In this video I am building and demonstrating an extra tool which you can use along with your existing stitching pony to help with hand stitching large or awkward items. I think this works well so feel free to give it a go if you think it will help you!

Hi everyone, here's a new video showing how to make an additional tool which you can use with your stitching pony to help when stitching awkward items. There will be another video coming at the weekend too, Ian.

Brilliant! Sometimes the simple solutions are the best and you have proven it. I think what I admire most about you is your attention to details. Your insistence on having flush edges for example. In the scheme of things it makes no difference but in regards to the pride you have in your craftsmanship it’s everything. Someone buying something from you can be ABSOLUTELY certain that it was made with the very highest level of craftsmanship and expertise. Huge fan of yours.

EXACTLY what I needed to see! I'm about to attempt restoring what was my dad's "made-by-him" briefcase of some 50+/- years old. Most of the machine double stitching has dry-rotted, and I've JJ #2 needles and .8mm thread on order (I already have Tandy diamond chisels and leather dye). You "beat me to the punch" on coming up with a solution for steadying the briefcase while stitching. Thanks!

Great idea, Ian! This is cheap and easy enough to make several different lengths so you can grab the right one depending on your project of the moment. Fantastic!!!

Clever. Necessity is the mother of all invention. I want to make a clamp that is mostly away from the edge of the bench. Only the contact points are close. A reverse scissors kind of deal. The mechanism for closing the clamp is a foot away from the work. Still working on it.

Awesome idea!! I always struggled with the little 3 inch jaws of the stitching pony. This is the way they should make them from the factory. I mean who really only stiches something 3 inches wide. No one. Thanks for your video's , good to see you back.

just depends what you're making, they work fine as they are for lots of things but they don't suit every scenario which this aims to help with

Excellent work Ian. Great instructional tutorials. I make whips and other plated items because I hate sewing also but I might have to get around it and try forming and stitching. BTW Great family name.

A neat proof of concept, which could also lead to modifications (as you suggested in a lower third comment), which could add more stability to your "extend-a-jaw". I have missed your teaching videos and by definition you. I wish you good health and a welcome back.

I really like the idea. What about adding strong magnets along the arms that will hold the piece in place? That way, the clamps aren't in the way. Also, could extend the piece that sticks in the pony down and use some screws or bolts to help prevent whole thing from tipping over. Think I'm going to try that.

Hi Ian, I'm very new to leather working. Your pony is only 3 or so inches wide, would a 6 inch wide pony be too much? I notice a lot of folks using spring clamps as opposed to a bolt and wingnut option, can you give me your thoughts? I think the extension that you made makes perfect sense. So, thank um you for making these videos I really do get a lot out of them..

Hi Ian thanks for the idea, just a thought what if you cut out a grove in the wood to recess the hinge in it then I think the wood pieces would sit flush with one and another.
@Leodis.Leather

well you want a gap in there as that's where the leather goes, so it helps them to clamp along the length of the item
