In-conversation with Pádraig Murphy, Chair of the IIEA’s Foreign Policy Group, and former Irish Ambassador to Russia, Dr Hill explores her latest book, There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the 21st Century, in which she examines declining opportunity in the United States and the United Kingdom. Provocatively arguing that modern Russia represents “the Ghost of Christmas Future” for the United States, Dr Hill asserts Russia could become a harbinger of things to come for the US unless it heals the wounds of increasing political polarisation. She reflects on these themes and offers her insights on wider foreign policy challenges for the transatlantic partnership.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Fiona Hill is a senior fellow at the Center on the US and Europe at the Brookings Institution and author of There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the 21st Century. She previously served as senior director for European and Russian affairs on the National Security Council from 2017-2019 and as national intelligence officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council from 2006-2009. She holds a master's degree in Soviet studies and a doctorate in history from Harvard University and a master's in Russian and modern history from St. Andrews University in Scotland.

Good interview and always interesting listening to Fiona Hill . Ireland has a highly respected UN peace keeping reputation , they might have a few words with Russia and Ukraine . The Irish fishermen got arrangement with the Russian ambassador in Dublin with regard to it's fishing grounds and the Russian Defence Ministry agreed . Send in the IRISH . They will bring some good Irish Whiskey .

This is a very interesting conversation to hear now that it's around a year and a half since Russia has invaded Ukraine. But it turns out that his military personnel are badly trained and led, Russian logistics range from pathetic to nonexistent and Russian weapons and machinery are outdated, poorly maintained and wholly inadequate.inadequate for Putin's mission of restoring the old U.S.S.R. to its former glory. Which is something no one appreciates or desires to see happen. Meanwhile, as destructive and devastating for Ukraine as Putin's invasion is, Putin's war is not going well for him. Dr. Hill's observations are prophetic, and her experience, observations and insights and are both accurate and wise. I too read Dr. Hill's book, "There Is Nothing For You Here". The book is profound and thought provoking. I liked it very much. I like the well-crafted questions Ambassador Murphy asks; they're thoughtful, to the point and designed to call on the guest's knowledge and expertise, as well as keeping the conversation going. He also has a gentle, penetrating and succinct style of interviewing, and is respectful of his guests. That respect is very important.

This morning the BBC had on a French analyst say what we're looking at is the "Finlandization" policy with re: to Ukraine... & how to broach that.

Peter Lavelle makes some good points about this crisis being about NATO extension on the Russian border. A reverse Cuban missile crisis? Wasn't there an agreement that dates back to George W. Bush era?

Why isn't the west's involvement in the Maidan regime change opp never talked about? That has to be a major factor in this dispute.

Those nukes in Ukraine were Russian nukes placed in Ukraine. Ukraine never had nukes.

Remember Obama's hot mic discussing more flexibility with Russia over US/Europe missile defense systems after Obama's last election is over and done with? Yeah, so do I. If you don't remember that. Feel free to look it up and educate yourself.
