Keith and Kristyn Getty visited The Babylon Bee to talk about good music that builds up the Church, really good Irish jokes, and what it was like to see Satan at the Grammys. They react to worship leader headlines from The Babylon Bee and that time The Babylon Bee inspired them to write a song that rhymed with 'substitutionary atonement'. The Gettys surprise The Bee with a live concert of In Christ Alone!

It's easy to think In Christ Alone is classic OLD hymn because it aids so well right next to the best classic old hymns. It's uncommon today for a new hymn to fit so well with the classics.

Fun conversation. I don't think I'll ever forget singing "In Christ Alone" as our church concluded the book of Revelation. Someday we're going to praise him forevermore. Amazing.

I love the song, In Christ Alone! I’m always surprised when I hear a great, old-sounding hymn, then find out it was written recently. (For example, When I Go Home, by G. Michael Eldridge.) I’ve heard Andy and Rachel Leftwich sing “In Christ Alone” many times, and a group at my church sings it. I’m a Baptist, but I love that it’s loved by many denominations - I was totally surprised when at a wedding for my brother’s colleague and they had everyone sing it together.

I must that the Getty’s. In Christ Alone was the perfect song for us to have at my Mom’s memorial service. It was the anthem of her life spent committed to her Lord. Honestly I believe it should be the anthem for every believer. Thank you so very much

@@georgewagner7787 dont cast pearls before swine and dont answer fools to their folly, i wrote an entire response and walked away to find out that it did not send and and disappeared i suppose that God wanted it that way. this person is not genuinely asking why Christianity is real; they dont care about facts, just feelings. they dont care that Jesus' life was one hundred percent verified; they dont care that everything that the Bible says happened to Jesus was true and verified; they dont care to see the obvious evil in this world and find the absolute good; they dont care to forsake sin and turn to God. ultimately, these people are stumbling blocks, wolves wearing sheeps clothes. they do not care about any answer that you give them. Jesus was born, lived and died and it is undisputed even in the secular world, the rest of it is confidence, faith, you know, the faith you have in knowing that anything else is real whether it be space, math, gravity, the north pole, the actual earth its self, we have faith that these things are real based on our experiences and the great mind that God gave us in order to be part of this whole thing. everything in this world works in a very specific way that is absolute. there is a creation then therefore there is creator. nothing we say or do is going to get this person to realize anything; they have to genuinely want to know. You cant force anyone to learn or know any kind of knowledge and if they want to live in the bliss of their own ignorance then they will be sadly mistaken when that bliss doesnt last long. idk about you but there is no penalty in believing a fairy tail but there is a huge penalty in ignoring the truth and i would rather not spend my life here or eternally separated from God. this is clownworld my friend and this person is clearly a clown. no normal, sane person would go to a Christian page and poke and mock those people. i hope we dont go into their dens of emaciation and do the same because it truly is futile as they are all fools full of folly and they can not hear with all the noise each of them make as they cackle their way to outer darkness.

A favorite memory with the Gettys, was going to a Christmas concert 10+ years ago with friends who were a little cautious when the saw drums in church, to lighten the mood, when Keith introduced the fiddle player by saying she looks like Barbie, and plays the fiddle like it's on fire, I leaned over to my friend and said "that's funny because I used to light Barbies on fire"

In Christ Alone - yes, a great tune, but the poetic theological content (that everyone seems so excited about) is the work of Stuart Townend. I'm surprised that he gets zero recognition here. Indeed, much of the Gettys' foundational output was a collaboration with Townend. From wikipedia ... "In Christ Alone" is a popular modern Christian song written by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend, both songwriters of Christian hymns and contemporary worship music in the United Kingdom. The song, with a strong Irish melody, is the first hymn they penned together. The music was by Getty and the original lyrics by Townend. It was composed in 2001.

Vocal fry is when your vocal chords are slapping together instead of vibrating freely, and gives a very textured sound. It usually happens in your lower register because your vocal chords have to be loose to do it.

"Hymnody recapitulates doctrine." Or it should. If the hymnody is weak, the expression may be bad, or it might be that the doctrine is weak. It sounds like these hymns are reversing the process; good hymns forcing good study of scripture which leads to good doctrine. An old song: "On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand..."

I really really dislike the contemporary music. My church keeps asking me to join the choir and I really have no interest because I don’t want to bother telling them we should sing out of the hymnals that sit unused in the pews

Well, I'm in sort of an opposite congregation. We have hymnals. The newest song is close to 20 years. And most "new" songs are 30-40 years. There area few of those but most are way older. The problem is they're expensive and so you can't get any new songs for years, if not decades. The Bible says to sing unto the Lord a new song. And, just because they're in hymnal doesn't mean they're always sound. Newer songs are also often more appealing to younger people. The songs in hymnbooks were new at one time. Ironically, my favorite ones are the old classics. The last 100 years are my least favorite. The newer songs touch my heart. So many of the old ones are just dry to me. So to each his own. But it's not a right or wrong, but preference.

@@andrealmoseley6575 Why are new songs appealing to younger people?
@digitalnomad9985

@@andrealmoseley6575 "Newer songs are also often more appealing to younger people." Well that's the theory, but has anybody ever focus grouped this? Depth is HARD and therefore rare. Less depth is a logical result of pitching out the hymnbook. The hymnbook has songs from a thousand years ago all the way up to contemporary. I once read the credit line to "Shepherd of our Impatient Youth" and the lyrics were attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux, circa 400 AD, not to mention the Psalm adaptations. Some of them were set to tunes by Bach and Beethoven and Luther and every age in between, up to Dottie Rambo and the Gaithers. From each generation, a few of the songs sung then made the grade and were added to the hymnal. That is the way each generation handled it as far back as there were hymnals, incorporating the best of the new and preserving the best of the past. Traditional music was not the music of "A" bygone era, it was the music of ALL ACCESSIBLE bygone eras, a link to the history of the Church "and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won." What is the notion? "But now we have such a blossoming of talent that so many brilliant songs are being made in a single generation that the hymns are eclipsed?" Meanwhile, on planet Earth we endure mostly cringe-worthy amateurish and bland tunes, crude in every measure of melody, chord progression, etc., and lyrics with little content and awkward imagery, where once we sang sound and mature theology in masterful poetry to the compositions of masters of the art. Anything whatsoever as long as it was written recently, as in THIS YEAR or less. It is as if in a Church potluck dinner, all the masterpieces of the fine Church ladies were replaced with hard tack. Probably, there are as many good songs in the current crop as there were in any previous year, but the good ones are discarded with the bad, they are not allowed to accumulate. I know public education has declined in the US and public music education with it, but ultimately that does not fully excuse what we have done to ourselves. Supposedly, the new music program would be more popular. But, has this actually been focus grouped. or is everybody just assuming? This HAS TO be having a bad effect on Church attendance and evangelism. And, we find that Church attendance is declining. Albert Einstein described insanity as continuing to do the same thing and continuing to expect a different result. Rather than lecturing the "fogeys and stuck-in-the-muds" about how to reach modern folk, it may be time that we go, hat in hand, to the veterans of the salad days when folks liked going to Church, and humbly ask them WHAT WE HAVE LET SLIP! That said, the Getty's rock.
