Each month The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) hosts a Meet the Scientist Webinar featuring a researcher discussing the latest findings related to mental illness.
In November, 2017, BBRF featured the research of Dr. Stephen R. Marder of the University of California, Los Angeles. He presented RESEARCH UPDATES: IMPROVING FUNCTIONING IN SCHIZOPHRENIA?
Dr. Marder discussed how patients with psychotic illnesses are usually interested in treatments that relieve active symptoms and improve their abilities to function at work, school, and in their everyday lives. He provided an overview of recent research on pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to improving functioning.

Some patients symptoms at some point become so extreme that they end up being heavily sedated. During this time they may not be able to physically move nor even speak due to the strength of the medication. All mental thinking is brought down to being just barely active and is extremely strenuous. At the same time, the "voices" become much quieter. However, the voices are just as 100 % active as one would expect a fully functional mind should make them, meaning they have changed in no way at all other than in the volume level. Other schizophrenics whose voices have faded over time due to having taken their meds, also report that the voices changed in no way at all other than a reduction of volume. Another patient suffered to such a degree that this led him to having lost 3 weeks of sleep. This even led to heart palpitations. In this case as well, the person was completely physically and mentally drained. Yet, the "voices" were in no way altered, but were still 100% as active as previously being, each still being full of life and energy.
