I like you attitude and dedication to finding and catching larger kokes. A small group of us tried W. Lake back in 2012 and did lousy. We are experienced at the game but had very marginal luck, but a lot of fun trying.

I caught a couple at Strawberry Reservoir late last summer that were 20+". I didn't get tons of numbers but man they were huge! They seemed to only be dumb for the first hour and a half of light. Only downside was that I had to wade through tons of cutthroat trout.

Just got into Kokanee fishing, living 30minutes from Lake Merwin in Battle Ground. My parents live an hour from Wallowa lake and I spent 30yrs going there, knowing nothing about the Kokanee population until recently. Super exited to give it a shot in a couple months.

This was a huge S E C R E T.... For many years, and more than 20-years ago it was EASY to catch stringers of 15" to 20" Koke's ... B U T.... The word got out, and in recent years it seems near impossible to catch any better than 10" to 12" and the numbers are also down. About 25-yrs ago my youngest daughter and I caught (15) HUGE Trout in a 20 minute span, at the Eagle Cap sign. We couldn't hardly get our lines in the water, and we had FISH-ON... Many times doubles within 10' of the boat. A side note, we didn't eat fish back then and ALL fish were R E L E A S E D.... I'm guessing that in the ( 8 - 10 ) years that we went there,we caught over ONE THOUSAND total fish between Koke's / Rainbow's many 50 rainbow days. and a couple days of over ( 100 ) They still stock with TROPHY Rainbows many to (10) POUNDS... Now I never caught one of those monsters, but my share of (5) pounder's. I caught many Kokanee that were pounders, and my largest koke was around (3) pounds. I lost several that I would swear were MONSTERS... However I was DEEP and could have also been Mac's, not sure. Great Video.

Divers recovered all those barrels they could find and fortunately they were all empty. They had probably been used for floats under docks... not a good choice of floatation especially in a pristine lake like Wallowa.

Let’s talk salmon from known information about the species. A salmon returns to its home stream to spawn every 3 or 4 years depending on the species. When a stream becomes damed and fish are land locked your only going to have whatever is upstream at the time to become your present Kokanee in that lake. You could have one or two years of large fish and then those fish head upstream to spawn and die. Following year will be smolt to 5”, year two you will start to see fish just under legal size and year three you back into worthy fish. A land lock event happens all at once and there will only be one lifecycle of fish in that lake. You could have coho and chinook in there at once so you could have two nice years Kokanee fishing in a lake before the cycle starts over. So take note, this year is big fish in lake X…. Three years later there will be good fish in lake X again. And no, releasing a bunch of other fish to even the years out will cause increased preditation leading to lower overall numbers.
