In defense of quitting

I was originally inspired to make this video when I learned about the term “quiet quitting” which is sort of a new buzzword for doing only what’s expected of you at your job and not going above and beyond. For the record, I think quiet quitting, especially at a corporate job, is fine! I don’t think people owe their employers anything beyond what they’re expected to contribute to maintain employment. But I have always had a deep resolve that I want to be really committed and driven in whatever I am doing with the majority of my time, whether it’s working as a line cook in a restaurant, or living with my parents as an adult so I can be an artist full time. I know this comes from my family legacy of my mom and grandfather particularly, not having the means, both materially and psychologically, to really act on their deepest passions and feel secure doing so, but still making huge strides in providing a better life for their families than the generation before them. I wanted to show how far along I am in that generational pipeline, and how that internal security I have to make big changes in my life manifests itself in not only my career but also my relationships and other decisions about how I spend my time. Life is short and precious. I want to do everything in my power to make the most of it.

Wow, came over here on your recommendation from ‘Family Dinner’ On the surface, I will absorb this differently than 99.9% of your audience because I know your mom and Grandparents. I teared up quite often because while I knew some things, I did not know the depth of it. Anyway, your ARE a filmmaker. I was trying to remember when your grandfather sent me the link to your channel, I am sure it was when your first created it-I know it was quite a few years ago-he had total confidence back then that you would become a film maker-and that seems to be what you keep coming back to-as you said, do it while you are young and healthy and hopefully you will break in or find your niche that will allow you to be creative and happy. I love your use of music and on a very personal level I really enjoyed seeing the photos of your grandparents and your mom and even Smokey the cat when they were all younger. Oh and your Grandfather is an amazing woodworker/craftsman-he made beautiful things and I remember your grandmother as a great cook and an amazing quilter-I remember your mom also as a good cook and very good at crafts-I would say that ‘cooking’ (and baking) can also very creative- just not what you are into but others are :) And certainly woodworking is-though perhaps not by professions-your mom and Grandparents are all very creative-you have good genes!!! I believe each generation goes through what you are-you will find your way 🙂 (Edit-it looks like this channel is not as old as I thought-perhaps your grandfather sent me some of your (older) videos or something-I know it has been a while since he had been talking about you being a filmmaker)

Thank you so much for watching this video! I worked very hard on it and loved having my mom and grandpa in it. I agree with you that I come from a very creative family where everyone has different talents. My grandma has taught me a lot about crafts and cooking and my mom has taught me a lot about art. We have done a lot of creative things together over the years, and I think I apply that creativity and discipline that I learned from all three of them to my filmmaking now. Thanks again for watching, I'm so glad you enjoyed!

I rarely comment on videos, but this time I had to. Everything you described in this video, the creative burnout from all you love to the uncertain yet determined step to quit a job, are all things I'm currently facing. It's exactly what I needed to hear right now. I've worked in restaurants since I was young, born and raised in the business. I've always enjoyed working in kitchens and on the floor, but recently that's changed for the worst. I'm a creative person at my core; A writer, an artist, a seamstress, these are all things I pride myself in doing more than anything. I've been working on my very first novel for the past year and a half wondering every day if this path is one I should walk down since I've already invested so much love and care into the work I've done in the restaurant industry. Nothing makes me happier than when I can write and hearing you describe your own hardships, despite being different from my own, has made me realize that perhaps it's time to stop questioning if it's time to quit my current (and certainly dead-end) kitchen job. I rarely stumble across people I think can accurately articulate how I am feeling far better than I can, so I'm genuinely grateful to have seen this. It's the gentle guidance I needed most right now. With how beautifully both this video and the one you made when you rearranged your room are, I'm sure that you'll have the film career that you wish to carve for yourself. As a side note: Thank you for acknowledging how difficult and grueling kitchen work can often be. You've had your fair share of hours I'm sure, so from one cook to one former: Thank you for all that you did to keep people fed and happy, for it can be a thankless job.

Thank you very much for writing this comment. I do not know anyone in my life who has been through the same thing I have in terms of cooking in a kitchen but having the same kind of creative desires outside of restaurant life. I think it's amazing that you have been writing a novel while working in a restaurant. Even though I was cultivating my creative ideas while I was cooking, I certainly did not have the energy or willpower to actually work on them outside of work. Even though the last few months of my job and the first few months of "unemployment" were really hard for me to adjust to, I feel like working in the restaurant gave me a profound appreciation for the time I have now to devote myself to my creative work. Those hard times are my biggest motivator now. I hope you can carve out that time for yourself and feel that same type of motivation. It sounds like you will! I'm rooting for you to keep working on your creative endeavors no matter how your restaurant career shakes out, and I sincerely hope to read your novel someday!❤
