You talking about how people don't like to question care standards really hit home for me. At one point, I was doing research into potentially doing a bioactive hamster cage. I'd heard of people doing it for hedgehogs and rats and I could see many benefits to it. However, when I reached out on a forum to ask for people's opinions, I was met with a lot of backlash, much of which was completely uninformed. I eventually came to my own conclusion that I wouldn't try it as it would mean the cuc would be unlikely to thrive, and although they're "just bugs," I still care about their wellbeing. The point is, I feel that people should be more open minded. After all, our husbandry cannot progress without a certain level of experimentation.

This video was so needed in the invert community. I love my mini beasts, however I really do think that reptile keepers should also watch this. Many keep feeder insects in such horrible ways. I actually get more enjoyment from watching my invertebrate pets living naturalist enclosures. I prefer knowing even feeder insects get to lead a fulfilling life, surely they would be better for their reptiles in the long run. Thank you for this video and also loving inverts. My daughter's love watching you as do I. There certainly is a a massive gap of missing information available on good care needs. I totally agree with you.

When I started to keep snails when I was younger I could barely find any info. Your channel as made me improve my care a lot and this video is a great discussion to keep improving our care of the animals we love. Years ago loose substrate was so contraversial with reptiles and now it has changed completly. So glad youre pushing the boundaries and providing all these sources where we can learn from ty 😊

This was so interesting, thank you for talking about this! I've been looking into getting a UVB bulb for my praying mantis enclosure, prompted by the fact that the plants I have inside keep dying and I think the main reason is that they lack proper lighting, and it made me wonder if I was harming my mantis by not providing her with light... and I could find almost no information about how to light a mantis enclosure, and any info I did find was so conflicting and/or confusing!! I feel like that is the main problem with this issue, there is just not enough information or research into the subject, and we are all going on each other's opinions/observations and it can be really difficult to put your own thoughts together to figure out who to believe.

Hey! Thanks 😊 So for plants, UVB is a different wavelength to what they really utilise. Instead, LEDs are probably best which is measured in Kelvins (2,700-7,000) is natural daylight. But UVB is just a small percentage of what’s given off, so it can still slightly help shade tolerant plants but not those that need high intensity 😄 The mantis itself doesn’t really need any lights for basking purposes, normal light from a window into a room will provide plenty of brightness for a day night cycle to take place. But the UVB bulb may be the beneficial thing for the mantis 🙂

I feel like a lot of animals could benefit from uvb especially! Even mammals some disagree with letting rabbits out into the garden and keep them inside all the time, but I do think the sunlight makes them happier they just seem more energised!
@jadesjungle
@jadesjungle 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes absolutely! I passively mentioned at some point in the video that it’s recommended that guinea pigs have some, as they benefit from artificial lighting/ UVB because of the high altitude they come from. I forgot to link it but it’s “UVB advice for small mammals” it’s like a little veterinarian summary paper thing, with other references they used for additional reading. It’s very interesting. I understand that people want their pets “safe and indoors as part of the family” but even as a normal loved family people get to go outside or to the park etc 😂 we wouldn’t lock our kids inside because they may potentially be hit by a car, for example. Sitting outside with my pets or providing secure and appropriate accommodation really does take away any of the worry of danger and I always highly recommend any animals get outside pen time if it’s possible to do for them 😀

Hi jade. You know the tank you have upgraded your snails into? How do you keep it humid as I struggle to keep in the head because it's glass.
@jadesjungle
@jadesjungle 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know, I never struggled with it being not humid enough. It was actually so humid that the doors were constantly fogged up 🙄 I ended up putting them back into their 80L storage box in my last video, as I couldn’t see into the tank anyway 😅

Here my forts on lightning and hearing for snail . I do think some form of lighting would benefit the snails on a hole given there shells would absorb some light to a degree . Having looked at the 3 types of snails i own and where they come from it would seem they do get moring and late evening sunlight . Iv been looking into this alot seeing what lights are out there looking at the heat they give off and am yet to come across a light that dosnt give of too much heat and pose a risk to my snails . What is your opinion on heating cables over heat mats ? What is your opinion on a plant light so they would get sone form of light? Iv also been looking at misting machine the timers are not that good and it would quickly flood the substrate so you would have to use faults floor with a tap to drain seem like it would be needed agaim not very usefull if your snail dig a lot . Sorry about my rambling
@jadesjungle
@jadesjungle 3 жыл бұрын
So the UVB light actually doesn’t give off heat, it may give off a little bit (mild warmth potentially but not enough to warm the enclosure or burn the snail) but you can always buy a guard to go around one so they couldn’t contact it anyway (recommended if they can reach it, which snails will), or it will be above the enclosure with a mesh lid so they can’t contact it anyway. The light you may be looking at is a basking bulb which does give off lots of heat, this is connected to a dimmer stat so it will be controlled to the correct and safe temperature, again a guard will be round it for snails if it’s in the enclosure as they could contact it, or over mesh on top would be fine. Then for plants, LEDs are best again, they don’t give off any heat and I’ve used with my snails yes 😊 helped the plants but won’t do anything for the snails. They’re in a room where natural daylight can provide a day/ night cycle (which is just where they know it’s daytime or not, if in an opaque box or a room without a window, you’ll need the light to signify this). Misting machines have lots of brands and you can usually set it on a timer to run for a minute or so, this could be too much but an easy fix is to buy a seporate timer which does seconds instead for the ideal amount. You can add a drainage layer to absolutely make sure you don’t saturate the soil, particularly valuable for an automated system when you’re not in control, but most people are comfortable to do it by eye and not need one. It’s separated by a drainage mesh or fleece, so even when egg checking you shouldn’t disturb the hydroballs in the drainage or anything 😃 Heat cable is basically the same as a heat mat, so my same opinion on heat mats stands. I’ve never used cable though so I might be wrong. hope that answered all your queries!

@@jadesjungle thank you for reply some really good points there . Were my snails are its dark not much on the way of a day night or light alltogether . So am thinking i need some form of light but am worried i would end up cooking them .

this video really helped me to know how to upgrade my snails so that they live a happier life. I saw in one of your other videos that you feed your snails oranges sometimes but I was under the impression that they can't have citrus? Do you know any info about that? Also I have my snails in a bioactive set up and springtails climb all over them when they eat. Is this ok? or should I try and move them to a set up with only isopods? I love your channel. If you don't know the answer to any of these questions thats ok
@jadesjungle
@jadesjungle 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thank you so much 😊 So the reason people say not to feed orange is that citrus fruits are acidic and will harm/ burn the snail. This is a misconception as other fruits such as apples, tomatoes and peaches have a similar acidity and they’re all perfectly safe! Mine absolutely love it and will readily dig in 😄 As for the springtails, they are fine, snails are surrounded by these critters even outside (probably a much bigger variety) and co-exist well). They can go on the lid if they want to get out the way of Isopods too, who can’t climb ☺️

Hi Jade I'm wondering why you don't keep any arboreal tranauala . Really like this video btw
@jadesjungle
@jadesjungle 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I do like some species (I love a whole load of tarantulas, I could seriously see myself being like one of those people who have 100 😅). I have other projects I would also like to do, so for me I am very selective about what I will want to keep for the future. Instead of lots of tarantulas for display I’d probably like a couple reptiles etc but am limited on space, so it’s one or the other. I have plans to get more slings once my males mature, find a home with a lady for them, and I have space for some new babies 😄 C. Versicolor and A. Avicularia will probably be the arboreal ones I will drift towards. Over time I’ve realised I like ones which are calmer tempered and may be docile enough to use to educate people 🙂 I enjoy my OBT but I wouldn’t necessarily want more old worlds that I don’t ever really see
