

Excellent video on using performance and characterization to generate importance and move action. Both character selections are great. Unfortunately, Obama is still too recent a political figure for many people to focus on your message, as evidence by some of the comments here. Also, it would be a stronger lesson in the future to refer to the character of "Cher" than to refer to Alicia Silverstone, since they are very different persona and it demonstrates how Silverstone used those techniques you describe to transmit that character's persona (which changes through realization in the final scenes of the film).

I have a request! I would love to see you doing more videos but *also* focused on women, in the sense of charming/charismatic women, funny women powerful voice tone, intriguing, etc. I know it might be the same but at same time I wonder about the little things that might make us perceive something distinctly. And I too believe it would be so interesting if you could not only study "american" figures but also other culture figures. Because every culture has it je ne sais quoi, but at the same we all have the same human expressions, and that makes it all more amazing. I also find it so peculiar, why do accents sound so sexy, funny or interesting as well.. too many things I know ahaha. So, I'll give an example Iike Penelope Cruz. I would really appreciate it if one of this suggestions could be answered :) Thank you so much for sharing your brilliant insights with us! It has been such a pleasent and powerful process to witness your work and journey! So many great and useful things to learn and incorporate in our dailylife to better understand ourselves and the people around us!

At approximately 12:50 in this video, you were addressing Obama;s hand gestures, specifically when he pressed his index finger and thumb together. You referred to it as a modified "thumbs up". Not to be argumentative, but I believe it's a modification of an even more authoritarian hand gesture, an extended index finger. Pointing, in this western culture, is generally considered rude. Watch and listen to his speech when he uses that hand gesture, visualizing him thrusting his index finger (not at nobody in particular) to drive home the point he's making.

Although I do understand the point you age trying to express here, there is so much lost in presentation. First and foremost, you are examining the speech pattern and inflection of a real person. A person who held the most important job in the in the United States, and arguably the world. The second is a fictitious character. This person is playing a caricature of the ditzy, Southern California “valley girl”. When Obama (or any President for that matter) spoke, for better or worse, people listened. Silverstone is literally “Clueless” in that role. The content of this video is valid and could help a lot of people. However, between your (self described) terrible and ongoing impressions, combined with a poor comparison choice it gets so muddied.
